  • Objectives: There were only small studies about the difference of the quality of life depending on blood stasis. We investigated that the blood stasis made the differences of quality of life. Methods: We recruited the participants stratified according to age and gender. The participants were assessed independently by two Korean medicine doctors more than 7 years of clinical experiences whether or not with blood stasis. And they responded at the questionnaire associated with blood stasis and SF-36. The analysis was done with IBM SPSS Statistics (ver. 21). Results: Total 101 participants were checked for with/without blood stasis. 40 participants were accord in the diagnosis with blood stasis by two doctors. Two researchers coincided in diagnosis with non-blood stasis in 42 participants. 19 participants showed the discrepancy between the assessment of blood stasis and they were classified as non-blood stasis. The mean age in group of blood stasis was $44.07{\pm}11.65$, it was not shown the significant difference comparing non-blood stasis group. The subscale of physical function (PF), role-physical (RP), bodily pain (BP), general health (GH), vitality (VT), mental health (MH) and role emotional (RE) in SF-36 were significantly low in the group of blood stasis. Blood test including biochemistry, fibrinogen, prothrombin time and D-dimer was not in abnormal range according to blood stasis without CRP. Conclusions: The patients that diagnosed of blood stasis showed the bad physical health status, and partially bad mental health. It is necessary to investigate whether Korean traditional treatment for blood stasis would be made improvement for quality of life. Moreover, the standardization of diagnosis on blood stasis would be needed.

  • Laron syndrome was first described by Dr. Laron. Administration of exogenous growth hormone failed to stimulate insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) production which was related to postnatal growth, because these patients lacked receptors in the liver for this hormone. The diagnosis of this syndrome is based on the typical features of GH resistance such as normal or elevated serum GH, low serum IGF-I, and impaired IGF-I response to hGH. Laron syndrome patients showed characteristically severe postnatal growth failure and markedly reduced adult height. This report describes the oral and maxillofacial manifestations of children associated with Laron syndrome. Children with Laron syndrome have several dental and skeletal irregularities. Relatively little is known of the direct effect of Laron syndrome on dental development. Further research should be needed.

  • An experimental investigation is conducted here to study the effects of applying frictional sliding fuses (FSF) in concrete infilled steel frames. Firstly, the influences of some parameters on the behavior of the sliding fuse are studied: Methods of adjusting the FSF for a certain sliding strength are explained and influences of time duration, welding and corrosion are investigated as well. Based on the results, time duration does not significantly affect the FSF, however influences of welding and corrosion of the constitutive plates are substantial. Then, the results of testing two 1/3 scale single-storey single-bay concrete infilled steel frames having FSF are presented. The specimens were similar, except for different regulations of their fuses, tested by displacement controlled cyclic loading. The results demonstrate that applying FSF improves infill behaviors in both perpendicular directions. The infilled frames with FSF have more appropriate hysteresis cycles, higher ductility, much lower deteriorations in strength and stiffness in comparison with regular ones. Consequently, the infills, provided with FSF, can be regarded as an engineered element, however, special consideration should be taken into the affecting parameters of their fuses.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting the final adult height and total height gain in idiopathic and organic growth hormone deficient(GHD) children after growth hormone(GH) treatment. Methods : Thirteen patients with idiopathic GHD and 22 patients with organic GHD who had been treated with GH and attained adult final height were included in this study. Factors which could affect the final adult height(FAH) and total height gain, were evaluated. Results : Height SDS(standard deviation score) at initial GH treatment in idiopathic GHD was significantly shorter than that in organic GHD($-4.13{\pm}1.28$ vs $-1.66{\pm}1.06$, P<0.001). Growth velocity during the first year of GH treatment was $9.69{\pm}3.19cm$(idiopathic GHD) and $7.87{\pm}3.65cm$(organic GHD). Height(SDS) at puberty in organic GHD was significantly greater than in idiopathic GHD ($-0.55{\pm}1.25$ vs $-2.28{\pm}0.95$, P<0.001). Final adult height(SDS) was significantly greater in organic GHD than in idiopathic GHD($0.22{\pm}1.06$ vs $-1.44{\pm}0.84$, P<0.001). In idiopathic GHD, total height gain (SDS) was most significantly correlated with midparental height minus initial height(MPH-IH)(SDS) (r=0.886, P<0.001). Total height gain(SDS) was more significantly correlated with MPH-IH(SDS) and prepubertal height gain(SDS) in idiopathic GHD(r=0.640, P=0.01, r=0.801, P<0.001). Conclusion : Final adult height was greater in organic GHD than in idiopathic GHD patients. While total height gain(SDS) was more pronounced in children with lower initial height compared to MPH, absolute final adult height was influenced by height at puberty. To improve the final adult height in children with GHD, height at onset of puberty must be increased by early diagnosis and continuous treatment with optimal doses of GH. There results should be evaluated with more patients.

  • To analyze genetic effects on milk production traits, 164 unrelated Italian Jersey cows reared in 15 farms located in Southern Italy were characterized at the growth hormone locus. Using a Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism protocol all three possible genotypes for the Leucine/Valine polymorphism were identified even if in the considered population the number of homozygous animals (Leucine/Leucine = 36; Valine/Valine = 28) was smaller than Leucine/Valine (n = 100) cows; the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was verified. Statistical analysis showed that daily milk yield in the Leucine/Leucine genotype was higher (p<0.01) than in Leucine/Valine (22.76 kg vs. 16.96 kg ); cows with Leucine/Valine genotype differed significantly from Leucine/Leucine and Valine/Valine genotypes particularly in fat (4.95% vs. 4.13% and 4.82%, respectively) and protein content (4.00% vs. 3.47% and 3.79%, respectively). No significant effect on lactation length was observed.

  • TRH (Thvrotropin-Releasing Hormone) known to regulate the transcription of the TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormones gene in pituitary cells, but little is understood about the mechanism(sl involved. re present study was attempted to elucidate the role of Ca2+ movement through the voltage-gated channels in the regulation of TSH gene transcription. The c-fos is one of immediate early genes and used as model system for the investigation of signaling pathwavs involved in various stimuli. The changes of c-fos mRNA levels were determined after treatment of various agents using Northern and slot hybridization analysis. The c-fos mRNA was rapidly and transiently induced by TRH (about 3-fold) in GH3 cells and this induction was repressed by calcium chelating agent (EGTA), calcium channel blocker (verapamil) anti protein kinase C inhibitor (aminoacridine). The abilities of forskolin (adenvlate cvclase activators, PMA (protein kinase C activator), and A23187 (calcium ionophore) to affect c-ios gene transcription, either alone or in combination with TRH were tested in the same cells. All of them significantly increased the level of c-fos mRUA. However, no additive relationship was observed in all combined treatments except forskolin. These results suggest that TRH action on the c-fos gene activation is mediated by calcium influx as well as through protein kinase C.

  • As the size of a wind turbine increases, the mechanical structure has to have an increasing mechanical stiffness that is sufficient to withstand mechanical fatigue loads over a lifespan of more than 20 years. However, this leads to a heavier mechanical design, which means a high material cost during wind turbine manufacturing. Therefore, lightweight design of a wind turbine is an important design constraint. Usually, a lightweight mechanical structure has low damping. Therefore, if it is subjected to a disturbance, it will oscillate continuously. This study deals with the active damping control of a wind turbine tower. An algorithm that mitigates the mechanical loads of a wind turbine tower is introduced. The effectiveness of this algorithm is verified through a numerical simulation using GH Bladed, which is a commercial aero-elastic code for wind turbines.

  • This study examined the growth effects of yeast hydrolysate (YH) and a traditional Korean herbal mixture (HM, a mixture of safflower seed and gasiogapi extract). Three-week old male SD rats were divided into the following five groups: negative control (saline), positive control (foremilk 0.5 g/kg/day), YH (YH 0.5 g/kg/day), HM (HM 0.2 g/kg/day), and YH+HM (YH 0.5 g/kg/day and HM 0.2 g/kg/day). Tibia bone length was 9.22 mm in the normal control rats, while both the YH and YH+HM groups had significantly longer tibia bones than the control rats (9.75 mm and 10.46 mm, respectively). The proximal epiphyses of YH, HM, and YH+HM measured 0.75, 0.70, and 0.75 mm, respectively, while the length in the control group was 0.50 mm. Plasma insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) level was slightly higher in the YH group (1.36 mg/mL) than in the control rats (1.29 mg/mL), but the difference was not significant. Plasma IGF-1 level was significantly increased in the HM (1.49 mg/mL) and YH+HM (1.53 mg/mL) groups compared to the control group (1.29 mg/mL). Growth hormone (GH) levels in YH (17.45 ng/mL), HM (15.49 ng/mL), and YH+HM (16.07 ng/mL) were significantly different compared to the control group (3.63 ng/mL).
