  • In this study, the performance and antifouling properties of polysulfone (PSf) and polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVDF/PVP) membranes in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) were investigated. The membranes were prepared via phase inversion method, and then characterized by a set of analyses including contact angle, porosity and water flux and applied in a lab-scale MBR system. Soluble microbial product (SMP), extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), FTIR, gel permission chromatography (GPC) and particle size distribution (PSD) analyses were also carried out for MBR system. The results showed that the MBR with PSf membrane had higher hydrophobic organic compounds which resulted in formation of larger flocs in MBR. However, in this MBR had high compressibility coefficient of cake layer was higher (n=0.91) compared to MBR with PVDF/PVP membrane (n=0.8); hence, the fouling was more profound. GPC analysis revealed that compounds with molecular weight lower than 2 kDa are more formed on PSf membrane more than PVDF/PVP membrane. The results of FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of polysaccharide and protein compounds on the cake layer of both membranes which was in good agreement with EPS analysis. In addition, the results showed that their concentration was higher for the cake on PSf membrane.

  • To demonstrate their possibilities as an enhanced vaccine delivery system, protein-loaded Poly lactide glycolide copolymer (PLGA) microspheres were prepared with different physical characteristics. Ethyl acetate (EA) solvent extraction process was employed to prepare microspheres and the effects of process parameters on drug release properties were evaluated. The biodeuadability of microspheres was also evaluated by the pH change and GPC (Gel permeation chromatography). Primary IgG antibody responses in BALB/c mice were compared with protein saline solutions as negative controls and adsorbed alum suspensions as positive controls after single subcutaneous injection for in vivo studies. The microspheres showed a erosion with a highly porous structure and did not keep their spherical shape at 45 days and this result could be confirmed by GPC. In vitro release of proteinous drug showed initial burst effect in all batches of microspheres, followed by gradual release over the next 4 weeks. PLGA microspheres were degraded until 45 days and the secondary structure of OVA was not affected by the preparation method. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays demonstrated that the single subcutaneous administrations of OVA-loaded PLGA microspheres induced enhanced serum IgG antibody response in comparison to negative and positive controls. These results demonstrated that microspheres providing the controlled release of antigens might be useful in advanced vaccine formulations for the parenteral carrier system.

  • Using gel filtration chromatography (GFC), pure separation of high molecular silk fibroin was obtained and silk fibroin microsphere particles (SFMP) could be simply made by spray dryer method. Also, some of its physicochemical properties and morphology were investigated. The average molecular weight (Mw) of pure silk fibroin protein dissolved in calcium chloride is about 61, 500 g/mol as measured by gel permeation chromatography(GPC). (omitted)

  • A neural net based generalized predictive control(NNGPC) is presented for a hydraulic servo position control system. The proposed scheme employs generalized predictive control, where the future output being generated from the output of artificial neural networks. The proposed NNGPC does not require an accurate mathematical model for the nonlinear hydraulic system and takes less calculation time than GPC algorithm if the teaming of neural network is done. Simulation studies have been conducted on the position control of a hydraulic motor to validate and illustrate the proposed method.

  • The paper proposes a class of discrete-time adaptive controller which may be applicable without sufficient a priori information. Against choices of the Information, GPC algorithm may seem to be more robust than any other methods reported, but it is the method based on Indirect approach. It is, therefore, reasonable to propose an algorithm via the zero-gain prediction, in which the control parameters are directly estimated and calculated.

  • Oxidized polyethylene wax (OPEW) is, one of the food additives, used as a coating agent in citrus fruits and nuts. OPEW is authorized to quantum satis in EU, USA, and is acceptable less than 250 mg/kg in Australia and New Zealand. But OPEW is unauthorized as a food additive in Korea. This study was to establish the analytical method of OPEW and demonstrate the effective application of various food samples. We first conducted to compare the various analytical method including acid value (AV), high temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS), gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). This result indicated that FT-IR spectrum of OPEW treated food sample displayed absorption bands for carbonyl group (C=O, $1714cm^{-1}$), ester group (C-O, $1463cm^{-1}$), aliphatic group (C-H, $2916cm^{-1}$). Furthermore, IR spectrum of OPEW treated food sample showed similar tendency with IR spectrum of OPEW standard. Therefore, it is confirmed that analytical method using FT-IR can be detected on analysis of OPEW in food. As a result of monitoring of 111 samples using established analytical method, OPEW was not detected in the food samples.

  • A theory is given for determining the molecular weights of block copolymers from the experimental elution volume in GPC. Interaction effect between a sample of block copolymer and a column packing material as well as the size effect are separately considered for the first time applying the partial exclusion mechanism proposed by Dawkins. The molecular weight determination shows 6${\%}$ standard-deviation from the molecular weights measured by an osmometric method for eight block copolymers, which is much more improved result than other methods, e.g., the universal plot method (13 ${\%}$) and the Runyon's method (12 ${\%}$). The reason which explains the better result is that our theory takes into account the interaction effect correctly.

  • Thermal decomposition reactions of polystyrene using a new heating medium were carried out by a batch system at 190-280 $^{\circ}C$ to clarify the manner in which decomposition is initiated. Polystyrene obtained from a commercial source and low molecular weight compounds obtained from the thermal decomposition were analyzed by GC, GPC, IR, $^{13}$ C-NMR and GC-MS. The main chain underwent virtually no change by heat application. Polystyrene underwent decomposition below its molding temperature and the major decomposition products were 2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene (trimer), 2,4-diphenyl-1-butene(dimer) and styrene (monomer). Ethylbenzene, propylbenzene, naphthalene, benzaldehyde, biphenyl and 1,3-diphenylpropane were detected as minor products. This paper presents a new method for examining the decomposition of polystyrene at low temperature into volatile low molecular weight compounds.

  • We successfully synthesized the addition-type polynorbonenes (PNB) exhibiting photochromic properties and excellent thermal stability. Three norbornene-based monomers with different azobenzene moiety (R=NO2, H,OCH3) were synthesized by transesterification method. The corresponding PNB copolymers were synthesized by transition metal-catalyzed addition polymerization method, and characterized by GPC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, NMR, and thermal analysis. For comparison of the photochromic properties depending on the rigidity of polymer backbone, we prepared the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) copolymer with the corresponding azobenzene moiety. We investigated the photoisomerization behavior by means of optical muitichannel analyzer with Xe lamp as well as real-time UV-Vis spectroscopy with high-pressure mercury lamp. Among three PNB copolymers, a polymer with azobenzene (R=H) was the most adaptable for observation of photoisomerization behavior. It was found that the rate of photoisomerization and relaxation depended on the structure of azobenzene chromophore, rather than that of polymer backbone.

  • PTMSP/PDMS-PEI composite membrane was prepared by solution casting method. To investigate the characteristics of this membrane, the analytical methods such as FT-IR, $^1$H-NMR, DSC, TGA, GPC, and SEM have been utilized. The number-average((equation omitted)) and weight-average((equation omitted)) molecular weight of PTMSP/PDMS copolymer were 501,516 and 675,560 respectively. The separation of the gas mixture($H_2$/$N_2$) through the composite membrane was studied as a function of pressure. The separation factor($\alpha$, $\beta$, (equation omitted)) of the composite membrane used in this work increased as the pressure of permeation cell increased. The real separation factor($\alpha$), head separation factor($\beta$), and tail separation factor ((equation omitted)) of PTMSP/PDMS-PEI composite membrane were 21.50, 49.14 and 1.84 respectively at $\Delta$P 345.55 kPa and $25^{\circ}C$.
