FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding), SAW(Submerged Arc Welding), EGW(Electro Gas Welding), and three-pole SAW are applicable in manufacturing the offshore wind tower. In this paper, mechanical properties of these welded-joints for TMCP steels were evaluated in all above welding processes. The tensile strength of welded-joints for all the welding methods satisfied the standard guideline (KS D 3515). No cracking on weldment was found after the bending test. Changes of weldedments hardness with welding processes were observed. In a weld HAZ (heat-affected zone), a softened HAZ-zone was formed with high heat input welding processes (SAW and EGW). However, the welded-joint fractures were found in the base metal for all cases and small decrease in welded-joint strength was caused by a softened zone. The multi-pole SAW welds exhibited similar mechanical properties comparing to the one with one-pole SAW process.
Ti based nanocomposite films including V, Si and Nb (Ti-Me-N, Me=V, Si and Nb) were fabricated by hybrid physical vapor deposition (PVD) method consisting of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering and arc ion plating (AIP). The pure Ti target was used for arc ion plating and other metal targets (V, Si and Nb) were used for sputtering process at a gas mixture of Ar/$N_2$ atmosphere. Mostly all of the films were grown with textured TiN (111) plane except the Si doped Ti-Si-N film which has strong (200) peak. The microhardness of each film was measured using the nanoindentation method. The minimum value of removal rate ($0.5{\times}10^{-15}\;m^2/N$) was found at Nb doped Ti-Nb-N film which was composed of Ti-N and Nb-N nanoparticles with small amount of amorphous phases.
The purpose of the study is to produce a mechanically improved weld and minimum variation of color through comparing unpulsed and pulsed GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) for pure titanium (CP grade7) tube. Pulsed GTAW using 60 A peak current and 20 A background current (1:9) achieved the wider window of welding conditions having part and full penetration without burn-through than the case of unpulsed GTAW. Moreover, the pulsed welding reduced a discoloration on the back bead of the weld and the size of microstructures (basket weave and serrated ${\alpha}$). That is because the pulsed welding has it's a low heat input and severe weld flow induced from electric current variation. Furthermore, the pulsed welding improved the bending property of the welded Ti tube. The enhanced bending property for the pulsed GTAW was due to the insignificant discoloration on the weld surface with maintaining the metal polish.
Welding deformation during the assembly process is affected by not only local shrinkage due to rapid heating and cooling, but also root gap and misalignment between parts to be welded. Therefore, the prediction and control of welding deformation have become of critical importance. In this study, it was focused on the development of the 3-axis apparatus for real-time measurement of the welded deformation. To achieve the objective, a D-H algorithm has been carried out to check the behavioral and performance evaluation for the developed robot. The sequence experiments were taken the base materials of $400{\times}200{\times}4.5mm$ plate for butt welding. The real-time experimental measurements are in good agreement with the measured results.
Laser beam welding is increasingly being used in welding of structural steels. The laser welding process is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies owing to its high speed and deep penetration. The thermal cycles associated with laser welding are generally much faster than those involved in conventional arc welding processes, leading to a rather small weld zone. Experiments are performed for 304 stainless steel plates changing several process parameters such as laser power, welding speed, shielding gas flow rate, presence of surface pollution, with fixed or variable gap and misalignment between the similar and dissimilar plates, etc. The following conclusions can be drawn that laser power and welding speed have a pronounced effect on size and shape of the fusion zone. Increase in welding speed resulted in an increase in weld depth/ aspect ratio and hence a decrease in the fusion zone size. The penetration depth increased with the increase in laser power.
A pulse driven atmospheric plasma jet controlled by external ballast capacitor is developed. Unlike the most commonly use DBD sources, the proposed device utilizes bare metal electrode. The discharge energy per pulse can precisely be determined by changing voltage and capacitance of the ballast capacitor. It is shown that the device can provide wide range of plasma, from stable glow mode to near arc state. Current-voltage waveforms, optical emission spectra and discharge images are investigated as a function of an injection energy. The OES shows that He and oxygen lines are increased as a function of the external ballast capacitor. Ozone and rotational temperature have similar tendency with a power consumption. The feeding gas is He and the applied DC voltage is from 400V to 800V when the gap distance is $500{\mu}m$.
An attractive combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in the temperature range -50 to $250^{\circ}C$ is offered by duplex stainless steel. However, undesirable secondary precipitation phase such as $\sigma$, $\gamma_2$ and $Cr_2N$ may taken place at the cooling stage from the welding processes. Therefore, this paper describes the influence of different welding procedures such as manual metal arc welding (MMA), tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) and vacuum brazing on corrosion resistance of the welded joint for UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel. Microstructure and chemical compositions of the welded joint were examined. The weight loss of specimens immersed in 6% $FeCl_3$ solution at $47.5^{\circ}C$ for 24-hours was determined and used to evaluate the pitting resistance of duplex stainless steel and their welds. The region of heat-affected zone of specimen obtained by the MMA is much wider than that resulted from TIG, therefore, the weight loss of welds by MMA was larger than that of weld by TIG. The weight loss of brazed specimens cooled from slow cooling rate was larger than those of specimens cooled from high cooling rate, because the precipitation of $\sigma$ phase. Beside that, the weight loss of brazed specimen is greater than those of the welded specimens. The galvanic corrosion was observed in brazed duplex stainless steel joints in the chloride solution.
Generally welding is one of the most important processes to have a strong influence on the quality and productivity from a manufacture-based industry such as shipbuilding, automotive and machinery. The GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding process involves large number of interdependent welding parameters which may affect product quality, productivity and cost effectiveness. To solve such problems, mathematical models are required to select the welding parameters for GMA welding process. In this study, the GMA welding process was studied using the information generated during the welding. The statistical analysis of a generalized regression approach was conducted by the following three methods: Firstly using the mathematical model (linear regression, 2nd regression); Secondly GA(Genetic Algorithm) with intelligent models; And finally using response surface analysis of models to develop the relationships between welding parameters and bead width as welding quality.
Rare earth (RE) - transition metal based high energy density magnets are of immense significance in various engineering applications. $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ magnets possess the highest energy product and are widely used in whole industries. Simultaneously, composite alloys that are cheap, cost effective and strong commercially available have drawn great attention, because rare-earth metals are costly, less abundant and strategic shortage. We designed rare-earth free alloys and fabrication process and developed novel route to prepare $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ powders by wet process employing spray drying and reduction-diffusion (R-D) without the use of high purity metals as raw material. MnAl-base permanent magnetic powders are potentially important material for rare-earth free magnets. We have prepared the nano-sized MnAl powders by plasma arc discharge and micron-sized MnAl powders by gas atomization. They showed good magnetic property, compared with that from conventional processes. $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ powders with high coercivity of more than 10 kOe were successfully synthesized by adjusting R-D step, followed by precise washing system. It is considered that this process can be applied for the recycling of RE-elements extracted from ewaste including motors.
Generally, the use of robots in manufacturing industry has been increased during the past decade. GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding process is an actively Vowing area, and many new procedures have been developed for use with high strength alloys. One of the basic requirement for the automatic welding applications is to investigate relationships between process parameters and bead geometry. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach involving the use of neural network and multiple regression methods in the prediction of bead geometry for GMA welding process and to develop an intelligent system that visualize bead geometry in order to employ the robotic GMA welding processes. Examples of the simulation for GMA welding process are supplied to demonstrate and verify the proposed system developed using MATLAB. The developed system could be effectively implemented not oかy for estimating bead geometry, but also employed to monitor and control the bead geometry in real time.
