  • We present a compact endoscopic probe in a needle form which has a fast beam-scanning capability for optical coherence tomography (OCT). In our study, a beam-scanning OCT imaging needle was fabricated with a 26G syringe needle (0.46 mm in outer diameter) and a thin OCT imaging probe based on the stepwise transitional core (STC) fiber. The imaging probe could freely rotate inside the needle for beam scans. Hence, OCT imaging could be performed without rotation or translation of the needle body. In our design, the structural integrity of the needle's steel tubing was preserved for mechanical robustness. Probing the optical signal was performed through the needle's own window formed at the end. For hand-held operation of our imaging needle, a light and compact scanner module (130 g and 45 × 53 × 60 mm3) was devised. Connected to the imaging needle, it could provide rotational actuation driven by a galvanometer. Because of its finite actuation range, our scanner module did not need a fiber rotary joint which might add undesirable complexity. The beam scan speed was 20 Hz and supported 20 frames per second at the maximum for endoscopic OCT imaging.

  • For continuous laser micro patterning on three-dimensional free form surface, innovative laser system is developed. The two axis galvanometer is combined with the dynamic focusing unit to increase optical distance. Also, it is synchronized with the 3 axis mechanical system. To determine laser machining sequence, laser CAM system is developed. It can make possible of 3D surface micro patterning under $25{\mu}m$ pattern width. The uniformity of pattern width is about 2.8% and it is validated that focal plane is well conserved by the dynamic focusing unit. Velocity and positional information of 1 axis is stage is fed to the scanner control board by the encoder signal and it makes possible real time synchronization. With this system, possible patterning volume is enlarged from $40{\times}40mm^2$ to $40{\times}120{\times}30mm^3$.

  • The display technology on the retina is the key role in inspecting the condition of the patients. 2-dimensional retina image is widely used in the eye examination as of today. Recently, 3-dimensional retina image ones have been introduced to this area, but the quality of the image is not fully satisfied to the operator. For the purpose of developing 3-D retina imaging instrument, the optimization of a 3-D retina imaging system using Code-V tool was investigated in this thesis. He-Ne laser having the wavelength 632.8 nm was used to make a power source to detect the retina. Several lenses and mirrors installed on sledge which were developed to perform focus control on 3-D device were designed to make a beam focusing and direct line. Polygon scanner having 24 mirror facets and galvanometer making tilting movement were utilized to make a 2-D laser plane. Also, design of eye ball had been fulfilled to see the focus of the 2-D plane. Reflected ray from retina detected on the sensor array with the same path. All cognitive components were optimized for aberration correction in order to focus on retina. Results of optimization were compared to those of initial designed optics system. On the basis of above results, the result of third aberration has been corrected to stable values to the optical system. MTF evaluating the resolution of an image has been closely correlated to the diffraction limit and PSF indicating the strength distribution of an image has shown the SR value as 0.9998 having high performance. The possibility of new and powerful 3-D retina image instrument was verified by simulating each component of the instrument by Code-V.
