Uniaxial tension test of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bar reinforced concrete prisms was performed. The objective was to investigate the adequate cover thickness of the GFRP rebars. The tension stiffening effect of GFRP bar reinforced concrete was also studied. The test variables included rebar types (conventional steel rebar and two different GFRP rebars) and cover thicknesses (five different cover thicknesses ranging between 1-3db). Normal strength concrete was used. Cracking patterns on concrete surface and cracking loads were careful1y observed during the direct tensile test. The test results indicated that the adequate cover thickness of the GFRP rebars may even be larger than that of the steel rebars and that the cover thickness of 2db commonly specified for the GFRP rebars may not be large enough. The tension stiffening effect of the GFRP rebars was also quantified and documented from the test results.

This paper presents the durability characteristics of commercially available CFRP rebars under various environmental conditions. Two types of GFRP rebars were tested by using an accelerated aging method. A total of 264 rebar specimens were conditioned up to 132 days in the moisture, chloride. alkaline, and freeze-thaw environmental conditions. The durability characteristics of conditioned rebars were obtained by comparing the tensile strength, horizontal shear strength, and elastic modulus between the unconditioned and conditioned GFRP rebars. The test results indicated that the mechanical properties of GFRP were significantly reduced after conditioning. Long-term degradation of GFRP rebars was also estimated using the results of a short-term durability test.

This research presents the experimental and theoretical evaluations on circular steel-fiber-reinforced-concrete (SFRC) columns reinforced by glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) rebar under the axial compressive loading. Test programs were designed to investigate and compare the effect of different parameters on the structural behavior of columns by performing tests. Theses variables included conventional concrete (CC), fiber concrete (FC), steel/GFRP longitudinal rebars, and transversal rebars configurations. A total of 16 specimens were constructed and categorized into four groups in terms of different rebar-concrete configurations, including GFRP-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (GRCC), GFRP-rebar-reinforced-FC columns (GRFC), steel-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (SRCC) and steel-rebar- reinforced-FC columns (SRFC). Experimental observations displayed that failure modes and cracking patterns of four groups of columns were similar, especially in pre-peak branches of load-deflection curves. Although the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal GFRP rebars was obtained by 17.9% less than the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal steel rebars, the average axial ductility index (DI) of them was gained by 10.2% higher than their counterpart columns. Adding steel fibers (SFs) into concrete led to the increases of 7.7% and 6.7% of the axial peak load and the DI of columns than their counterpart columns with CC. The volumetric ratio had greater efficiency on peak loads and DIs of columns than the type of transversal reinforcement. A simple analytical equation was proposed to predict the axial compressive capacity of columns by considering the axial involvement of longitudinal GFRP rebars, volumetric ratio, and steel spiral/hoop rebar. There was a good correlation between test results and predictions of the proposed equation.

Mechanical properties of GFRP rebars significantly decrease due to high temperature as well as alkalinity of concrete. This study focuses on the long-term reduction of inter-laminar shear strength of pre-damaged GFRP rebars by high temperature. For this investigation, bare GFRP rebar specimens were exposed to $270^{\circ}C$ for 1hour and then immerged in alkali solution for several months and tested in shear. No thermally conditioned specimens were immerged and tested for the comparisons. In results, the reduction of thermally damaged GFRP rebars was greater than that of no thermally damaged ones. Based on the accelerated experimental test data, an polynomial equation is presented for prediction of long-term residual inter-laminar shear strength of GFRP rebars previously damaged by high temperature.
The development length equations of the GFRP rebars are suggested based on the pullout tests performed in this study. A total of 48 pullout and modified pullout tests were completed. Test variables included embedment length (L=10, 15, 20, and $30d_b$), vertical and horizontal installation of the rebars, height of the rebars (H=100 and 300 mm), and cover thickness $(C=2{\sim}5d_b)$. D13 GFRP rebars domestically developed were used in the experimental program. The average of the bond strength of all vertically installed GFRP rebars was 6.39 MPa with a 5% fractile of 4.63 MPa. A basic development length equation was derived that resulted in an equation equivalent to the one proposed in the ACI 440.1R-03. Careful reevaluation of the bond strength using the modified pullout test indicated that a modification of the design equation was necessary so that the basic development length increases by 11%. The top bar effect of the horizontally installed rebars as well as the effect of the cover thickness were determined and included in the set of suggested equations. Since the current equations were derived from testing rebars embedded in relatively low strength concrete $(f_{ck}=20{\sim}24MPa)$, they result in conservative development lengths when applied to bars embedded in higher strength concretes.
In this article, the flexural and shear capacity of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete beams (UHPFRC) using two kinds of rebars, including GFRP and steel rebars, are experimentally investigated. For this purpose, six UHPFRC beams (250 × 300 × 1650 mm) with three reinforcement ratios (ρ) of 0.64, 1.05, and 1.45 were constructed using 2% steel fibers by volume. Half of the specimens were made of UHPFRC reinforced with GFRP rebars, while the other half were reinforced with conventional steel rebars. All specimens were tested to failure in four-point bending. Both the load-deformation at mid-span and the failure pattern were studied. The results showed that utilizing GFRP bars increases the flexural strength of UHPFRC beams in comparison to those made of steel bars, but at the same time, it reduces the post-cracking strain hardening. Furthermore, by increasing the percentage of longitudinal bars, both the post-cracking strain hardening and load-bearing capacity increase. Comparing the experiment results with some of the available equations and provisions cited in the valid design codes reveals that some of the equations to predict the flexural strength of UHPFRC beams reinforced with conventional steel and GFRP bars are reasonably conservative, while Khalil and Tayfur model is un-conservative. This issue makes it essential to modify the presented equations in this research for predicting the flexural strength of UHPFRC beams using GFRP bars.

This paper presents the experimental and numerical evaluations on the circular SFRC columns reinforced GFRP rebars under the axial compressive loading. The test programs were designed to inquire and compare the effects of different parameters on the columns' structural behavior by performing experiments and finite element modeling. The research variables were conventional concrete (CC), fiber concrete (FC), types of longitudinal steel/GFRP rebars, and different configurations of lateral rebars. A total of 16 specimens were manufactured and categorized into four groups based on different rebar-concrete arrangements including GRCC, GRFC, SRCC, and SRFC. Adding steel fibers (SFs) into the concrete, it was essential to modify the concrete damage plastic (CDP) model for FC columns presented in the finite element method (FEM) using ABAQUS 6.14 software. Failure modes of the columns were similar and results of peak loads and corresponding deflections of compression columns showed a suitable agreement in tests and numerical analysis. The behavior of GFRP-RC and steel-RC columns was relatively linear in the pre-peak branch, up to 80-85% of their ultimate axial compressive loads. The axial compressive loads of GRCC and GRFC columns were averagely 80.5% and 83.6% of axial compressive loads of SRCC and SRFC columns. Also, DIs of GRCC and GRFC columns were 7.4% and 12.9% higher than those of SRCC and SRFC columns. Partially, using SFs compensated up to 3.1%, the reduction of the compressive strength of the GFRP-RC columns as compared with the steel-RC columns. The effective parameters on increasing the DIs of columns were higher volumetric ratios (up to 12%), using SFs into concrete (up to 6.6%), and spiral (up to 5.5%). The results depicted that GFRP-RC columns had higher DIs and lower peak loads compared with steel-RC columns.
The main objective of this experimental study is to examine the feasibilities of each testing method with various kinds of grip systems for the analysis of tensile strength of GFRP(glass fiber reinforced polymer) reinforcing bars. Three types of grip systems were examined such as resin-sleeved pipe-type grip proposed by CSA(Canadian Standard Association), frictional resistance type metal grip by ASTM(American Standard for Testing and Materials) and wedge-inserted cone-type grip normally used in prestressing tendons. Also, mechanical properties of GFRP rebars with different surface deformations were investigated for each different type of testing grip used in this study. All testing procedures including specimens preparation, set-up of test equipments and measuring devices were made according to the CSA S806-02 recommendations. From the test results, it was found that the highest tensile strengths of GFRP rebars were observed when tested by resin-sleeved grip system regardless of their different surface deformations. But tensile strengths of GFRP rebars by ASTM grip system are only 10% less than those by CSA grip system. On the other hand, CSA grip is not only difficult to prepare but also not disposable. Therefore, ASTM grip system is recommended as a practical alternative to estimate the tensile strength of GFRP rebars.

The tensile and bond performance of GFRP rebar are different from those of conventional steel reinforcement. It requires some studies on concrete members reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars to apply it to concrete structures. GFRP has some advantages such as high specific strength, low weight, non-corrosive nature, and disadvantage of larger deflection due to the lower modulus of elasticity than that of steel. Bridge deck is a preferred structure to apply FRP rebars due to the increase of flexural capacity by arching action. This paper focuses on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with newly developed GFRP rebars. A total of three real size bridge deck specimens were made and tested. Main variables are the type of reinforcing bar and reinforcement ratio. Static test was performed with the load of DB-24 level until failure. Test results were compared and analyzed with ultimate load, deflection behavior, crack pattern and width.
This study developed and investigated a precast slab track system partially reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars in the transverse direction, which mitigated the loss of track circuit current by reducing magnetic coupling between the rails and steel reinforcements. An electric analysis was conducted and the results of the analysis verified that the GFRP rebars mitigate the reduced current strength produced by electro-magnetic induction. In the study, a three-dimensional finite element method and flexural experiments were used to study the mechanical behavior of the proposed slab track.
