This study was designed to examine the effects of Salicornia herbacea L. (glasswort: GW) on the lipid peroxidation and mineral levels in diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200-220 g by an injection of streptozotocin (STZ) dissolved in a citrate buffer into the tail vein at a dose of 45 mg/kg of body weight. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed an AIN-93 recommended diet and the experimental groups were fed a modified diet containing 10% and 20% of glasswort powder for 4 weeks. The experimental groups were divided into 6 groups which consisted of normal (N)-control group, N-GW 10% and N-GW 20% treated groups, STZ-control, STZ-GW 10% and STZ-GW 20% treated groups. The rats' liver and muscle glycogen, liver and kidney protein, cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) in liver, malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver and kidney values were measured, along with the hepatic of chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) content. The liver glycogen levels was significantly affected in N-GW 20% group among all the experimental groups. The liver MDA levels of the STZ-GW 10% and STZ-GW 20% groups were significantly lower than for the STZ-control group. There were significant differences between the N-control group and the STZ-control group in the hepatic of Zn levels. The hepatic of Cr levels in the N-GW 20% and STZ-GW 10% and STZ-GW 20% groups were significanly higher than for the each control groups. These results exhibited dose related effect of glasswort and it may have favorable influence on lipid peroxidation in the liver.
This study was designed to examine the effects of Salicornia herbacea L. (glasswort: GW) on hepatic antioxidative enzyme activities in diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200-220g by an injection of streptozotocin (STZ) dissolved in a citrate buffer into the tail vein at a dose of 45 mg/kg of body weight. The activities of Xanthine oxidase (XOD), glutathione- S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and CAT (CAT) were measured in the homogenates of liver. The activity of CAT was lower in the supplementary group with glasswort compare to the STZcontrol group but it was not significantly different. The activity of SOD was not significant in all of experimental groups. The activity of GR was significantly increased in the normal supplementary group with glasswort, and GPX activity was significantly increased in STZ-GW 10% group compare to the STZ-control group. The activity of XOD was significantly decreased in the all of supplementary groups with glasswort. The activity of GST was significantly increased in the N-GW 20% group and it was significantly decreased in the STZ-GW 20% group. These results show that the supplementation of glasswort may have favorable influence on antioxidative status in diabetic rats and it may be useful for the diabetic complications as functional food.
This study was designed to examine the effects of Salicornia herbacea L. (glasswort: GW) on the plasma blood glucose and lipid metabolites in diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200-220g by an injection of streptozotocin (STZ) dissolved in a citrate buffer into the tail vein at a dose of 45 mg/kg of body weight. The rats' body weights, aminotransferase activities and hematocrit (Hct) values were measured, along with plasma levels of glucose, protein, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride (TG) and free fatty acids (FFA). The non-diabetic rats gained weight, while the diabetic rats lost weight. There were significant differences between the control group and the diabetic groups in the weight of the kidney, liver and pancreas. Asparate aminotransferase activity was lower in the non-diabetic control group compared to diabetic experimental groups, even though the difference was not significant. The plasma protein of N-GW 20% group was lower among all experimental groups but it was not significantly different. The blood glucose levels of the STZ-GW 10% group and STZ-GW 20% group were significantly lower than for the diabetic-control group. There were no significant difference of cholesterol levels among diabetic groups. The normal rats of 20% glasswort group in FFA and TG levels showed significant changes among all groups. These results exhibited dose related effect of glasswort and it may contain antihypoglycemic compounds.
Chronic inflammation, which results from continuous exposure to antigens, is one of major reasons for tissue damage and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and type 2 diabetes. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of extracts (hexane, $CHCl_3$, MeOH, $MeOH/H_2O$, and $H_2O$) from GW10-45, which is our new cultivar of an edible mushroom Pleurotus ferulae (ASI 2803 and ASI 2778), in RAW264.7 murine macrophages. None of the extracts showed cytotoxicity in RAW264.7 cells and the hexane, CHCl and H extracts reduced nitric oxide (NO) production, an important inflammatory marker, in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Particularly, the extract (CG45) inhibited NO production more than the other extracts did. To elucidate the effects of CG45 on molecular targets involved in pro-inflammatory responses, we performed western blot analysis. Expression of inducible nitric oxide (iNOS) significantly decreased in LPS and CG45 co-incubated cells compared to that in LPS only-treated cells. Additionally, another protein thatplays a critical role in inflammation, was down-regulated in cells treated with both LPS and CG45. In the nuclear factor $(NF)-{\kappa}B$ pathway, phosphorylation of $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ decreased in RAW264.7 cells treated with both LPS and CG45. Furthermore, CG45 inhibited the phosphorylation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Conclusively, CG45 could suppress pro-inflammatory responses in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells by down-regulating not only the phosphorylation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ and $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ but also the expression of iNOS and COX-2 without any cytotoxicity.

Due to its self-configuring nature, the tactical mobile ad hoc network is used for communications between tactical units and the command and control center (CCC) in battlefields, where communication infrastructure is not available. However, when a tactical unit moves far away from the CCC or there are geographical constraints, the data link between two communicating nodes can be broken, which results in an invalid data route from the tactical units to CCC. In order to address this problem, in this paper we propose a hierarchical connectivity maintenance scheme, namely ADLCoM (Autonomous Data Link Connectivity Maintenance). In ADLCoM, each tactical unit has one or more GW (gateway), which checks the status of data links between tactical units. If there is a possibility of link breakage, GWs request ground or aerial unmanned vehicles to become a relay for the data link. The simulation results, based on tactical scenarios, show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the network performance with respect to data delivery ratio.

In 2008, the global photovoltaic(PV) market reached 5.6GW and the cumulative PV power installed totalled almost 15GW compared to 9GW in 2007. Due to a favourable feed-in-tariff, Korea emerged in 2008 as the 4th largest PV market worldwide. PV power installation rose 495.5 percent to 268MW in 2008 compare to 45MW in 2007. Building integrated photovoltaic(BIPV) has the potential to become a major source of renewable energy in the urban environment. BIPV has significant influenced on the reflection by rear materials such as white back sheet and the heat transfer through the building envelope because of the change of the thermal resistance by adding or replacing the building elements. In this study, to use as suitable building materials into environmentally friendly house like green home, characteristic analysis of BIPV module according to rear materials achieved. Electrical output of PV module with white back sheet is high about 10% compared to other pv module because of 83% reflectivity of white back sheet compared to 8.4% reflectivity of other PV modules with different rear materials(black back sheet and glass). In the result of outdoor experiment during a year, electrical output of four different PV module is decreased about 3.72%.

As increasing the importance of renewable energy recently, the scale of a wind power plant is increasing to the number of GW scale and specially, it is trend to move from onshore to offshore to use the higher quantity and quality of wind. Consequently to meet the trend, it is largely considered the importance of communication protocol to control and monitor remotely. But, because the communication protocol between the control center and a wind turbine has been independently developed by each wind turbine vendor, it is absence of the compatibility and extensibility when the heterogeneous wind turbines are installed in the wind farm. The IEC 61400-25 is the specifying standard for these problems in Europe. In this paper, we will show the state of these problems and present a new structure of communication based on the IEC 61400-25 to get the compatibility and extensibility between a control center and wind turbines.
