Spatiotemporal Visualization of Unit Price Data of Highway Projects

  • The unit price contracting is the standard contracting method for highway projects in the U.S. As a result, state highway agencies have collected a large amount of historical bid data that they can use to determine engineer's estimates for future projects. The estimator must carefully consider various characteristics of a new project such as its location to determine an engineer's estimate as accurate as possible before bid letting. Higher cost estimates can result in the loss of the available budget and lower cost estimates may lead to deferral and delay of projects. The study uses the historical bid data obtained from Iowa Department of Transportation and develops a Geographic Information System (GIS) tool to visually show the variation of unit prices over the map using a spatial interpolation technique. The interpolation map can be used to estimate the unit price of the item at any location across Iowa. This noble method allows the estimator to effectively and fully utilize the historical bid data in a very time efficient manner and determine more accurate cost estimation.

  • Seoul metropolitan government has produced fundamental digital map products and developed various GIS applications for years according to the GIS implementation plan established in 1995. However, the city's recent organization restructuring and prioritized large scale database construction projects for unemployed workers have changed the original GIS implementation schedule. The information strategy plan for the Seoul metropolitan government that represents development and use of common organization -wide database and seeks for providing high quality information services for citizens also require reestablishing the city's GIS implementation strategy. This paper discusses a new implementation strategy and suggests conceptual system architecture for the Seoul metropolitan government's GIS in order to implement a comprehensive urban information system(UIS) based on contemporary GIS technologies.

  • In this paper we present a data migration method for developing GIS-based Fisheries Resources Information Systems after considering standardization of existing methods and analyzing characteristics of such systems. First, a strategy for data migration is defined. Second, a iterative process to build a spatial database is planned. Third, the process is executed to make database transformations and basic data are converted into real GIS data. Finally, developers and users cross-check data correctness. As a result of our research, we suggest a data migration method for GIS data and confirm its usefulness by applying it to real projects.

  • This study analyzes interrelationship with air pollution quality and land use patterns using GIS. The relationship can be obtained via three steps: (1) making out air pollution map from air pollution information of study area, (2) dividing land use patterns into residential area, commercial area, industrial area, traffic concentrated area, and non-polluted area, and (3) spatial overlaying analysis of GIS. Moreover, through analyzing air pollution quality by land use patterns, pollution sources can be identified. The results also coincide with the characteristics of conventional air pollution finding. More detailed analyses using articulated on site air pollution quality measurement databases are needed to correctly identify the pollution sources through finding interrelationship with land use patterns and air pollution Quality using GIS. The developed method can help trace the path of pollution sources and plan urban land use projects.

  • The landslide risk assessment process consists of hazard risk assessment and vulnerability analysis. landslide hazard risk is location dependent. Therefore, maps and spatial technologies such as GIS are very important components of the risk assessment process. This paper discusses the advantages of using GIS technology in the risk assessment process and illustrates the benefits through case studies of live projects undertaken. The goal of this study is to generate a map of landslide vulnerability map by analysis of static natural factors with GIS. A simple and efficient algorithm is proposed to generate a landslide potentialities map from DEM and existing maps. The categories of controlling factors for landslides, aspect of slope, soil, vegetation are defined. The weight values for landslide potentialities are calculated from AHP method. Slope and slope-direction are extracted from DEM, and soil informations are extracted from digital soil map. Also, vegetation informations are extracted from digital vegetation map. Finally, as overlaying, landslide potentialities map is made out, and it is verified with landslide place.

  • ArcView and water network models have been integrated to develop the water network modeling system based upon GIS. To develop this system, pre, main, and post processing systems are required. GIS programming technique was adopted by using the ArcView's script language Avenue. The input data of models have been prepared by using the AutoCAD Map3D through the conversion of modeling input data to GIS data for A city. The modeling has been implemented by using EPANET, WaterCAD, InfoWorks. To develop the post processing system, the modeling results of the water network models have been analyzed by using GIS. During the application process of the developed system to B city with 300,000 population, main problems were found in the constructed GIS DB of that city. Thus, pilot study area of B city has been constructed, and pre-, main, and post-processing techniques were invented based upon GIS. Finally, the problems related to waterworks GIS projects in Korea were discussed and solutions were suggested.

  • Korean Land Spatialization Program (KLSP) is an R&D program of the National GIS Project for developing ubiquitous GIS technologies under the control of the M inistry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (M LTM). The first program of the KLSP, which lasts from 2006 to 2012, initiated with $132 million of national funds and $42 million of private matching funds. Aiming to develop the 'Innovation of GIS technology for ubiquitous Korean land', the KLSP consists of five core research projects and one research coordination project to practically utilize and commercialize the results of core research projects. The Korean Land Spatialization Group (KLSG) is planning the KLSP Test-Bed for testing, integrating, and exhibiting the KLSP's outcomes. About 40% of the outcomes are related products to geo-sensor and wireless sensor network (W SN). Thus, interoperable, scalable and web accessible frameworks like an OGC SWE (Open Geospatial Consortium Sensor Web Enablement) are mandatory because some of the products must be connected to each other in a KLSG Test-Bed. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the KLSP Test-Bed and the SWE SOS (Sensor Observation Service) prototype, which is developed for interoperable geo-sensor networks of the KLSP.

Development of Roadside Facility Management System with Video GIS Technology

  • In this paper, we suggest a new spatial information system called video GIS where video is used for spatial data construction and is integrated with map. We develop a prototype system of video GIS and apply it to roadside facility management. The main functions supported by the suggested system are data collection, coordinate calculation and conversion, data construction, analysis, searching, and browsing. The stereo images and corresponding position data are collected by a vehicle named 4S-Van that has GPS, IMU, and cameras. The 3-D coordinates of the objects in the images, such as road sign, signal lamp, and building, can be calculated and constructed from the collected data. The spatial objects are displayed on both image and map, and can be searched and browsed, which enables visual and realistic browsing and management of spatial objects. Compared to conventional field survey used in roadside facility management, the method enables faster, easier, and more efficient construction of spatial data. The suggested video GIS can be applied not only to roadside facility management but also to many similar projects of central or local governments that are related to GIS.

  • The purpose of this paper is to search for the construction of UDS(Urban Diagnosis System) which can be effectively applied to selecting or classifying the districts for carving out projects of urban planning based on urban geographic information. In order to promote projects of urban planning, it is essential that selecting or classifying the urban districts should be precisely diagnosed according to the respective blocks. Objective measuring standards are needed for this, and the UDS can be applied to analyzing these standards according to the levels. With these in mind, this paper will consider the present states of Korea and the established states of developed countries. Besides, the interest of this paper is to seek the ways of utilizing GIS most effectively in the urban planning areas and application methods. Also, it will find the ways of applying UDS extensively to selecting or classifying districts far the purpose of carrying out urban planning projects actually in the case areas.

  • Recently, the government has improvement projects of dangerous road for the site that has very high accident rate due to bad geometric structures of the road. Although, route selecting of the road is a basic and important process, but the process of route selecting must consider the technical, safety and environment factor together. Also, the technology for the 3-dimensional terrain model can be used as an important factor in planning and designing for selecting alternative route projects. In the course of experimenting with the 3-dimensional topography generated by the combination of the digital map and drawing of route, the technology as been developed to offer the multi-dimensional access to the potential construction sites from the nearby main roads. This 3-dimensional digital elevation model has made it possible to make various terrain analysis base on GIS, which provides real-time virtual access to the designated construction sites for development planning and construction projects. Therefore, this study presents a reasonable plan for route selecting from some alternative routes through subjective evaluation and classify the methods linked basic design of road construction.
