In continuous galvanizing process at steel making plant, coating weight on the surface of strip that pass through air knife is controlled by the pressure at the chamber of air knife and the gap between the nozzle of air knife and strip. The pressure can be easily measured and controlled. But it is difficult to measure the distance between Air knife nozzle and strip, and also difficult to decide how much distance air knife move. Because, the gap between nozzle and strip varies with the height of air knife, intermesh of stabilizing roll and welding of strips that have different thickness. In this research, we developed a gap sensor that can measure the relative distance between Air knife nozzle and strip. And several tests are performed to find optimal condition for application at real plant. We performed test in which the possibility of the sensor to apply ...

The effects of operating temperature and electrode gap distance on electricity generation were investigated in two-chamber type MFCs. Voltages across the external resistor $(100\;{\Omega})$ were enhanced approximately 1.4 times by the increase of operating temperature from $30^{\circ}C$ to $34^{\circ}C$. The open circuit voltages (OCVs) were increased by the increase of temperature and the maximum power of MFC was obtained at higher current condition by increasing temperature and reducing electrode gap distance. The maximum power densities were enhanced from 1.9 to 2.4 times according to the experimented electrode gap distances by increasing temperature of $4^{\circ}C$. The electricity generation was increased with the decrease of electrode gap distance. The effects of operating temperature and electrode gap distance were closely connected with the internal resistance of MFC system. That is, the increase of temperature and decrease of electrode gap distance reduced the internal resistance of MFC, resulting in the enhancement of electricity generation of MFC.

Objective: Osseointegration is essential process for successful implants and effects to implant in long term, therefore, passive fitness of good prosthesis is necessary. To make a good prosthesis, at first it should be done a sectioned casting and then joined method of sectioned casting body is recommended. Methods: In this study, to provide the fundamental data on stable connection method for successful implants, the author tested fitness of casting body, and compared difference between gas soldering technique and laser welding technique. Results: In fitness test of 2 abutment (test A, C), gas soldering group's fitness in the opposite part of connection was worse than laser welding group. In fitness test of 3 abutment (test B, D), gap distance was increased both in gas soldering technique and laser welding technique. Gap distance at the connecting part and the opposite part of the abutment in gas soldering technique was worse than laser welding technique and the more additional abutment, the worse gap distance in gas soldering technique. In fitness test of 3 abutment (test B, D), there's little variation in No. 2 abutment when connecting soldering process was done and there's little influence on already soldered connection part when the additional soldering connection was done. Conclusion: On weak loading condition and the part which is needed an accuracy, laser welding technique is more effective and on long-span prosthesis and frequent chewing loading part, laser welding technique is recommended first and applying additional gas soldering technique would be better for making much more successful prosthesis.

The applications of the pulse power technology are expanding and the necessity of a large current switch as a core component of pulsed power is increasing. A trigger gap switch composed of three electrodes was fabricated and the discharge characteristics were studied according to the change of the pressure, the shape of the main electrode, and the gap distance when the trigger pulse was applied. As a main result, the stable operation range was confirmed through the discharge inception voltage according to the gap distance and electric field analysis was performed in the same structure to confirm the electric field value of the discharge inception voltage.

Gap servo NF (Near Field) system is one of technologies to reduce beam spot size by increasing NA (Numerical Aperture) of lens. To achieve higher NA, SIL (Solid Immersion Lens) is used. In the case of using a blue LD (405 nm) as the light source the gap distance should be controlled under 100 nm with much tighter margin. Because of very small gap distance between SIL bottom and the surface of media, relative tilt tolerance is limited. In this paper, we presented 2-axis tilt mechanism for skew adjustment within small tilt margin.

We have developed a sub-micron gap fabrication technology using chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) without /the sub-micron lithography equipments (0.18∼0.25 7m). And it has been applied to a lateral field emission device (FED), in which narrow gap distance is very important for reducing turn-on voltage. As a result, the turn-on voltage (at which the current level is 1 nA) of the fabricated device with the gap distance of 256 nm is as low as 4.0 V, which is the lowest turn-on voltage among lateral FEDs ever reported.

A high density optical data storage device has been required for many years. In the field of the optical data storage, a near-field recording (NFR) technology is considered as a next generation one for achieving the high data density. Due to an evanescent wave effect occurred under 100nm distance which is the excessively small distance between the SIL and the disc, the most significant and difficult problem in this technology is to maintain a gap between a solid immersion lens (SIL) and a disc. Also, maintaining the gap under at least 50nm is required in the NFR gap servo system to use the evanescent wave effect efficiently. There are some institutes that have shown the novel gap servo control. In general, they use a mode switching servo method which consists of approach, hand-over and gap control mode. However there is a critical problem such as an overshoot at the tuning point from the approach mode to the hand-over mode, which may cause a collision between the SIL and the disc. In this paper, we show our NFR system and an improved gap servo system using an exponential function as the approach mode which can reduce the overshoot.

The drag reduction effect of a freely-rotatable splitter plate was experimentally investigated in the 2-D wake behind a circular cylinder. By arranging the splitter plate to be aparted with a certain gap from the cylinder, the splitter plate was able to be aligned itself automatically to the flow direction in the tested range of 6.2$\times$$10^3$$\times$$10^4$. As a result, it was proven that the self-adjustable splitter plate always reduced effectively the drag imposed on the body against any arbitrary flow directions. In a specific range of Reynolds numbers, the drag reduction effect was dependent not only on the length of the splitter plate but also on the gap distance between the plate and the trailing edge of the body. For a splitter plate with a specific length, there existed a unique optimum range of gap distance to obtain successfully the drag reduction effect, however, the optimum range of gap distance was dependent on Reynolds number.

This paper dealt with the optimal design of a follow current disconnector for DC arresters used in electric traction vehicles. The disconnector separates the ground lead from an arrester to prevent a line-to-ground fault of an aged arrester and should not affect the operation and function such as the reference and the clamping voltage of the connected arrester. The designed disconnector is composed of a resistor, a spark gap, and a cartridge. The results showed that the sparkover voltage increased with the gap distance whereas the reference voltage was almost the same as that without the disconnector. The sparkover voltage was 3.95 kV when the gap distance was 0.5 mm. Regardless of the gap distance, the reference and the clamping voltage of the assembled disconnector with an arrester were measured to be the same as those of the arrester alone.
A turbine stage consists of a stator and rotor. A stator provides the required inlet flow conditions so that a rotor can produce the necessary power. Passing wakes generated at the trailing edge of a stator make an interaction with a rotor. In the present study, this interaction flow mechanism is investigated using the numerical analysis. In case of the large gap distance between the stator and rotor, the stator and rotor flow analysis can be separated. First, only the stator flow field is solved. Second, the rotor flow field is solved including the passing wake information from the stator analysis. The passing wake experiences the shearing as it approaches to the rotor leading edge. And it is chopped when it strikes the rotor body. After that, the chopped wakes becomes the prolongation as it goes downstream. Also, the aerodynamic characteristics with the variation of the gap distance between a stator and rotor was investigated. Pressure jumps due to the passing wakes result in the pressure and lift loss and it gets stronger with the closer gap distance. This unsteady effect proves to be directly related to the fatigue and noise in turbomachinery and this study would be helpful to investigate such fields.
