  • The majority of product users rely on the reviews that are posted on the appropriate website. Both users and the product's manufacturer could benefit from these reviews. Daily, thousands of reviews are submitted; how is it possible to read them all? Sentiment analysis has become a critical field of research as posting reviews become more and more common. Machine learning techniques that are supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised have worked very hard to harvest this data. The complicated and technological area of feature engineering falls within machine learning. Using deep learning, this tedious process may be completed automatically. Numerous studies have been conducted on deep learning models like LSTM, CNN, RNN, and GRU. Each model has employed a certain type of data, such as CNN for pictures and LSTM for language translation, etc. According to experimental results utilizing a publicly accessible dataset with reviews for all of the models, both positive and negative, and CNN, the best model for the dataset was identified in comparison to the other models, with an accuracy rate of 81%.

  • Smart factory companies are installing various sensors in production facilities and collecting field data. However, there are relatively few companies that actively utilize collected data, academic research using field data is actively underway. This study seeks to develop a model that detects anomalies in the process by analyzing spindle power data from a company that processes shafts used in automobile throttle valves. Since the data collected during machining processing is time series data, the model was developed through unsupervised learning by applying the Holt Winters technique and various deep learning algorithms such as RNN, LSTM, GRU, BiRNN, BiLSTM, and BiGRU. To evaluate each model, the difference between predicted and actual values was compared using MSE and RMSE. The BiLSTM model showed the optimal results based on RMSE. In order to diagnose abnormalities in the developed model, the critical point was set using statistical techniques in consultation with experts in the field and verified. By collecting and preprocessing real-world data and developing a model, this study serves as a case study of utilizing time-series data in small and medium-sized enterprises.

  • Climate change causes fluctuations in water quality in the aquatic environment, which can cause changes in water circulation patterns and severe adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems in the future. Therefore, research is needed to predict and respond to water quality changes caused by climate change in advance. In this study, we tried to predict the dissolved oxygen (DO), chlorophyll-a, and turbidity of the Paldang reservoir for about two weeks using long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent units (GRU), which are deep learning algorithms based on recurrent neural networks. The model was built based on real-time water quality data and meteorological data. The observation period was set from July to September in the summer of 2021 (Period 1) and from March to May in the spring of 2022 (Period 2). We tried to select an algorithm with optimal predictive power for each water quality parameter. In addition, to improve the predictive power of the model, an important variable extraction technique using random forest was used to select only the important variables as input variables. In both Periods 1 and 2, the predictive power after extracting important variables was further improved. Except for DO in Period 2, GRU was selected as the best model in all water quality parameters. This methodology can be useful for preventive water quality management by identifying the variability of water quality in advance and predicting water quality in a short period.

  • The fourth industrial revolution, internet of things, and the expansion of online web services have increased an exponential growth and deployment in the number of cloud data centers (CDC). The cloud is emerging as new paradigm for delivering the Internet-based computing services. Due to the dynamic and non-linear workload and availability of the resources is a critical problem for efficient workload and resource management. In this paper, we propose the particle swarm optimization (PSO) based gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network for efficient prediction the future value of the CPU and memory usage in the cloud data centers. We investigate the hyper-parameters of the GRU for better model to effectively predict the cloud resources. We use the Google Cluster traces to evaluate the aforementioned PSO-GRU prediction. The experimental shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we designed a new enzyme function prediction model PSCREM based on a study that compared and evaluated CNN and LSTM/GRU models, which are the most widely used deep learning models in the field of predicting functions and structures using protein sequences in 2020, under the same conditions. Sequence evolution information was used to preserve detailed patterns which would miss in CNN convolution, and the relationship information between amino acids with functional significance was extracted through overlapping RNNs. It was referenced to feature map production. The RNN family of algorithms used in small CNN-RNN models are LSTM algorithms and GRU algorithms, which are usually stacked two to three times over 100 units, but in this paper, small RNNs consisting of 10 and 20 units are overlapped. The model used the PSSM profile, which is transformed from protein sequence data. The experiment proved 86.4% the performance for the problem of predicting the main classes of enzyme number, and it was confirmed that the performance was 84.4% accurate up to the sub-sub classes of enzyme number. Thus, PSCREM better identifies unique patterns related to protein function through overlapped RNN, and Overlapped RNN is proposed as a novel methodology for protein function and structure prediction extraction.

  • The deployment of sensors for Structural Health Monitoring requires a complicated network arrangement, ground truthing, and calibration for validating sensor performance periodically. Any conventional sensor on a structural element is also subjected to static and dynamic vertical loadings in conjunction with other environmental factors, such as brightness, noise, temperature, and humidity. A structural model with strain gauges was built and tested to get realistic sensory information. This paper investigates different deep learning architectures and algorithms, including unsupervised, autoencoder, and supervised methods, to benchmark blind drift calibration methods using deep learning. It involves a fully connected neural network (FCNN), a long short-term memory (LSTM), and a gated recurrent unit (GRU) to address the blind drift calibration problem (i.e., performing calibrations of installed sensors when ground truth is not available). The results show that the supervised methods perform much better than unsupervised methods, such as an autoencoder, when ground truths are available. Furthermore, taking advantage of time-series information, the GRU model generates the most precise predictions to remove the drift overall.

  • In this paper, we propose the deep learning-based neural network model to predict bunker price. In the shipping industry, since fuel oil accounts for the largest portion of ship operation costs and its price is highly volatile, so companies can secure market competitiveness by making fuel oil purchasing decisions based on rational and scientific method. In this paper, short-term predictive analysis of HSFO 380CST in Singapore is conducted by using three recurrent neural network models like RNN, LSTM, and GRU. As a result, first, the forecasting performance of RNN models is better than LSTM and GRUs using long-term memory, and thus the predictive contribution of long-term information is low. Second, since the predictive performance of recurrent neural network models is superior to the previous studies using econometric models, it is confirmed that the recurrent neural network models should consider nonlinear properties of bunker price. The result of this paper will be helpful to improve the decision quality of bunker purchasing.

  • Machine reading comprehension is the task of understanding a given context and finding the correct response in that context. A simple recurrent unit (SRU) is a model that solves the vanishing gradient problem in a recurrent neural network (RNN) using a neural gate, such as a gated recurrent unit (GRU) and long short-term memory (LSTM); moreover, it removes the previous hidden state from the input gate to improve the speed compared to GRU and LSTM. A self-matching network, used in R-Net, can have a similar effect to coreference resolution because the self-matching network can obtain context information of a similar meaning by calculating the attention weight for its own RNN sequence. In this paper, we construct a dataset for Korean machine reading comprehension and propose an $S^2-Net$ model that adds a self-matching layer to an encoder RNN using multilayer SRU. The experimental results show that the proposed $S^2-Net$ model has performance of single 68.82% EM and 81.25% F1, and ensemble 70.81% EM, 82.48% F1 in the Korean machine reading comprehension test dataset, and has single 71.30% EM and 80.37% F1 and ensemble 73.29% EM and 81.54% F1 performance in the SQuAD dev dataset.

  • Information extraction can facilitate the intensive analysis of documents by providing semantic triples which consist of named entities and their relations recognized in the texts. However, most of the research so far has been carried out separately for named entity recognition and relation extraction as individual studies, and as a result, the effective performance evaluation of the entire information extraction systems was not performed properly. This paper introduces two models of end-to-end information extraction that can extract various entity names in clinical records and their relationships in the form of semantic triples, namely pipeline and joint models and compares their performances in depth. The pipeline model consists of an entity recognition sub-system based on bidirectional GRU-CRFs and a relation extraction module using multiple encoding scheme, whereas the joint model was implemented with a single bidirectional GRU-CRFs equipped with multi-head labeling method. In the experiments using i2b2/VA 2010, the performance of the pipeline model was 5.5% (F-measure) higher. In addition, through a comparative experiment with existing state-of-the-art systems using large-scale neural language models and manually constructed features, the objective performance level of the end-to-end models implemented in this paper could be identified properly.

  • This paper proposes a machine learning-based emotion analysis system that detects a user's depression through their SNS posts. We first made a list of keywords related to depression in Korean, then used these to create a training data by crawling Twitter data - 1,297 positive and 1,032 negative tweets in total. Lastly, to identify the best machine learning model for text-based depression detection purposes, we compared RNN, LSTM, and GRU in terms of performance. Our experiment results verified that the GRU model had the accuracy of 92.2%, which is 2~4% higher than other models. We expect that the finding of this paper can be used to prevent depression by analyzing the users' SNS posts.
