  • This paper aims to verify the static strength of a KHST gangway structure including fixed ring and carrying ring according to tile load cases in the defined specification. The structure has been analyzed by the finite element method. Calculation carried out in tile fields of linearity and small deformation. The admissible limit is tile yield strength for the available materials. The analysis results show that Von-Mises stress at some locations of the structure is a little beyond the admissible limit. These results are successfully reflected on the adjusted design.

  • Gangway bellows in this study is the double wrinkled neoprene rubber component to accept various deviations between the carriage end parts of the articulated type high speed railway vehicle(HSRV). The fatigue failure of the bellows has a harmful effect on the riding comfort for the passengers with the increase of noise and ringing in the ears due to air-tightness failure during pass through a long tunnel. In this study, to assure the safety of gangway bellows of the HSRV, non-linear analysis of the gangway bellows considering triaxial angular displacement(rolling /yawing/pitching) between the carriage end parts are performed. The non-linear properties of the rubber are determined by uniaxial tension and equi-biaxial tension test. Moreover, from the results of non-linear analysis, the effects of the angular displacements and frictional coefficients are evaluated.

  • To increase the riding comfort and running stability of articulated type high speed railway vehicles(HSRV), it is important that the gangway connections for the passenger car satisfied fire safety, sound proof and durability under triaxial angular displacement (rolling/yawing/pitching) modes. On the other hand, a domestic test standard on the durability of the rubber components has not been determined. In this study, the fatigue life was predicted using the results of the nonlinear finite element analysis and the fatigue properties. Moreover, a fatigue rig test of the component was constructed to examine the durability.

  • This paper describes the development of a simple and quantitative subsidence hazard estimation method appropriate to Korean coal mines using gangway depth information only. In spite of simpleness of estimation method, this new method gives good results close to those obtained using influence function method when applying to a virtual rectangular excavation model and to a closed mine where actual subsidence occurred. Therefore, this method can be effectively applied to the identification of zones liable to subsidence over closed coal mine in Korea where the shape of extraction is very complex and usually unknown.

  • A case study of fire risk analysis was conducted for train coach which has no gangway doors between coaches. The analysis boundary was limited to the time of outgoing from the coaches for it was train fire risk analysis. ASET(available safe egress time) and RSET(required safe egress time) methodology was used for calculating the dead. 4 liters of gasoline and cable fire at the electric cabinet and the standard fire of EN 45545 were selected for the fire sources. The fire were considered to be occurred at 3 different locations in the car. The train had 3 cases of driving scenarios. The result of all event was summarized for remained tunnel and station egress step.

  • The gangway connection of the articulated high speed railway vehicles (HSRV) is a double wrinkled rubber component to seal the air of the corridor under a range of angular deviations between the carriage end parts. From the results of non-linear structural analysis, one of the severe loading conditions for the connection is mixed mode (rolling+yawing) angular displacements while passing through the small-radius curved siding track of the HSRV depot. In this study, to ensure the safety enhancement of the component, the optimal design for the cross section of that was performed using the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method. Nonlinear finite element analysis confirmed that the decreases in the maximum principal strain of the optimized design under rolling and mixed modes are 68% and 39%, respectively, compared to the initial design.

  • The cavities formed by the excavation of coal seam cause unstable within rock body, leading to large displacement around adjacent roadway. This displacement brings the closure of roadway and deformation of support. Therefore, it is necessary to understand and predict the deformation characteristics of roadway while coal seam is under excavation. In this study, the observed displacements are compared with the calculated ones through the analysis using Linear Boundary Element Mothod under the elastostatic conditions, in order to determine the virgin stress state and deformation modulus which affect the deformation characteristices.

  • Rock classification schemes such as RMR, Q-system were applied to investigate the stability of large-scale gangways mined in a limestone mine. 22 areas for engineering geological surveys were selected and rock classifications at each survey point had been carried out. Considering the fact that the observed gangways have not experienced some severe failure and have been stably maintained till now, it is found that Q-system is more reasonable than RMR in evaluating the stability of unsupported span. Also, extended Mathews stability graph method which is a kind of revised Q-system was used to assess the stability of gangways and the results represent that all gangways except for one area are under stable condition. Based on above the mentioned results, the empirical equations to design the maximum unsupported span and critical height of a large-scale gangway are suggested.
