The changes in the resistance to chloride ingress of concrete using a ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) according to curing conditions were examined. The curing conditions were divided in air-dry curing and under-water curing. Three concrete mixures with the GGBFS replacement ratio of 0%(control), 30%, and 60% were prepared. For tests, evaluations of concrete compressive strength, and chloride ion diffusion coefficient were performed. As the GGBFS replacement ratio increased, the concrete compressive strength of the in air-dry cured specimens decreased compared to under-water cured specimens. When the chloride ion diffusion coefficient was measured, the chloride ion diffusion coefficient decreased as the GGBFS replacement ratio increased. However, the diffusion coefficient of the in air-dry cured specimen was increased up to 111% compared with the under-water cured specimen.

The objective of this study is to investigate the self-healing properties of ternary blended cement(TBC) paste made with OPC, GGBFS and FA. The influence of OPC-GGBFS-FA on the self-healing ability of ternary blended cement paste was researched by ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV) measurement. The TBC paste with GGBFS-FA replacement ratios of 20%, 40% and 60% were prepared having a constant water-cementitious materials ratios os 0.5. The research focuses on behavior after 28days(after loading). Four-point bending tests are used to pre-cracked the prismatic specimens at 28days. For specimens (uncracked and cracked) submerged in tap-water and sea-water until 60days. According to the experimental results, the TBC paste system has self-healing ability increased when the fraction of GGBFS increased. Because GGBFS and FA continues to hydrate after 28days, it is likely that hydrated products from GGBFS and FA may modify microstructures, seal these cracks. From these results, it is clear that the crack in all samples experience self-healing and that this occurs mostly in the first 30days of submerging. Futhermore, most of the healing for both specimens of submerged in sea-water and tap-water occurred during the first 30days. Sea-water submerged specimens healed cracks as fast as those in tap-water. Differences in healing effects of submerged in sea-water and tap-water may be attributed to the presence of specific sea-water ions. Therefore, self-healing effects considered age-effects was more strong effect occurred mostly in the first 30days, and then gradually weaken.
The paper presented investigates the effects of kaolinite on strength properties of alkali-activated multi-component cement. The binders of this study was blended of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF) and kaolinite (KA). In this study, the specimens of combination of 20%~70% GGBFS, 10%~60% FA, 10% SF (constant ratio) and 10%~50% KA binder were used for strength properties tests. The water/binder ratio was 0.5. The binders (GGBFS + FA + SF + KA) was activated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) was 10% by total binder weight (10% NaOH + 10% $Na_2SiO_3$). The research carried out is on the compressive strength, water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The compressive strength decreased as the contents of KA increase. One of the major reason for this is the low reactivity of KA compared with other raw materials used as precursors such as GGBFS or FA. The presence of remaining KA indicates that the initially used quantity has not fully reacted during hydration. Moreover, the results have indicated that increased of KA contents decreased UPV under all experimental conditions. The drying shrinkage and water absorption increased as the content of KA increase. Test result clearly showed that the strength development of multi-component blended cement were significantly dependent on the content of KA and GGBFS.
This study investigated the fluidity, heat of hydration, setting time, strength development, and characteristics of hydration and pozzolanic reactions of high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBFS) blended cement pasts with the water-to-binder ratio of 20% by experiments, and analyzed the effects of the replacement ratio and fineness of GGBFS on the hydration and pozzolanic reaction. The results show that, in the high-strength mixtures with low water-to-binder ratio, the initial hydration is accelerated due to the "dilution effect" which means that the free water to react with cement increases by the replacement of cement by GGBFS, and thus, strengths at from 3 to 28 days were higher than those of plain mixtures with ordinary Portland cement only. Whereas it was found that the long term strength development is limited because the hydration reaction rates rapidly decreases with ages and the degree of pozzolanic reaction is lowered due to insufficient supply of calcium hydroxide according to large replacement of cement by GGBFS. Also, the GGBFS with higher fineness absorbs more free water, and thus it decreases the fluidity, the degree of hydration, and strength. These results are different with those of normal strength concrete, and therefore, should be verified for concrete mixtures. Also, to develop the high-strength concrete with high-volume of GGBFS, the future research to enhance the long-term strength development is needed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the physical properties and self-healing effects of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars(EMMs) using ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS). The EMMs with GGBFS were prepared with various polymer-binder ratios and GGBFS contents, and tested for strengths, adhesion in tension, water permeation and self-healing effects. The conclusions obtained from the test results are summarized as follows. The compressive strength of the EMMs with GGBFS is reduced with increasing polymer-binder ratios because of reduction of the degree of hardening in the EMMs, and is somewhat inferior to that of unmodified mortars. In the flexural and tensile strengths, the flexural strength of the EMMs is almost constant with increasing polymer-binder ratios. However, the tensile strength of the EMMs is gradually increased with increasing polymer-binder ratios. Regardless of the GGBFS contents, the adhesion in tension of the EMMs increases sharply with increasing polymer-binder ratios. The water permeation of the EMMs is remarkably reduced with increasing polymer-binder ratios and GGBFS contents. The self-healing effect of the hardener-free EMMs with GGBFS is improved with increasing water immersion period at a GGBFS content of 20%.
Recently, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) has been increasingly used as additive for concrete. Many researchers reported that concrete using GGBFS had a better resistance under severe environments, such as marine or sulfate-rich soils, than Portland type cement concrete. The aim, therefore, of this study is to evaluate on the effectiveness of concrete using GGBFS when the concrete exposes to sulfate-rich environment. The detailed items for experiments show 2 series consisted of sulfate immersion test with mortar and sulfate diffusion test with concrete. The sulfate immersion test was performed for 400 days and contained reduction of compressive strength, length change and XRD analysis. For sulfate diffusion test, sulfate ions diffusivity was calculated on tile consideration of electrochemical theory by the diffusion cell test. As the results of this study, it was found that the concrete using GGBFS as additive was superior to portland type cement concrete. Consequently, the use of concrete with GGBFS for recycling may expect the durable and economical benefits.

γ-dicalcium silicate (γ-C2S) is characterized by its strong carbonation reactivity and has the prospect to be utilized as a building material with the added benefit of CO2 capture. This paper aims to point out the impact of γ-C2S on the microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties of GGBFS paste, and mortar samples. Three curing conditions including un-carbonation, natural carbonation, and accelerated carbonation were applied to the research. Besides, hydration products after the carbonation process are also detected. What's more, the carbonation treatment method also meets the requirement of capture more greenhouse gas and recycles the waste products of metallurgy.
Concrete, as a porous media, has permeability and it is considered as a major parameter for durability evaluation. Cold joint caused by delayed placing of concrete accelerates water permeation and intrusion of harmful ions. In the paper, concrete specimens containing GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) and OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) are prepared with cold joint section, and water permeability and water flow at the age of 91 days are measured for 2 weeks. Sound concrete with GGBFS shows decreased permeability to 89% for sound concrete with OPC and 0.86 of decreasing ratio is evaluated in GGBFS concrete with cold joint. Through WPT (Water Penetration Test), the effects of mineral admixture and cold joint on water permeability are evaluated, and variation in water behavior via cold joint is analyzed through probabilistic method as well.

The critical chloride content of rebar embedded in concrete was experimentally evaluated according to the admixture replacement ratio and admixture type. Four types of reinforced concrete were mixed OPC 100%, OPC 70% + GGBFS 30%, OPC 40% + GGBFS 60%, and OPC 40% + GGBFS 40% + FA 20%. NaCl solution was supplied to the specimens, and the open circuit potential of the embedded rebar was monitored. The specimens determined to initiate corrosion were cut at intervals of 5mm from the NaCl solution supply surface and conducted to chlorine ion profile. Corrosion initiation time of rebar embedded in concrete was delayed as the admixture replacement ratio increased. Looking at the critical chloride content of the types of reinforced concrete, it was highest in OPC 1.46kg/㎥, followed in order by S30 0.98kg/㎥, TBC 0.74kg/㎥, and S60 0.71kg/㎥.

The aim of this investigation is to prepare geopolymer resin by alkali activation of ceramic waste (AACW) with different sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and liquid sodium silicate (LSS) concentrations. In order to prepare geopolymer cement, AACW was replaced by 10 and 30 % by weight (wt.,) of concrete waste (CoW) as well as 10 and 30 wt., % ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS). The results showed that, the compressive strength of AACW increases with the increase of activator content up to 15:15 wt., % NaOH: LSS. All AACW hardened specimens activated by 3:3 (MC6), 6:6 (MC12), 12:12 (MC24) and 15:15 wt., % (MC30) NaOH: LSS destroyed when cured in water for 24h. The MC18 mix showed higher resistivity to water curing. The results also showed that, the replacement of AACW containing 9:9 wt., % NaOH: LSS (MC18) by 10 (MCCo10) and 30 (MCCo30) wt., % CoWdecreased the compressive strength at all ages of curing. In contrast, the MCCo10 mix showed the lower chemically combined water content compared to MC18 mix. The MCCo30 mix showed the higher chemically combined water content compared to MC18 and MCCo10 mixes. The compressive strength and chemically combined water of all AACWmixes containing GGBFS (MCS10 and MCS30) were higher than those of AACWwith no GGBFS (MC18). As the amount of GGBFS content increases the chemically combined water increases. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) proved that as the amount of CoWcontent increases, the degree of crystallinity increases. Conversely, the replacement of AACW by GGBFS leads to increase the amorphiticity character. The infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the higher reactivity of GGBFS compared to CoW as a result of successive hydration products formation, enhancing the compaction of microstructure as observed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
