This study is to investigate the spray behavior of DME-LPG blended fuels in common rail injection system for diesel engines. The visualization experiment was performed to analyze the macroscopic spray behavior of test fuels. In addition, the experiment using BOS(Background Oriented Schlieren) method is performed to compare liquid phase and gas phase. The test fuels are injected in high pressure chamber. The ambient pressure of high pressure chamber was formed by nitrogen gas. Spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and spray area were measured using high speed camera. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) and spray particle velocity were measured using the PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system to analyze the microscopic properties of test fuels. The results of this experiment showed that spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and spray area of DME-LPG fuels are similar to those of DME fuel. When compared to results of experiment using BOS, significant differences of spray tip penetrations, spray cone angle and spray area are showed because of gas phase. The results of experiment using BOS method showed higher values. SMD of DME-LPG blended fuels is smaller than that of DME fuel. Velocity of DME-LPG blended fuels is faster than that of DME fuel.

Numerical simulations on the close-coupled supersonic gas atomizer for metallic powder production were performed in this study. A proper turbulence model was chosen and then VOF(Volume of Fluid) and DPM(Discrete Phase Model) methods were sequentially applied for the simulations of primary and secondary break-up processes of liquid metal. Diameters of parent droplets were calculated by analyzing Level-Set function contour from the VOF result. Finally, the distribution of particle diameter was obtained from the DPM result at exit of the computational domain.
A numerical analysis on the microstructural evolutions of microcellular and cellular ${\alpha}-aluminum$ phase in the gas-atomized Al-8wt. pct droplets was represented. The 2-dimensional non-Newtonian heat transfer and the dendritic growth theory in the undercooled melt were combined under the assumptions of a point nucleation on droplet surface and the macroscopically smooth solid-liquid interface enveloping the cell tips. It reproduced the main characteristic features of the reported microstructures quite well. It predicted a considerable volume fraction of segregation-free region in a droplet smaller than $l0{\mu}m$ if an initial undercooling larger than 100K is given. The volume fractions of the microcellular region($g_A$) and the sum of the microcellular and cellular region($g_a$) were predicted as functions of the heat transfer coefficient, h and initial undercooling, ${\triangle}T$. It was shown that $g_A$ and $g_a$, in the typical gas-atomization processes with $h=0.1-1.0W/cm^2K$, are dominated by ${\triangle}T$ and h, respectively, but for h larger than $4.0W/cm^2K$, a fully microcellular structure can be obtained irrespective of the initial undercooling.

A preburner is one of the key components for a staged combustion cycle engine fueled by kerosene and Lox. Since it has oxygen rich combustion inside, temperature control is very crucial. The temperature of the exhaust gas should be low enough not to burn turbine blade and yet high to keep the efficiency high. In addition temporal and spatial deviations also managed strictly. Conventionally, the required average and maximum temperature are determined by engine system and the preburner should be developed to meet the criteria. Currently being developed preburner has 50K spatial temperature deviation requirement. It was estimated by numerical simulations and proven by tests. The numerical analysis were done with both supercritical condition and normal conditions. The tests results showed that the temperature deviations were less than expected, and the results from the test and simulations were well agreed when the supercritical conditions were considered. Above all, since the gas temperature created by the preburner is very stable with minimum deviation, the preburner developed can be used to drive a turbine and for gas-liquid combustion chambers.

The shock tube is a useful device for investigating shock phenomena, spray combustion, unsteady gas dynamics, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze exactly the flow phenomena in shock tube. In this study, the mechanics of its reflected shock zone has been investigated by using of the one-dimensional gas dynamic theory in order to estimate the transition from initial reflection of shock wave region. Calulation for four kinds of reflected shock tube temperature (i.e. (a) 1388 K (b) 1276 K (c) 1168 K (d) 1073 K) corresponding to the experimental conditions have been carried out sumarized as follows. (1) The qualitative tendency is almost the same as in that conditions in region of reflected wave region. (2) High temperature period (reflected shock wave temperature) $T_{5}$, exists 0-2.65 ms. (3) Transition period from temperature of reflection shock wave is far longer than the calculated one. This principally attributed to the fact that the contact surface is accelerated, also, due to the release of energy by viscoity effect. This apparatus can advance the ignition process of a spray in a ideal condition that involved neither atomization nor turbulent mixing process, where, using a shock tube, a column of droplets freely from atomizer was ignited behind a reflected shock.
It is important to study on the combustion instability to develop liquid rocket engines for preventing lower combustion efficiency and destruction of combustion chamber. There are many researches on simplex injector with liquid pulsation to solve this problem. In real rocket engine system, however, they use coaxial injectors. Therefore, research on coaxial injector with liquid pulsation is essential. In this study, we investigate dynamic characteristics of gas centered swirl coaxial injector varying tangential inlet diameter. A mechanical pulsator was used to generate an excitation in the liquid flow, and the response characteristics of the injector were confirmed. As tangential inlet diameter increased, mass flow rates increased and spray angle decreased. As tangential inlet diamter decreased, gain decreased because the pressure fluctuation in the injector manifold rarely passed through the inlet. Additionally, it was confirmed that a sufficiently small tangential inlet served as a damper.

To improve the mixing and atomizing performance at the center region of the conventional coaxial shear injector spray, the concept of a coaxial porous injector was invented. This novel injection concept for liquid rocket engines utilizes the Taylor-Culick flow in the cylindrical porous tube. The 2-dimensional injector, which can be converted in three injection configurations, was fabricated, and several cold flow tests using water-air simulant propellant was performed. The hydraulic characteristics and the effects of a gas flow condition on the spray pattern and the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) was analyzed for each configuration. The atomizing mechanism of coaxial porous injector was different with the coaxial shear injector, and it was explained by the momentum of the gas jet, which is injected normally against the center liquid column, and by the secondary disintegration at the wavy interface of liquid jet, which was generated at the recessed region. The SMD of 2D coaxial porous injector, which has higher gas momentum, was measured and it shows better atomizing performance at the center and outer side of spray than the 2D coaxial shear injector.
The present paper deals with the numerical simulation for the spray characteristics with swirling turbulent flows and dilution flows from swirl injectors in a simplified can type of gas turbine combustor. The main objective is to investigate the characteristics of swirling turbulent flows with dilution flows and to provide the qualitative results for the spray characteristics such as the droplet distribution and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD). The gas-phase equations based on Eulerian approach were discretized by Finite Volume Method, together with SIMPLE algorithm and the Reynolds -Stress-Model. The liquid-phase equations based on Lagrangian method were used to predict the droplet behavior. The results of preliminary test are generally in good agreement with experimental data, and show that the anisotropy exists in the primary zone due to swirl velocity and injected air from primary injector, and then gradually decays due to turbulent mixing and consequently near-isotropy occurs in the region between primary and dilution zones. For the spray characteristics, it is indicated that the swirling flows of primary jet region increase the droplet atomization. In addition, it is showed that the swirling flows at the inlet region lead the air-fuel mixture to be distributed near the igniter and can significantly affect the spray behavior in the primary jet region.
The purpose of this study is to develop a packing-free wet scrubber to prolong the maintenance interval compared with the conventional packed bed wet scrubbers with which frequent operation stops are unavoidable to clean the packing materials. The main- and interaction-effects were quantitatively analyzed by regression analysis for the measured ammonia scrubbing data from the experiments prepared by experimental design. The scrubbing efficiency of the newly developed wet scrubber was found to be over 95% under the condition of flue gas flow rate of 90CMM and liquid-to-gas ratio $2l/m^3$ for all considered trials of experimental design. The interaction effect between the inlet duct spray and the filter was found to be important, which controls the droplet growth due to the droplet collisions between the duct- and scrubbing tower-spray. The presented methodology to analyze the impacts of operational and design factors on the scrubber efficiency showed potential for applications to optimize the future flue gas abatement process in semiconductor plants.

Stoichiometric combustion in spark ignition (SI) engines has an advantage of meeting future stringent emission regulations. However, the drawback of the combustion is a lower thermal efficiency than that of lean burn. In this study, energy losses in a natural gas stoichiometric SI engine generator were analyzed to establish a strategy for improving the generating efficiency (GE). The energy losses were investigated based on dynamometer and load bank experiments. As the intake manifold pressure increased in the dynamometer experiment, the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased mainly due to the reduction in the pumping and mechanical losses. In the load bank experiment, the generating power and GE increased with the increased intake manifold pressure. The generating power and GE were lower than the brake power and BTE due to the cooling fan power and the losses in the generator.
