Optimal Implementation of Lightweight Block Cipher PIPO on CUDA GPGPU (CUDA GPGPU 상에서 경량 블록 암호 PIPO의 최적 구현)

  • With the spread of the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and big data, the need for high-speed encryption for applications is emerging. GPU optimization can be used to validate cryptographic analysis results or reduced versions theoretically obtained by the GPU in a reasonable time. In this paper, PIPO lightweight encryption implemented in various environments was implemented on GPU. Optimally implemented considering the brute force attack on PIPO. In particular, the optimization implementation applying the bit slicing technique and the GPU elements were used as much as possible. As a result, the implementation of the proposed method showed a throughput of about 19.5 billion per second in the RTX 3060 environment, achieving a throughput of about 122 times higher than that of the previous study.

Implementation and Performance Evaluation of a Video-Equipped Real-Time Fire Detection Method at Different Resolutions using a GPU (GPU를 이용한 다양한 해상도의 비디오기반 실시간 화재감지 방법 구현 및 성능평가)

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient parallel implementation method of a widely used complex four-stage fire detection algorithm using a graphics processing unit (GPU) to improve the performance of the algorithm and analyze the performance of the parallel implementation method. In addition, we use seven different resolution videos (QVGA, VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA+, UXGA, QXGA) as inputs of the four-stage fire detection algorithm. Moreover, we compare the performance of the GPU-based approach with that of the CPU implementation for each different resolution video. Experimental results using five different fire videos with seven different resolutions indicate that the execution time of the proposed GPU implementation outperforms that of the CPU implementation in terms of execution time and takes a 25.11ms per frame for the UXGA resolution video, satisfying real-time processing (30 frames per second, 30fps) of the fire detection algorithm.

  • SPECK and SIMON are lightweight block ciphers developed by NSA(National Security Agency), and SIMECK is a new lightweight block cipher that combines the advantages of SPECK and SIMON. In this paper, a large-capacity encryption using SPECK, SIMON, and SIMECK is implemented using a GPU with efficient parallel processing. CUDA library provided by NVIDIA was used, and performance was maximized by using CUDA assembly language PTX to eliminate unnecessary operations. When comparing the results of the simple CPU implementation and the implementation using the GPU, it was possible to perform large-scale encryption at a faster speed. In addition, when comparing the implementation using the C language and the implementation using the PTX when implementing the GPU, it was confirmed that the performance increased further when using the PTX.

Optimization of Warp-wide CUDA Implementation for Parallel Shifted Sort Algorithm (병렬 Shifted Sort 알고리즘의 Warp 단위 CUDA 구현 최적화)

  • This paper presents and discusses an implementation of the GPU shifted sorting method to find approximate k nearest neighbors which executes within "warp", the minimum execution unit in GPU parallel architecture. Also, this paper presents the comparison results with other two common nearest neighbor searching methods, GPU-based kd-tree and ANN (Approximate Nearest Neighbor) library. The proposed implementation focuses on the cases when k is small, i.e. 2, 4, 8, and 16, which are handled efficiently within warp to consider it is very common for applications to handle small k's. Also, this paper discusses optimization ways to implementation by improving memory management in a loop for the CUB open library and adopting CUDA commands which are supported by GPU hardware. The proposed implementation shows more than 16-fold speed-up against GPU-based other methods in the tests, implying that the improvement would become higher for more larger input data.

  • Many algorithms for computer vision and pattern recognition have recently been implemented on GPU (graphic processing unit) for faster computational times. However, the implementation has two problems. First, the programmer should master the fundamentals of the graphics shading languages that require the prior knowledge on computer graphics. Second, in a job that needs much cooperation between CPU and GPU, which is usual in image processing and pattern recognition contrary to the graphic area, CPU should generate raw feature data for GPU processing as much as possible to effectively utilize GPU performance. This paper proposes more quick and efficient implementation of neural networks on both GPU and multi-core CPU. We use CUDA (compute unified device architecture) that can be easily programmed due to its simple C language-like style instead of GPU to solve the first problem. Moreover, OpenMP (Open Multi-Processing) is used to concurrently process multiple data with single instruction on multi-core CPU, which results in effectively utilizing the memories of GPU. In the experiments, we implemented neural networks-based text extraction system using the proposed architecture, and the computational times showed about 15 times faster than implementation on only GPU without OpenMP.

  • We developed a method of accelerating the operation speed of communication systems for SDR(Software Defined Radio) systems in WiBro environment. In this paper, we propose a new scheme of using GPU(Graphics Processing Unit) for implementing the communication system which perform with the functionality of SDR. In general, communication systems is made by DSP(Digital Signalling Processor) or FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array). However, in this case, there are exist the problem of implementation and debugging caused by each CPU characteristic. The GPU is optimized for vector processing because it usually consists of multiple processors and each processor in GPU is composed of a set of threads. We also developed Framework to use GPU and CPU resources effectively for reducing the operation time. From the various simulation, it is confirmed that GPU system have good performance in WiBro system.

  • The need for dedicated hardware continue to decrease as the mobile CPU's performance increases. But, there is a limit to a mobile CPU's performance. GP-GPU(General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units) can improve performance without adding other dedicated hardware. This paper presents the implementation of Inverse Quantization, Inverse DCT and Color Space Conversion module in H.264/AVC decoder using GP-GPU for a mobile environments. The proposed architecture improves approximately 40% of performance when it use all the features.

Computationally Efficient Implementation of a Hamming Code Decoder Using Graphics Processing Unit

  • This paper presents a computationally efficient implementation of a Hamming code decoder on a graphics processing unit (GPU) to support real-time software-defined radio, which is a software alternative for realizing wireless communication. The Hamming code algorithm is challenging to parallelize effectively on a GPU because it works on sparsely located data items with several conditional statements, leading to non-coalesced, long latency, global memory access, and huge thread divergence. To address these issues, we propose an optimized implementation of the Hamming code on the GPU to exploit the higher parallelism inherent in the algorithm. Experimental results using a compute unified device architecture (CUDA)-enabled NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560, including 335 cores, revealed that the proposed approach achieved a 99x speedup versus the equivalent CPU-based implementation.

Analysis of GPU-based Parallel Shifted Sort Algorithm by comparing with General GPU-based Tree Traversal (일반적인 GPU 트리 탐색과의 비교실험을 통한 GPU 기반 병렬 Shifted Sort 알고리즘 분석)

  • It is common to achieve lower performance in traversing tree data structures in GPU than one expects. In this paper, we analyze the reason of lower-than-expected performance in GPU tree traversal and present that the warp divergences is caused by the branch instructions ("if${\ldots}$ else") which appear commonly in tree traversal CUDA codes. Also, we compare the parallel shifted sort algorithm which can reduce the number of warp divergences with a kd-tree CUDA implementation to show that the shifted sort algorithm can work faster than the kd-tree CUDA implementation thanks to less warp divergences. As the analysis result, the shifted sort algorithm worked about 16-fold faster than the kd-tree CUDA implementation for $2^{23}$ query points and $2^{23}$ data points in $R^3$ space. The performance gaps tend to increase in proportion to the number of query points and data points.

An Effective Parallel Implementation of Sound Synthesis of Guitar using GPU (GPU를 이용한 기타의 음 합성을 위한 효과적인 병렬 구현)

  • This paper proposes an effective parallel implementation of a physical modeling synthesis of guitar on the GPU environment. We used appropriate filter coefficients and adjusted the length of delay line for each open string to generate 44,100 six-polyphonic guitar sounds (E2, A2, D3, G4, B3, E4) by using physical modeling synthesis. In addition, we analyzed the physical modeling synthesis algorithm and observed that we can exploit parallelism inherent in the length of delay line. Thus, we assigned CUDA cores as many as the length of delay line and effectively implemented the physical modeling synthesis using GPU to achieve the highest performance. Experimental results indicated that synthetic guitar sounds using GPU were very similar to the original sounds when we compared their spectra. In addition, GPU achieved 68x and 3x better performance than high-performance TI DSP and CPU, respectively. Furthermore, this paper implemented and evaluated the performance of multi-GPU systems for the physical modeling algorithm.
