Syngas, also known as synthesis gas, synthetic gas, or producer gas, is a combustible gas mixture generated when organic material (biomass) is heated in a gasifier with a limited airflow at a high temperature and elevated pressure. The present research was aimed at modifying the existing LPG engine generator for fully operated syngas. During this study, the designed gasifier-powered woodchip biomass was used for syngas production to generate power. A 6.0 kW LPG engine generator was modified and tested for operation on syngas. In the experiments, syngas and LPG fuels were tested as test fuels. For syngas production, 3 kg of dry woodchips were fed and burnt into the designed downdraft gasifier. The gasifier was connected to a blower coupled with a slider to help the air supply and control the ignition. The convection cooling system was connected to the syngas flow pipe for cooling the hot produce gas and filtering the impurities. For engine modification, a customized T-shaped flexible air/fuel mixture control device was designed for adjusting the correct stoichiometric air-fuel ratio ranging between 1:1.1 and 1.3 to match the combustion needs of the engine. The composition of produced syngas was analyzed using a gas analyzer and its composition was; 13~15 %, 10.2~13 %, 4.1~4.5 %, and 11.9~14.6 % for CO, H2, CH4, and CO2 respectively with a heating value range of 4.12~5.01 MJ/Nm3. The maximum peak power output generated from syngas and LPG was recorded using a clamp-on power meter and found to be 3,689 watts and 5,001 watts, respectively. The results found from the experiment show that the LPG engine generator operated on syngas can be adopted with a de-ration rate of 73.78 % compared to its regular operating fuel.
A novel multi-staged waste pyrolysis & gasification system of pilot scale (~1 ton/day) is designed and constructed in Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. The pyrolysis & gasification system is composed of pyrolysis & gasification system, syngas reformer, syngas cleaning system, gas engine power generation system and co-combustion system. For each unit process, experimental approaches have been conducted to find optimal design and operating conditions. As a result, We can produce syngas with a calorific value of ~4000 kcal/$Nm^3$ and cold gas efficiency of the system is more than 55 % in case of waste plastic and oxygen as a gasifying agent.
Hydrogen is usually produced by using syngas generated by the fuel reforming for natural gas so far. The further process is needed for increasing the hydrogen yield of syngas. However, the process for upgrading the hydrogen yield is accompanied by additional energy sources and economic costs. Thus related studies on the method for using as a mixture in itself have been conducted in order to utilize more efficiently syngas. The effect on the engine performance for methane/syngas mixture of 30kW spark ignition gas engine for power generation has been investigated in this study. As a result, it was found that the combustion phenomena such as the maximum in-cylinder pressure and crank angle at that time have been improved by methane/syngas mixture. Through these, fuel conversion efficiency could be enhanced by about 98% of methane/hydrogen mixture and $NO_x$ emissions could be reduced by about 12% of methane-hydrogen mixture.

In a gas engine, the exhaust and the engine cooling water are generated. The engine cooling water temperature is $100^{\circ}C$ and the exhaust temperature is $500^{\circ}C$. The amount of heat of engine cooling water is 43 kW and the amount of heat of exhaust is 21 kW. Eight different hybrid organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system configurations which considering different amount and temperature of waste heat are proposed for two gas engine tri-generation system and are thermodynamically analyzed. Simple system which concentrating two different waste heat on relatively low temperature engine cooling water shows highest thermal efficiency of 7.84% with pressure ratio of 3.67 and shaft power of 5.17 kW.

Natural gas is a high-octane fuel that is effective in controlling knocking combustion. In addition, as a low-carbon fuel with a high hydrogen-carbon ratio, it emits less carbon dioxide and almost no particulate matter compared to conventional fossil fuels. Stoichiometric combustion engines equipped with a three-way catalyst are useful in various fields such as transportation and power generation because of their excellent exhaust emission reduction performance. However, stoichiometric combustion engines have a disadvantage of lower thermal efficiency compared to lean combustion engines. In this study, a combination of high compression ratio and Atkinson cycle was implemented in a 11 liter, 6-cylinder, spark-ignition engine to improve the thermal efficiency of the stoichiometric engine. As a result, pumping and friction losses were reduced and the operating range was extended with optimized Atkinson camshaft. Based on the exhaust gas limit temperature of 730℃, the maximum load and thermal efficiency were improved to BMEP 0.66 MPa and BTE 35.7% respectively.
Wastes such as shredder dust of disposed vehicles can be decomposed into low calorific flammable gases by Pyrolysis gasification. A stationary electric Power generation using an internal combustion engine fuelled with the waste-pyrolysis gas is an effective way to ease both waste management and energy saving issues. The waste-pyrolysis gas mainly consists of H$_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $N_2$. The composition and heating value of the gas generated depend on the conversion process and the property of the initial waste. This research analyzed the characteristics of the combustion and the exhaust emissions in a premixed charge spark ignition engine fuelled with several kinds of model gases, which were selected to simulate the pyrolysis-gases of automobile shredder dusts. The influences of the heating value and composition of the fuel were analyzed parametrically. Furthermore, optical analyses of the combustion flame were made to study the influence of the fuel's inert gas on the flame propagation.

This paper describes a methodology and results for the analysis of a small steam injected gas turbine cogeneration system. A performance analysis program for the gas turbine engine is utilized with modifications required for the model of steam injection and the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The object of simulation is a simple cycle gas turbine engine under development which adopts a centrifugal compressor. The analysis is based on the off-design operation of the gas turbine and the compressor performance map is utilized. Analyses are carried out with the injection ratio as the main parameter. The effect of steam injection on the power and efficiency of gas turbine and cogeneration capacity is investigated. Also presented is the variation in the main operating parameters inside the HRSG. Remarkable reduction in NOx generation by steam injection is confirmed. In addition, it is observed that for the 100% power operation the temperature of the cooled first nozzle blade decreases by 100.deg. C at full steam injection, which seems to have a favorable effect on the engine life time.
Natural gas fuel has known to be very promising in terms of abundancy and economic value. Therefore it is widely treated as research topics in a variety field of production, storage and utilization. Natural gas has become one of the major sources for the power generation by using internal combustion engines(ICE). Development of natural gas fuel injection device should be preceded to realize a reliable natural gas fuel supply system for a MW class power generation reciprocating ICE. In this research, an injection valve which consists of solenoid and body part with a moving plate was designed and its dynamic performance was experimented in the engine-like environment. Displacement length and diameter of an armature and diameter of a solenoid coil were tested at former study. In this research the effect of materials of solenoid core, size of main housing inlet and supply gas pressure are examined.

Operating characteristics of DGT-5 being developed by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. for power generation service was evaluated. Starting behavior was improved by a series of tests to investigate the effect of various fuel schedule and several combination of bleed valve control. The engine showed stable operation without any instability of compressor in the full operating regime covering from start-up to load conditions. If there is a rapid change of load in the condition of synchronization to Grid, the engine can be controlled stably based on the analysis of dynamic responses of the engine to an rapid load change and a sudden load rejection.
