  • This paper presents a weighted fuzzy backward reasoning algorithm for rule-based systems based on weighted fuzzy Petri nets. The fuzzy production rules in the knowledge base of a rule-based system are modeled by weighted fuzzy Petri nets, where the truth values of the propositions appearing in the fuzzy production rules and the certainty factors of the rules are represented by fuzzy numbers. Furthermore, the weights of the propositions appearing in the rules are also represented by fuzzy numbers. The proposed weighted fuzzy backward reasoning generates the backward reasoning path from the goal node to the initial nodes and then evaluates the certainty factor of the goal node. The algorithm we proposed can allow the rule-based systems to perform weighted fuzzy backward reasoning in more flexible and human-like manner.

  • A knowledge-based system with fuzzy production rules is a representation of static knowledge of an expert. On the other hand, a real system such as the stock market is dynamic in nature. Therefore we need a strategy to reflect the dynamic nature of real system when we make inferences with a knowledge-based system. This paper proposes a strategy of dynamic inferencing for a knowledge-based system with fuzzy production rules. The strategy suggested in this paper applies weights of attributes of conditions of a rule in the knowledge-base. A degree of match(DM) between actual input information and a condition of a rule is represented by a value [0,1]. Weights of relative importance of attributes in a rule are obtained by AHP(Analytic Hierarcy Process) method. Then these weights are applied as exponents for the DM, and the DMs in a rule are combined, with MIN operator, into a single DM for the rule. In this way, overall DM for a rule changes depending on the importance of attributes of the rule. As a result, the dynamic nature of a real system can be incorporated in an inference with fuzzy production rules.

  • Conventional expert systems has been criticized due to its lack of capability to adapt to the changing decision-making environments. In literature, many methods have been proposed to make expert systems more environment-adaptive by incorporating fuzzy logic and neural networks. The objective of this paper is to propose a new approach to building a self-evolving expert system inference mechanism by integrating fuzzy neural network and fuzzy rule extraction technique. The main recipe of our proposed approach is to fuzzify the training data, train them by a fuzzy neural network, extract a set of fuzzy rules from the trained network, organize a knowledge base, and refine the fuzzy rules by applying a pruning algorithm when the decision-making environments are detected to be changed significantly. To prove the validity, we tested our proposed self-evolving expert systems inference mechanism by using the bankruptcy data, and compared its results with the conventional neural network. Non-parametric statistical analysis of the experimental results showed that our proposed approach is valid significantly.

  • In general, the certainty factors of the fuzzy production rules and the certainty factors of fuzzy propositions appearing in the rules are represented by real values between zero and one. If it can allow the certainty factors of the fuzzy production rules and the certainty factors of fuzzy propositions to be represented by interval -valued fuzzy sets, then it can allow the reasoning of rule-based systems to perform fuzzy reasoning in more flexible manner. This paper presents fuzzy Petri nets and proposes an interval-valued fuzzy backward reasoning algorithm for rule-based systems based on fuzzy Petri nets Fuzzy Petri nets model the fuzzy production rules in the knowledge base of a rule-based system, where the certainty factors of the fuzzy propositions appearing in the fuzzy production rules and the certainty factors of the rules are represented by interval-valued fuzzy sets. The algorithm we proposed generates the backward reasoning path from the goal node to the initial nodes and then evaluates the certainty factor of the goal node. The proposed interval-valued fuzzy backward reasoning algorithm can allow the rule-based systems to perform fuzzy backward reasoning in a more flexible and human-like manner.

  • For last several decades with the achievement of fast economic development, the electrical fires occupies over 30 percent of total fire incidents almost every year in Korea and not decreased in spite of much times and efforts. Electrical fire cause diagnostics are to confirm a cause for the fire by examination of fire scene. Cause diagnosis methods haven't been systematized yet, because of limits for available information, investigator's biased knowledge, etc. Therefore, in order to assist the investigators and to find out the exact causes of electrical fires, required is research for an electrical fire cause diagnosis system using DB, computer programming and some mathematical tools. The electrical fire cause diagnosis system has two functions of DB and electrical fire cause diagnosis. The cause diagnosis is conducted by a case-based reasoning on a case base and rule-based reasoning on a rule base. For the diagnosis with high reliability, a mixed reasoning approach of a case-based reasoning and fuzzy rule-based reasoning has been adopted. The electrical fire cause diagnosis system proposes the electrical fire causes inferred from the diagnosis processes, and possibility of the causes as well.

  • A sinusoidal rotatory chair system using a self-tuning and following control by a fuzzy was designed to evaluate the vestibular function and to apply to a robot driving power system. The experimental results by the sinusoidal rotatory chair system were pretty good and whitch had smaller then ${\pm}210$ pulse error on the ${\pm}810^{\circ}$ sinusoidal rotation at 0.12 Hz by using a 850W DC servo motor. As a results, the sinusoidal rotatory chair system may be useful to evaluate the vestibular function in the field of medicine, and it can be used to robotics or a numerical control system (NC) on the industry if the the obtained control method and the system are adapted for a channel.

  • This paper presents a method to select contingency ranking considering voltage security problems in power systems. Direct method which needs not the detailed knowledge of the post contingency voltage at each bus is used. Based on system operator's experience and knowledge, the membership functions for the MVAR mismatch and allowable voltage violation are justified describing linguistic representation with heuristic rules. Rule base is used for the computation of severity index for each contingency by fuzzy inference. Contingency ranking harmful to the system is formed by the index for security evaluation. Compared with 1P-1Q iteration, this algorithm using direct method and fuzzy inference shows higher computation speed and almost the same accuracy. The proposed method is applied to model system and KEPCO pratical system which consists of 311 buses and 609 lines to show its effectiveness.

  • Inference rules of the knowledge base, generated by experts or optimization, may be often inconsistent and incomplete. This paper suggests a systematic and automatic method which extracts inference rules not from experts' subject but from data. First, input/output linguistic variables are partitioned into several properties by the fuzzy equalization algorithm and each combination of their properties comes to premise of inference rule. Then, the conclusion which is the mast suitable for the premise is selected by evaluating consistent measure. This method, automatically from data, derives inference rules from experience. It is shown through application that extracts new inference rules between hull dimensions and hull performance.
