Purpose : Improved walking is a common goal after stroke. Although the neurodevelopmental intervention(PNF) is the most widely used approach in the walking training of hemiparetic subjects. There is little neurophysiological evidence for its presumed effects on gait symmetry and facilitation of paretic muscles during the therapeutic intervention. The study, therefore, investigated the immediate effects of gait entrainment by a PNF techniques. Methods : Included persons with stroke who were living in the community. Sixteen subjects were assigned to the experimental group participated in a measures design that evaluated the subjects with pre-treatment, post-treatment(8 weeks). Temporal-spatial parameter of gait were analysed for using the computerized GAITRite system. Intervention : Training for the experimental group was carried out 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The training sessions were comprised of 50 minutes of walking with pattern and techniques in PNF. Results : The experimental group had improvements in the functional walking ability after 8 weeks treatment and Post-treatment test scores were more significant than the pre-treatment score. The treatment group demonstrated significantly post-treatment test improvement in gait velocity, cadence and FAP. Post-treatment test scores were more significant than the pre-treatment score(p<0.05). Conclusion : The results of this study showed that the PNF exercise intervention can improve functional gait ability. This study provides evidence for the efficacy of PNF treatment at improving locomotor function in chronic stroke.
This paper describes a gait algorithm and a velocity limitation method for a Leg-Wheel Robot. The gait algorithm enables the robot to preserve continuous locomotion even if the velocity command varies extensively. The velocity limitation method restricts the commanded velocity when it exceeds the mechanical limitation of the robot. Combined use of the velocity limitation method with the gait algorithm ensures the continuity of locomotion, and makes the gait pattern efficient with a long step length and low frequency of leg phase change. These methods can be applied to locomotion on unexplored rough terrain even if the range of roughness is unknown.
Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the intensive functional electrical stimulation(FES) on the improvement of the gait pattern of the chronic hemiplegic patients. Method: Six hemiplegic patients, who could walk independently but have equinovarus deformity during the gait cycle, participated in this study. The affected peroneus longus and tibialis anterior muscles of all subjects were stimulated for 2 weeks period (20 minutes duration, 6 times/day). We measured the activities (mean voltage) of those muscles during the walking, using dynamic EMG. Results: After treatment, there were significant improvements in the strength of peroneus longus and tibialis anterior muscles and the gait speed, but there was no interval change of the spasticity of plantar flexor. The mean voltages of two muscles are significantly increased in all the patients (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that the intensive FES on affected peroneus longus and tibialis anterior muscles in chronic hemiplegic patients could be useful for the improvement of functional gait.

Gait analysis is essential to identify accurate cause and knee condition from patients who display abnormal walking. Traditional linear tools can, however, mask the true structure of motor variability, since biomechanical data from a few strides during the gait have limitation to understanding the system. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a more precise dynamic method. The chaos analysis, a nonlinear technique, focuses on understand how variations in the gait pattern change over time. Eight healthy eight subjects walked on a treadmill for 100 seconds at 60 Hz. Three dimensional walking kinematic data were obtained using two cameras and KWON3D motion analyzer. The largest Lyapunov exponent from the measured knee angular displacement time series was calculated to quantify local stability. This study quantified the variability present in time series generated from gait parameter via chaos analysis. Knee flexion-extension patterns were found to be chaotic. The proposed Lyapunov exponent can be used in rehabilitation and diagnosis of recoverable patients.
Purpose : The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) and Functional Electrical Stimulation(FES) of combined on gait ability in hemiplegic gait. Methods : The subjects of this study were 13 hemiplegic patients. Each subjects was taken PNF pattern and FES of combined with 5 times per week for 4weeks. Pre- and Post-intervention change in gait ability were measured using an Timed up and Go test, stride length of the affected side, step length of the affected side. The data were analyzed using the paired t-test. Results : The results of this study were showed significantly improvement in TUG, stride length of the affected side, step length of the affected side after intervention. Conclusion : These results suggest that the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) and Functional Electrical Stimulation(FES) of combined exercise is an effective way of improving gait ability for hemiplegic patients.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the variations in gait parameters according to arm slings used in healthy adults. Twenty healthy adults (9 males, 11 females) participated in this study and walked at self-selected speeds on a GAITRite-instrumented carpet. They were randomly assigned conditions: without an arm sling, a care sling, a Harris hemi arm sling, a CVA sling, and a Rolyan humeral cuff sling. The following gait parameters were analyzed: the temporo-spatial parameters of gait velocity, swing phase, single support, cadence. In the comparison of parameters in each trial, step length was statistically significantly changed(p=.002). The right step length was significantly decreased in the Harris hemi arm sling and increased in the Rolyan humeral cuff sling when compared with no sling. This study found that several different types arm slings varied gait pattern in healthy adults.
Objective: This study describes the case of a patient with a left basal ganglia (BG) infarct who had made almost a complete recovery upon discharge from the hospital in 2014 but who was re-admitted after 31 months with a worsened hemiplegic gait. Methods: The patient had undergone no rehabilitation treatment in the 31 months since his discharge. When the patient was re-admitted to our hospital in 2017, stance and gait data were collected on the patient using a treadmill gait analysis system. In addition, the patient underwent a manual muscle test (MMT) evaluation, and his Motricity index (MI) and modified Barthel index (MBI) scores were recorded. After rehabilitation for one month, the patient was reassessed, and the results were compared to those on the day of re-admission and those recorded in 2014. Results: Compared to the 2014 evaluation results, the patient's stance parameters and gait parameters had worsened at re-admission. However, there was no significant change in the patient's MMT grade or MI and MBI scores in comparison to the results of the 2014 evaluation. After one month of rehabilitation, the patient was re-evaluated again, but there was no significant change in comparison to the evaluation results at re-admission. Conclusion: Some of the stroke patients who have passed six months since the onset of their stroke may require ongoing rehabilitation although the functions of them is almost recovered. Because there is a possibility that recovered functions get worse again without any rehabilitation for a long time. And once the recovered functions get worse, re-recovery of them is not easy.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the difference in reaction patterns during the support phase after perturbation in gait according to different age. A total of 12 subjects participated; 5 elderly and 7 adults(control), to investigate the differences between normal and perturbed gait. The step length didn't change during normal and perturbed gait but was longer in the control group. There was no difference in the step width. When the right foot was perturbed, the control group's left foot speed was faster than the elderly group's which was to maintain stability. The elderly flexed both right and left knees more than the control group. After the perturbation, the elderly group had a larger trunk anterior flexion. With the larger flexion of both legs of the elderly group it shows that the lack of knee flexion strength is a factor, that could cause falling and so a prevention program should focus on strengthening the quadriceps. With the excessive trunk flexion after the perturbation by the elderly group observed, it is suggested that while walking everyday a good routine of walking with an upright posture should be developed.

Walking is a periodic motion that contains specific phases and is a basic movement method for humans. Through gait analysis, various musculoskeletal health conditions can be identified. In this study, we propose a calf wearable sensor system that can perform gait analysis without space limitations. Using a ToF(: Time-of-Flight) sensor that measures distance and an IMU(: Inertial Measurement Unit) sensor that measures inclination the heel trajectory of walking was derived by proposed method. In case of abnormal gait with risk of fall, gait is evaluated by analyzing the change pattern of the heel trajectory.
