For the production of potent chitinolytic enzyme from bacteria, screening was carried out. Of 100 samples from soil, fresh water and sea water collected from the Kyung-gi area, 7 strains of chitinolytic bacteria were isolated. Among them, Aeromonas hydrophila 5-3K showed the highest chitinolytic activity. Culture conditions of Aeromonas hydrophila for the production of chitinolytic enzyme were inverstigated and lytic enzyme was fractionated by the use of ammonium sulfate and Sephadex G-100. Maximum production of chitinolytic enzyme was obtained at pH 7.0 and 30$\circ$C with chitin concentration between 0.2% and 1.0%. Conditions for the enzyme production were optimized including fermentor cultivation. The chitinolytic system of Aeromonas hydrophila 5-3K was composed of two enzymes, chitinase and chitobiase.
In this study, to obtain the basic data for the optimum moisture control system, moisture adsorption characteristics, adsorption isotherms models for water and surface physical characteristics of burley and flue-cured tobacco were investigated. By the hypothesis' the phenomenon of moisture adsorption of tobacco is the same as the first order reaction, the wetting constant (k) and equilibrium moisture content were obtained. And activation energy, frequency factors were also calculated by applying its data to Arrhenius equation. The Kamei's empirical formula of moisture adsorption isotherms showed the best agreement with the experimental data and its correlation coefficient (r) was 0.997. It can be seen that specific surface area of burley is 157 m2/g, that of flue-cured is 152 m2/g, -△H1 of adsorbed monolayer is 45,972 J/mol, 45,486 J/mol, respectively, and the condensation heat (40,595 J/mol) being caught in adsorbed multilayer is less than that of monolayer.
Fusing press m/c is used for heating and pressing the specimens that are fed into between the two moving belts. Therefore the belt movement, belt temperature, and the pressure between belts must be kept constant. Especially, the belts should move in a limited operation range. When the belts run far out of the operation point, the machine has to be stopped, which results in a product defect because the fusing conditions, e.g., temperature and pressure, change during the transient process time period. It is important to avoid the belt stopping by maintaining the belt movement in a limited range. This study reports about the movement of the endless fusing belt in a long-span roller fusing m/c. The belt position changes as the 1st-order system does; if the roller axes are slanting each other with a certain angle, the belt running around the two rolls shows a dynamic behavior with the time that deviates fastly at the beginning from the initial condion and slows down. Then it reaches at a final position. The skewer the axes, the greater the position change. The inital change rate of the belt becomes large as the skewness of the axes between the two rollers increases.

We collected crucians (Carassius auratus) and leopard frogs(Rana pipiens) along the Nakdong River and the basin area at five locations from Koomi to Nakdong-estuary. The muscular tissue were separated and a GC-MSD system was used for quantification of PCBs. The 62 PCB congeners which represent total PCB levels were selected as analytes. We determined concentrations of PCBs and studied distribution characteristics by individual congeners and homologs. In the crucian, 24 congeners were detected and total PCB levels ranged from 0.74 to 5.41 ng/g wet weight. In the leopard frog, however, only 2 congeners were detected from Nakdong estuary only. The PCB level was 0.24 ng/g wet weight, around 22 times lower than the crucians. The PCB 153 showed the highest concentrations in the congeners and penta- and hexa-CBs showed the strong predominance which accounted for 78% of the total PCBs.
BACKGROUD: ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$- Endosulfan isomers of endosulfan, an endocrine disrupting chemical, are widely used cyclodiene organochlorine pesticide in worldwide, and it has widespread application in agriculture and can contaminate river-system as runoff from soil or aerial deposition METHOD AND RESULTS: In this study, an attempt was made to isolate an endosulfan degrading fungus from endosulfan-polluted agricultural soil. Through repetitive enrichment and successive subculture in media containing endosulfan and its metabolites as the sole carbon source, a fungus designated KEF-1 was isolated. Based on phylogenetic analysis, strain KEF-1 was assigned to the genus Eutypella. Also, the ITS (internal transcribed spacer) sequences of KEF-1 were submitted to GenBank under accession number EF581006. In potato dextrose broth containing 8 ${\mu}g$/mL endosulfan, strain KEF-1 completely degraded the endosulfanin 12 days. CONCLUSION: These results suggested that Eutypella sp. KEF-1 has potential as a biocatalyst for endosulfan bioremediation

In this study, we investigated the growth of striped mullet (Mugil cephalus), Yesso scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) and kelp (Saccharina japonica) farmed under the IMTA (integrated multi-trophic aquaculture) system developed by national institute of fisheries science (NIFS). The farmed striped mullets grew from an initial length and weight of $152.5{\pm}12.1mm$ and $41.6{\pm}7.8g$ in October 2013 to $154.2{\pm}5.6mm$ and $47.5{\pm}8.6g$ in November, $160.2{\pm}8.7mm$ and $55.9{\pm}9.1g$ in December and $168.4{\pm}9.6mm$ and $58.4{\pm}8.7g$ in January. The fish continued to grow and reached $190.2{\pm}9.4mm$ in length and $87.5{\pm}8.9g$ in weight in April and $256.4{\pm}9.7mm$ and $156.7{\pm}6.7g$ in October 2014. The daily growth rate (DGR) for total fish length was 0.015~0.1 mm/day during the periods of fast growth and attained 0.038~0.1 mm/day during February ~ March. The kelp grew from an initial blade length and wet weight of $1.19{\pm}0.2cm$ and $0.0028{\pm}0.0012g$ in January 2014 to $3.3{\pm}0.8cm$ and $2.5{\pm}0.9g$ in February and $126.5{\pm}11.6cm$ and $107.4{\pm}22.6g$ in March, after which, erosion occurred and slowed the growth. The DGRs for kelp length ranged 0.03~1.9 mm/day in January 2014 and increased to 0.88~1.9 mm/day during March~April. Increasing water temperatures beginning in April lowered the DGR to 0.03 mm/day. Yesso scallops grew from an initial shell length, shell height and wet weight of $11.83{\pm}0.6mm$, $12.68{\pm}0.7mm$ and in September 2013 to $19.9{\pm}2.5mm$, $20.8{\pm}2.6mm$ and $0.9{\pm}0.04g$ in November 2013. They continued to grow to $45.91{\pm}0.71mm$ in shell length, $42.55{\pm}0.8mm$ in shell height and $12.7{\pm}1.3g$ in wet weight by May 2014 and $60.2{\pm}2.51mm$, $554.6{\pm}2.61mm$ and $24{\pm}2.70g$ by October 2014. The DGRs for shell length of Yesso scallop ranged from 0.02 to 0.256 mm/day with higher values of 0.256~0.27 mm/day during November~December 2013 and March~April 2014.

Exposure of cells to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation can induce production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cellular components. In addition, these agents can stimulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and decrease collagen synthesis in human skin cells. In this study, we examined the anti-photoaging effects of extracts of Tetraselmis suecica (W-TS). W-TS showed the strongest scavenging activity against 2,2-difenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and peroxyl radicals, followed by superoxide anions from the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system. We observed that the levels of both intracellular ROS and lipid peroxidation significantly increased in UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblast cells. Furthermore, the activities of enzymatic antioxidants (e.g., superoxide dismutase) and the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants (e.g., glutathione) significantly decreased in cells. However, W-TS pretreatment, at the maximum tested concentration, significantly decreased intracellular ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and increased superoxide dismutase and glutathione levels in the cells. At this same concentration, W-TS did not show cytotoxicity. Type 1 procollagen and MMP-1 released were quantified using RT-PCR techniques. The results showed that W-TS protected type 1 procollagen against UVB-induced depletion in fibroblast cells in a dose-dependent manner via inhibition of UVB-induced MMP-1. Taken together, the results of the study suggest that W-TS effectively inhibits UVB-induced photoaging in skin fibroblasts by its strong anti-oxidant ability.

C3GHi, a novel black rice variety developed by conventional breeding has more high contents of cyanidine-3-glucoside (C3G) and a more strong antioxidant than normal black rice. In this study, we investigate the antioxidative potential and anti-diabetic activity of C3GHi and extract of it for the purpose of development of functional materials or replacement meal for diabetic patients. Using in vitro antioxidative activity assay system such as DPPH radical quenching assay, superoxide anion radical scavenging assay, inhibition of lipid peroxidation and DNA breakage assay, C3GHi extract was observed to have more high antioxidative activity than normal black rice breed. The glycemic index of a freeze dried powder of C3GHi brown rice showed $43.7\pm18.8$, which belonged to low GI food (GI of 55 or less). Using in vivo diabetic model such as db/db mice model and streptozotocininduced diabetic model, C3GHi rice extract decrease blood glucose level and inhibit oxidative stress in blood. From the results, we think that the C3GHi varieties have a potential for the functional materials or ingredient of meal replacement for diabetic patients.

Fermentation studies were conducted in batch and continuous flow cell-recycle reactors with food by-products as substrates. The genus Propionibacterium acidipropionici ATCC 4965 was utilized in the production of organic acids. Good performance was achieved in the batch fermentation using hydrol as a carbon source and corn steep liquor (CSL) as nitrogen and vitamin sources. Product yields and productivity based on maximum values were 0.80 g total acids/g glucose and 0.26 g total acids/L/h, respectively, when $3\%$, (w/v) of hydrol and $2.5\%$, (w/v) of CSL were utilized. Continuous fermentation with cell-recycling system using the optimum amounts of substrates resulted in dramatic increase in cell concentration (X) and maximum productivity (P). Compared to the batch fermentation, X and P were increased by as much as 21 and 13 times, respectively, at the dilution ratio of $0.2\;hr^{-1}$, indicating that cell recycling fermentation of food by-products provides valuable means for the mass production of organic acids as well as utilizing cell mass as good nutrient resources.
