  • Propellant tank pressurizing gas injector is used in the pressurization system of liquid propellant rocket to reduce incoming gas velocity and distribute the gas in the tank. Temperature distribution in the propellant tank ullage is varied according to the gas injector shape, and it has influence on the required pressurant gas and thermal phenomena in the tank. In this paper, diffuser type gas injector was studied to make the ullage have stratified temperature distribution. Injected gas flow at the outlet of prototype diffuser was visulized using particle image velocimetry method and it was compared with the results of calculation. Calculation was well agreed with measurement and was used as an inlet condition of propellant tank ullage calculation.

  • If the hydrogen industry is activated, the introduction of C-type and pressurized liquefied hydrogen (LH2) tank suitable for small and medium-sized transp- ortation and storage will be given priority in the future. Therefore in this paper, the behavior for the LH2 property changes and boil-off gas (BOG) treatment of the C-type cargo tank through voyage of the LH2 carrier and pressurized tank of the LH2 receiving terminal were analyzed through computational simulations by making assumptions about the carrier operation and unloading conditions.

  • This paper presents the strength safety of a hydrogen gas composite fuel tank, which is analyzed using a FEM based on the criterion of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. A hydrogen gas composite tank in which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of 6061-T6 material and carbon fiber wound composite layers of T800-24K is charged with a filling pressure of 70MPa and a gas storage capacity of 130 liter. The FEM results indicated that von Mises stress, 255.2MPa of an aluminum liner inner tank is low compared with that of 95% yield strength, 272MPa. And a carbon fiber stress ratio of a composite fuel tank is 3.11 in hoop direction and 3.04 in helical direction. These data indicate that a carbon fiber gas tank is safe in comparison to that of a recommended criterion of 2.4 stress ratio. Thus, the proposed composite tank with 130 liter capacity and 70MPa filling pressure is usable in strength safety.

  • The utilization of LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is increasing as an environmental-friendly fuel in all countries making green growth new paradigm, and use of gas is spread fast as motor fuels to decrease air pollution. Loss of lives by explosion and fire is happening every year as gas use increases, and gas accident in large scale storage property is causing serious problems socially. To minimize this problem, underground containment type storage tank is being presented as an alternative recently. In this study, to minimize explosion occurrence in underground containment type storage tank, the suitable storage tank is designed to consider explosion prevention that makes exposure surface area minimize in confined contents volume and flame to construct storage tank by the most suitable condition in the underground containment room. As a result of the design of storage tank having the most suitable condition by this research, underground containment space was minimized on diameter 3m, length 4.83m in 20 tons storage tank and its safety was improved as exposure surface area in flame decreased by 89.4%, compared with the existent storage tank.

  • Car acceleration or deceleration induce the surface slope of liquid fuel in the LNG tank. Slope changes the surface area wetted by liquid fuel in the tank and consequently heat leak to the tank. The Fortran program, 'Pro-Heatleak', is developed to evaluate heat leak on LNG tank. The verification test proves the high accuracy of the developed program. The difference between MathCad and computational results is less than 0.07 %. Computational analyses of heat leak are carried out for 10 gallons and 20 gallons of fuel vapor in the tank. With the increasing of fuel vapor volume by 10 percent the wetted surface area and heat leak respectively decrease by 13 percent. The difference between maximum and minimum heat leak is about 10 percent for both 10 gallons and 20 gallons of fuel vapor in the tank.

  • High pressure gas is a widely used storage mode for hydrogen fuel. A typical hydrogen tank that is charged with hydrogen gas can function as a hydrogen supply source in a large number of applications. The filling process of a high-pressure hydrogen tank should be reasonably short. However, when the fill time is short, the maximum temperature in the tank increases. Therefore the process should be designed in such a way to avoid high temperatures in the tank because of safety reasons. The paper simulates the fast filling process of hydrogen tanks using Computational Fluid Dynamics method. The local temperature distribution in the tank is obtained. Results obtained are compared with available experimental data. Further work is going on to improve the accuracy of the calculations.

  • This study was investigated the estimation of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) emission from a gas station tank. To improve the atmosphere environmental quality near the gas station, the installation of vapor recovery system has been expanded recently. Therefore, it was necessary to calculate VOCs emissions from the gas station tank with vapor recovery systems for evaluation of their performance. The VOCs emissions are difficult to measure directly because of various sources and irregularly emission by pressure rise. In this study, VOCs emissions were estimated by simple calculation based on the equation of state for measured pressure, temperature and volume of a gasoline tank at a gas station. The result confirmed that the present national emission factor did not have significant discrepancy with the calculated value.

  • LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) vehicles in metropolitan area are being applied to improve air quality and have been proven effective for the reduction of air pollutant. In addition, the demand of gas as an eco-friendly energy source has being increased. With the LPG filling station is also increasing every year. These gas stations are required to install the securest storage tank because of possibility of causing huge loss of life and property. Therefore, in this paper, underground containment type is proposed as installation of the LPG storage tank using Taguchi method, which is considered to be more safe, economical, efficient, easy checking and simple construction method than any other. If leakage, economics, real estate utilization rate, safety, easy to check, simple construct about above ground, buried underground and underground containment storage tank are analyzed by Taguchi method, real estate utilization rate, economic and safety in turn are improved. Therefore, the underground containment storage tank is a optimal installation technology.

  • Traditionally all concrete roof type LNG storage tank have been constructing in Korea regardless of LNG tank types. But a steel roof LNG storage tank has merits relatively in designing larger scale tanks and construction cost so it is on the table to apply. This study was carried for the standardized development of impact and fire hazard analysis on a 200,000$k{\ell}$ steel roof LNG storage tank designed by KOGAS and for getting quantitative safety data on a steel roof LNG storage tank compared with a conventional concrete roof LNG storage tank by evaluating with this method. Hazard analysis on each four impact and fire scenarios were developed and evaluated by using finite element methods.

  • This paper presents the numerical study on the strength safety of the prestressed concrete outer tank for a LNG storage tank, which is manufactured by sets of membrane panels with special corrugations. This study for a finite element analysis assumes that the membrane panel of the inner tank was fractured and the liquefied natural gas stored in the inner membrane tank was leaked to the prestressed concrete outer tank. The stress and displacement of the outer tank have been analyzed for five different loadings, which are originated by a hydrostatic pressure and a weight of a LNG, a temperature difference, a weight of the prestressed concrete and a boil-off gas pressure. The computed FEM results indicate that the PC outer tank with a storage capacity of 200,000$m^3$ has a good strength safety for a leaked LNG from the membrane inner tank, but the increased cryogenic loadings in which are originated by a leaked LNG decreases the strength safety of the PC structure. This may lead to the collapse of the outer storage tank.
