As a consequence of tissue culture of rice, RAPD analysis was peformed to determine whether extended culture periods as undifferentiated calli affected the subsequent genetic constancy, and whether any resulting DNA rearrangements could be detected between sibling plants produced from the same callus. Somaclonal variation was induced at the initial stage of tissue culture and it increased with the length of culture maintenance. Of the 192 total bands, the number of polymorphic bands was 22 (11.5%), 33 (17.2%), and 49 (25.5%) in the callus of 1,3, and 6 months culture, respectively. A significantly higher level of genotypic polymorphisms between regenerants from two different somaclones was also detected, although all the regenerants were derived from a single genotype. In comparison of DNA polymorphisms between regenerants from non-irradiated and from irradiated calli, a scope of variation spectrum by gamma ray irradiation was larger than that by tissue culture. Consideration must be given to this genomic variation where attempts are to be made to use desirable somaclonal variants for plant breeding purpose and in genetic engineering program.

A calculation is presented of air-scattered gamma rays using the modified single-scattering approximation. The air-scattered tissue dose rates are calculated for a general purpose taking into account (a) the buildup and exponential attenuation, (b) the energy spectrum at the position of question and (c) the geometrical scattering volume in three dimensions. These calculations have been further modified to render them applicable to a typical field irradiation facility which is surrounded by a shield wall and in which the source is fitted with a beam collimating device. The results of the calculation include the energy spectra, angular distribution and tissue does rates at source-receiver separation distances of from 35m to 300m. The comparison shows that the present method developed may be generally adequate for the gamma-ray air-scattering problems in field irradiation facilities if energy and angular distribution at the shield are unimportant.
We propose an overall procedure for measuring and unfolding fast neutron spectra using a trans-stilbene scintillation detector. Detector characterization was described, including the information on energy calibration, detector resolution, and nonproportionality response. The digital charge comparison method was used for the investigation of neutron-gamma Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD). A pair of values of 600 ns pulse width and 24 ns delay time was found as the optimized conditions for PSD. A fitting technique was introduced to increase the trans-stilbene Proton Response Function (PRF) by 28% based on comparison of the simulated and experimental electron-equivalent distributions by the Cf-252 source. The detector response matrix was constructed by Monte-Carlo simulation and the spectrum unfolding was implemented using the iterative Bayesian method. The unfolding of simulated and measured spectra of Cf-252 and AmBe neutron sources indicates reliable, stable and no-bias results. The unfolding technique was also validated by the measured cosmic-ray induced neutron flux. Our approach is promising for fast neutron detection and spectroscopy.
Neutron sources from photonuclear reaction with 46-MeV electron linear accelerator at Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University used for resonance energy measurement of natural tantalum. BGO($Bi_4Ge_3O_{12}$) scintillation detectors used for measurement of the prompt gamma ray from the natural tantalum sample. The BGO spectrometer was composed geometrically as total energy absorption detector. The electric signal from the spectrometer was analyzed for TOF(Time-of-Flight) spectrum which is used identification of neutron capture resonance energy. In this study, the neutron energy region is from 1 to 200 eV, because of strong X-ray effect produced photonuclear reaction in Ta target, the measurement was performed to below 1 keV energy region. The resonance energy was compared with the evaluated values(ENDF/B-VI, Mughabghab). All of the resonances from 4.28 ~ 200 eV were seen in the present measurement except 144.3 eV resonance.
It is important to measure and protect from the radiation space dose and induced activity at the high energy medical linear accelerator facilities. These are to consider the additional risk to patients undergoing treatment, machine operators and staff members. Measurements of the space dose distribution and induced radioactivity at the 18 MeV medical linear accelerator facility in the Yonsei Cancer Center. 1. Exposure space dose for 300 rads monitor doses of 18 MeV electron are measured as 50 mR at 1 meter from patients. 2. Exposure space dose for 300 rads monitor doses of 10 MV X-ray are detected as 350 mR at 1 meter from phantom. 3. Induced radioactivity by photonuclear reaction was measured as 0.65 mR/hr from collimater after 30 Gy(3,000 rads) irradiated. 4. Analyzing the decay curves and energy spectrum of induced radioactivity, detected a few materials to be activated by photoneutron reaction, $^{65}Cu({\gamma}{\cdot}n)\;^{64}Cu,\;^{186}W({\gamma}{\cdot}n)\;^{185}W,\;^{181}Ta({\gamma}{\cdot}n)\;^{180}Ta,\;^{199}Au({\gamma}{\cdot}n)\;^{198}Au$.
Analytical electron spin resonance (ESR) parameters were investigated in irradiated seasonings after exposure to different radiation sources. Two commercial seasonings (SS-1 and SS-2) were irradiated with 0.20 kGy under ambient conditions using a $^{60}Co$ gamma-ray irradiator or an electron beam accelerator. Crystalline sugar-induced multi-component signals with g-values of 2.031, 2.021, 2.017, 2.009, 2.002, 1.990, and 1.980 were observed in both irradiated samples, whereas singlet signals were detected in non-irradiated materials, thereby distinguishing irradiated from control samples. Under the same analytical conditions, the ESR signal intensity of electron beam-irradiated samples was greater than that of gamma-irradiated materials. Determination coefficients (R2 values) between irradiation doses and corresponding ESR responses were 0.9916-0.9973 for all samples, and the magnetic field of specified g-values for irradiated samples remained constant. The predominant ESR signals of g2 (2.021), g4 (2.009), g5 (2.002), and g6 (1.990) showed high correlations with the corresponding irradiation doses (R2=0.8243 - 0.9929).
Sintered LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si thermoluminescence (TL) pellets were developed for application in radiation dosimetry. In the present study, the TL dosimetric properties of LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si TL pellets have been investigated for emission spectrum, dose response, energy response, and fading characteristics. LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si TL pellets were made by using a sintering process, that is, pressing and heat treatment from TL powders. Photon irradiations for the experiments were carried out using X-ray beams and a $^{137}Cs$ gamma source at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The average energies and the dose were in the range of 20-662 keV and $10^{-6}-10^{-2}\;Gy$, respectively. The glow curves were measured with a manual type TLD reader(System 310, Teledyne) at a constant nitrogen flux and a linear heating rate. For a constant heating rate of $5^{\circ}C\;s^{-1}$, the main dosimetric peak of glow curve appeared at $234^{\circ}C$, the activation energy was 2.34 eV and frequency factor was $1.00{\times}10^{23}$. TL emission spectrum is appeared at the blue region centered at 410 nm. A linearity of photon dose response was maintained up to 100 Gy. The photon energy responses relative to $^{137}Cs$ response were within ${\pm}20%$ at overall photon energy region. The fading of TL sensitivity of the pellets stored at the room temperature was not found for one year.
This study accurately measured the half-life of the 179Re radioactive isotope using the 100 MeV proton and high-purity HPGe gamma ray measurement system generated from a high-energy proton linear accelerator at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The result obtained is 19.64 ± 0.26 min. Compared with the past results of the half-life of the 179Re radioisotope known to date, the results of B. Harmatz published in 1960 and B. J. Meijer published in 1975 measured the median value higher than the results obtained in this study. In the case of K. J. Hofstetter, published in 1966, a very large error is also characteristic. This result showed a tendency that the center value was very consistent with the result of this study. The results of Coral M. Baglin's 19.5 min published in 2009 are very consistent with the error range. The obtained measured result was compared with the result of ENSDF (Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File). Through this study, more reliable values were measured for the results of the half-life of the 179Re, which was previously incorrect, and the validity of the recently published results of Coral M. Baglin was confirmed.
This paper described an improved technical method required for proper evaluation of personnel exposures by means of the photographic dosimeter developed by KAERI in lower gamma or X-ray energy regions, with which response of the dosimeter varies significantly. With calibration of the dosimeter in the energy range from 30 to 300 keV, the beam spectrum was carefully selected and specified it adequately. The absorber combinations and absorber thickness used to obtain the specified X-ray spectra from a constant potential X-ray machine were determined theoretically and also experimentally. A correlation between the density and exposure for the four separate energies, such as $49\;keV_{eff},\;154\;keV_{eff}\;250\;keV_{eff}\;and\;662\;keV$, is experimentally determined. As a result, it can be directly evaluated the exposure from the measured response of dosimeter.
The ZnSe sample grown by chemical bath deposition (CBD) method were annealed in Ar gas at $45^{\circ}C$. Using extrapolation method of X-ray diffraction pattern, it was found to have zinc blend structure whose lattice parameter $a_o$ was $5.6687\;{\AA}$. From Hall effect, the mobility was likely to be decreased by impurity scattering at temperature range from 10 K to 150 K and by lattice scattering at temperature range from 150 K to 293 K. The band gap given by the transmission edge changed from $2.700{\underline{5}}\;eV$ at 293 K to $2.873{\underline{9}}\;eV$ at 10 K. Comparing photocurrent peak position with transmission edge, we could find that photocurrent peaks due to excition electrons from valence band, ${\Gamma}_8$ and ${\Gamma}_7$ and to conduction band ${\Gamma}_6$ were observed at photocurrent spectrum. From the photocurrent spectra by illumination of polarized light on the ZnSe thin film, we have found that values of spin orbit coupling splitting ${\Delta}so$ is $0.098{\underline{1}}\;eV$. From the PL spectra at 10K, the peaks corresponding to free bound excitons and D-A pair and a broad emission band due to SA is identified. The binding energy of the free excitons are determined to be $0.061{\underline{2}}\;eV$ and the dissipation energy of the donor -bound exciton and acceptor-bound exciton to be $0.017{\underline{2}}\;eV$, $0.031{\underline{0}}\;eV$, respectively.
