  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD in short) approach is now playing an important role in the engineering process recently. Generating proper grid system for the region of interest in time is prerequisite for the efficient numerical calculation of flow physics using CFD approach. Grid generation is, however, usually considered as a major obstacle for a routine and successful application of numerical approaches in the engineering process. CFD approach based on the unstructured grid system is gaining popularity due to its simplicity and efficiency for generating grid system compared to the structured grid approaches. In this paper an automated triangular surface grid generation using CAD surface data is proposed According to the present method, the CAD surface data imported in the STL format is processed to identify feature edges defining the topology and geometry of the surface shape first. When the feature edges are identified, node points along the edges are distributed. The initial fronts which connect those feature edge nodes are constructed and then they are advanced along the CAD surface data inward until the surface is fully covered by triangular surface grid cells using Advancing Front Method. It is found that this approach can be implemented in an automated way successfully saving man-hours and reducing human-errors in generating triangular surface grid system.

  • By using numerical simulation, vast and detailed information and observation of the physics of flow over a train model can be obtained. However, the accuracy of the numerical results is questionable as it is affected by grid convergence error. This paper describes a systematic method of computational grid refinement for the Unsteady Reynolds Navier-Stokes (URANS) of flow around a generic model of trains using the OpenFOAM software. The sensitivity of the computed flow field on different mesh resolutions is investigated in this paper. This involves solutions on three different grid refinements, namely fine, medium, and coarse grids to investigate the effect of grid dependency. The level of grid independence is evaluated using a form of Richardson extrapolation and Grid Convergence Index (GCI). This is done by comparing the GCI results of various parameters between different levels of mesh resolutions. In this study, monotonic convergence criteria were achieved, indicating that the grid convergence error was progressively reduced. The fine grid resolution's GCI value was less than 1%. The results from a simulation of the finest grid resolution, which includes pressure coefficient, drag coefficient and flow visualization, are presented and compared to previous available data.

  • In this paper, a methodology was proposed to reduce the electrical level and spatial size of the smart grid with distributed generations (DGs) to a scale in which the electrical phenomena and control strategies for disturbances on the smart grid could be safely and freely experimented and observed. Based on the design methodology, a micro smart grid simulator with a substation transformer capacity of 190VA, voltage level of 19V, maximum breaking current of 20A and size of $2{\times}2m^2$ was designed by reducing the substation transformer capacity of 45MVA, voltage level of 23kV and area of $2{\times}2km^2$ of the smart grid to over one thousandth, and also reducing the maximum breaking current of 12kA of the smart grid to 1/600. It was verified that the proposed design methodology and designed micro smart grid simulator were very effective by identifying how all of the fault currents are limited to within the maximum breaking current of 20A, and by confirming that the maximum error between the fault currents obtained from the fault analysis method and the simulation method is within 1.8% through the EMTP-RV simulation results to the micro smart grid simulator model.

  • Input filters are very important to matrix converters (MCs). They are used to improve grid side current waveform quality and to reduce the input voltage distortion supplied to the grid side. Due to the effects of the input filter and the output power, the grid side power factor (PF) is not at unity when the input power factor angle is zero. In this paper, the displacement angle between the grid side phase current and the phase voltage affected by the input filter parameters and output power is analyzed. Based on this, a new grid side PF unity compensation method implemented in the indirect space vector pulse width modulation (ISVPWM) method is presented, which has a larger compensation angle than the traditional compensation method, showing a higher grid side PF at unity in a wide output power range. Simulation and experimental results verify that the analysis of the displacement angle between the grid side phase current and the phase voltage affected by the input filter and output power is right and that the proposed compensation method has a better grid side PF at unity.

  • Recent CFD solvers in engineering have to treat geometrically complex domains and moving body problems. In ship hydrodynamics, flow around the stern and ship motions in waves are examples of such cases mentioned before. The unstructured grid scheme is successfully applied for these problems, but it has weakness of inefficient memory usage and intensive computational time as compared to the structured grid method. Overset grid scheme is one of the alternatives for structured grid system taking advantage of fast and memory efficiency. Overset grid scheme is especially useful for moving body problem because there is no need to re-mesh around the body. In this paper, we adopted the Suggar++, the grid connectivity and interpolation utility for the overlapping grid, to WAVIS which is the in-house flow solver of KRISO. Then we introduced some applications using the overset grid method for flow analysis around the ships. The computed results show that WAVIS with Suggar++ is practically feasible and has an advantages for moving geometry cases.

  • For applications that are grid enabled, the grid can offer a resource balancing effect by scheduling grid jobs on machines with low utilization. When jobs communicate with each other, the internet, or with storage resources, an advanced scheduler could schedule them to minimize communications traffic or minimize the distance of the communications. We propose an intelligent load distribution algorithm to minimize communications traffic and distance of the communications using genetic algorithm. The experiments show the proposed load redistribution algorithm performs efficiently in the variance of load in grid environments.

  • A prediction of store separation trajectory using grid survey method has been conducted. For the grid survey method, store's aerodynamic flowfield data such as freestream and grid data is needed to solve 6 degree of freedom(6-DOF) equations of motion. In the presented study, aerodynamic flowfield data was generated by Euler solver instead of CTS wind tunnel test. The predicted trajectories shows good agreement with CTS test results.

  • Smart grid is widely considered to be a next generation power grid, which will be integrated with information feedback communications. However, smart grid communication technologies are subject to inefficient spectrum allocation problems. Cognitive radio networks can solve the problemof spectrumscarcity by opening the under-utilized licensed bands to secondary users. In this paper, adaptive cognitive radio spectrum sensing and sharing algorithms are developed for smart grid environments. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in comparison with other existing schemes.
