  • Uncanny Valley is a theory proposed by Japanese robot engineer Masahiro Mori in 1970, and refers to the point where the likability drops sharply when the appearance of a robot becomes very similar to a human being without a fully equipped robot. In this study, the theory of existing literature, related papers, and experimental data were analyzed to examine the Uncanny Valley effect that affects character design. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the Uncanny Valley effect is applied to modeling virtual characters distributed in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. To this end, 15 characters were selected based on the similarity with humans in the Marketplace of the Unreal Engine, and similarity with humans and likability were investigated and analyzed. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the Uncanny Valley effect was similarly applied to virtual character modeling, and through this, guidelines for the use of characters by indie game developers or individual developers using Unreal engines were presented. In addition, through result analysis, we tried to examine the direction to be pursued when designing characters.

  • In 3D gaming environment, it is important to simulate the physically plausible behaviors of gaming objects in real time. In particular, rigid body dynamics consists in the heart of most game physics. In this paper, we present a constraint-based rigid body simulation method using continuous collision detection as a collision detection method, and LCP formulation as a collision response method. The continuous collision detection method never misses any collisions and thus is able to accurately report the first time of collision as well as its associated colliding features. Moreover, since the number of colliding features is typically low, it also reduces the complexity in the LCP formulation.

  • Biometric technology with the advance of deep learning enabled the new types of content. Especially, face recognition can provide immersion in terms of convenience and non-compulsiveness, but most commercial content has limitations that are limited to application areas. In this paper, we attempted to overcome these limitations, implement content that can utilize face recognition technology based on realtime video feed. We used Unity engine for high quality graphics, but performance degradation and frame drop occurred. To solve them, we augmented Dlib toolkit and adjusted the resolution image.

  • The popularization of smart phones is increasing interest in individual customized service and various systems have been changing in order to meet such changes to satisfy facilities such as museums. Museum has the element of view, contained purpose of history education, also has role as institution that should have fun and education. In order to achieve this purpose, it is necessary to arouse sufficient interest in cultural assets, In parallel, to provide various contents of cultural assets is essential. Therefore, to provide an efficient viewing cultural assets services in this study make a study to effective method for combined education and evaluation using Unity3D engine and SDK for Vuforia called Augmented Reality development.

  • This paper is to design and implement the system to simulate spontaneously the group behaviors for the various states of doves. To do this, the group behaviors of doves were divided into the four action models such as 'Flying', 'Landing', 'Eating' and 'Taking off'. The steering forces composing of each action model were found and each action model was designed by using the finite state machine. The designed system was implemented by integrating the Ogre engine. From the simulations of the implemented system, the values of the parameters for the steering forces were found so that it can represent the spontaneous group behaviors of doves.

  • This study is a VR system design designed to evaluate the impact of interaction on user experience analyzed by developer's perspective for the interactive VR fashion show. In the VR fashion show design, we produced an interactive system through the four interactive elements of camera viewpoint, cloth, effects, and sound. The interactive design system is proposed based on three application facto rs in VR space design: speed, range, and mapping. The study focused on the user experience based on format conversion to apply the Unity3D engine using 3D model, animation, 2D UI design, and simulation.

  • Looking at the recent game market, classic games released in the past are being re-released with high-quality visuals, and users are generally satisfied. It can be said that the realization of realistic digital actors, which was not possible in the past, is now becoming a reality. Epic Games launched the MetaHuman Creator website in September 2021, allowing anyone to easily create realistic human characters. Since then, the number of animations created using MetaHumans has been increasing. As the characters become more realistic, the movement and expression animations expected by the audience must also be convincingly realized. Until recently, traditional methods were the primary approach for producing realistic character animations. For facial animation, Epic Games introduced an improved method on the Live Link app in 2023, which provides the highest quality among mobile-based techniques. In this context, this paper compares the results of animation produced using both keyframe facial capture and mobile-based capture. After creating an emotional expression animation with four sentences, the results were compared using Unreal Engine. While the facial capture method is more natural and easier to use, the precise and exaggerated expressions possible with the keyframe method cannot be overlooked, suggesting that a hybrid approach using both methods will likely continue for the foreseeable future.

  • Recently, research on the multi-agent system is developed actively in the various fields, especially on the control of complex system and optimization. In this study, we develop a multi-agent system for NPC simulation in game environment. The purpose of the development is to support quick and precise decision by inferencing the situation of the dynamic discrete domain, and to support an optimization process of the agent system. Our approach employed Petri-net as a basic agent model to simplify structure of the system, and used fuzzy inference engine to support decision making in various situation. Our experimentation describes situation of the virtual battlefield between the NPCs, which are divided two groups, such as fuzzy rule based agent and automata based agent. We calculate the percentage of winning and survival rate from the several simulations, and the result describes that the fuzzy rule based agent showed better performance than the automata based agent.

  • This paper aims to study whether the perspective of the character controlled by a player can affect the player on her moral decision. To this end we designed and developed Castaway, an interactive story using Unity3D game engine. The main story plot of Castaway is based on the trial 'R v Dudley and Stephens (also known as mignonette 1884) which occurred at 1884 in U.K. In Castaway, the player can choose either the accused or the victim, and then play the interactive story with the perspective of the chosen character. To investigate the relationship between the player's empathy to the player character and player's moral decision, we conducted a small-scale (n=10) pilot study. Results of the pilot study have shown that different perspectives can influence the player on her empathy to player character and her moral decision. In near future we plan to conduct a main study with more participants.

  • Since korean mobile communication companies each use different mobile platforms, developers must configure and translate their game contents to run under each of the smart phone platforms so that they can be serviced correctly. Nevertheless, such translation tasks require lengthy times and costs. This is one of the reasons why a variety of contents could not be provided. In order to mitigate such difficulty, this paper implemented the mobile contents converter system that converts mobile game contents of the GNEX platform to smart phone contents of the iPhone platform(iOS). The GNEX-to-iPhone automatic mobile contents translation system helps minimize the amount of time and cost required in servicing contents to different mobile communication companies by promptly translating platform-specific-contents to run under iPhone smart phone platforms. Also, the automatic translation and servicing of existing contents increases the reusability of these contents and also the productivity of new contents thereby offering users with a more variety of games.
