  • A design method of rule-based fuzzy modeling is presented for the model identification of complex and nonlinear systems. The proposed rule-based fuzzy modeling implements system structure and parameter identification in the efficient form of ``IF....,THEN...', using the theories of optimization theory , linguistic fuzzy implication rules and fuzzy c-means clustering. Three kinds of method for fuzzy modeling presented in this paper include simplified inference (type I), linear inference (type 2), and modified linear inference (type 3). In order to identify premise structure and parameter of fuzzy implication rules, fuzzy c- means clustering and modified complex method are used respectively and the least sequare method is utilized for the identification of optimum consequence parameters. Time series data for gas furance and those for sewage treatment process are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed rule-based fuzzy modeling. Comparison shows that the proposed method can produce the fuzzy model with higher accuracy than previous other studies.

  • Knowledge discovery in databases(KDD) is the process for extracting valid, novel, potentially useful and understandable knowledge form real data. There are many academic and industrial activities with new technologies and application areas. Particularly, data mining is the core step in the KDD process, consisting of many algorithms to perform clustering, pattern recognition and rule induction functions. The main goal of these algorithms is prediction and description. Prediction means the assessment of unknown variables. Description is concerned with providing understandable results in a compatible format to human users. We introduce an efficient data mining algorithm considering predictive and descriptive capability. Reasonable pattern is derived from real world data by a revised neural network model and a proposed fuzzy rule extraction technique is applied to obtain understandable knowledge. The proposed neural network model is a hierarchical self-organizing system. The rule base is compatible to decision makers perception because the generated fuzzy rule set reflects the human information process. Results from real world application are analyzed to evaluate the system\`s performance.

  • If safety injection systems (SISs) do not work in the event of a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA), the accident can progress to a severe accident in which the reactor core is exposed and the reactor vessel fails. Therefore, it is considered that a technology that provides recoverable maximum time for SIS actuation is necessary to prevent this progression. In this study, the corresponding time was defined as the golden time. To achieve the objective of accurately predicting the golden time, the prediction was performed using the deep fuzzy neural network (DFNN) with rule-dropout. The DFNN with rule-dropout has an architecture in which many of the fuzzy neural networks (FNNs) are connected and is a method in which the fuzzy rule numbers, which are directly related to the number of nodes in the FNN that affect inference performance, are properly adjusted by a genetic algorithm. The golden time prediction performance of the DFNN model with rule-dropout was better than that of the support vector regression model. By using the prediction result through the proposed DFNN with rule-dropout, it is expected to prevent the aggravation of the accidents by providing the maximum remaining time for SIS recovery, which failed in the LOCA situation.

  • Recently, fuzzy and neural network techniques have been successfully applied to control of complex and ill-defined system in a wide variety of areas, such as robot, water purification, automatic train operation system and automatic container crane operation system, etc. In this paper, we present a neuro-fuzzy controller which unifies both fuzzy logic and multi-layered feedforward neural networks. Fuzzy logic provides a means for converting linguistic control knowledge into control actions. On the other hand, feedforward neural networks provide salient features, such as learning and parallelism. In the proposed neuro-fuzzy controller, the parameters of membership functions in the antecedent part of fuzzy inference rules are identified by using the error backpropagation algorithm as a learning rule, while the coefficients of the linear combination of input variables in the consequent part are determined by using the least square estimation method. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified through computer simulation of an inverted pendulum system.

  • In this paper, a framework for implementing UFIS (Unified Fuzzy rule-based knowledge Inference System) is presented. First, fuzzy clustering and fuzzy rules deal with the presence of the knowledge in DB (DataBase) and its value is presented with a value between 0 and 1. Second, RDB (Relational DB) and SQL queries provide more flexible functionality fur knowledge management than the conventional non-fuzzy knowledge management systems. Therefore, the obtained fuzzy rules offer the user additional information to be added to the query with the purpose of guiding the search and improving the retrieval in knowledge base and/ or rule base. The framework can be used as DM (Data Mining) and ES (Expert Systems) development and easily integrated with conventional KMS (Knowledge Management Systems) and ES.

  • Experimental software datasets describing software projects in terms of their complexity and development time have been the subject of intensive modeling. A number of various modeling methodologies and modeling designs have been proposed including such approaches as neural networks, fuzzy, and fuzzy neural network models. In this study, we introduce the concept of the Rule-based fuzzy polynomial neural networks (RFPNN) as a hybrid modeling architecture and discuss its comprehensive design methodology. The development of the RFPNN dwells on the technologies of Computational Intelligence (CI), namely fuzzy sets, neural networks, and genetic algorithms. The architecture of the RFPNN results from a synergistic usage of RFNN and PNN. RFNN contribute to the formation of the premise part of the rule-based structure of the RFPNN. The consequence part of the RFPNN is designed using PNN. We discuss two kinds of RFPNN architectures and propose a comprehensive learning algorithm. In particular, it is shown that this network exhibits a dynamic structure. The experimental results include well-known software data such as the NASA dataset concerning software cost estimation and the one describing software modules of the Medical Imaging System (MIS).

  • A rule weight -based fuzzy classification model is proposed to analyze the patterns of admission-discharge of patients as a previous research for differential diagnosis of dyspnea. The proposed model is automatically generated from a labeled data set, supervised learning strategy, using three procedure methodology: i) select fuzzy partition regions from spatial distribution of data; ii) generate fuzzy membership functions from the selected partition regions; and iii) extract a set of candidate rules and resolve a conflict problem among the candidate rules. The effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy classification model was demonstrated by comparing the experimental results for the dyspnea patients' data set with 11 features selected from 55 features by clinicians with those obtained using the conventional classification methods, such as standard fuzzy classifier without rule weights, C4.5, QDA, kNN, and SVMs.

  • Although Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) adopted three terms as input gives better performance. FLC is in general composed of two-term control because of the difficulty in the construction of fuzzy rule base. In this paper, a three-term FLC which is similar to PID control but acts as a nonlinear controller is proposed. To reduce the complexity of the rule base design and increase efficiency, a simplified fuzzy PID control is induced from a hybrid velocity/position type PID algorithm by sharing a common rule base for both fuzzy Pi and fuzzy PD parts. It is simple in structure, easy in implementation, and fast in calculation. The phase plane technique is applied to obtain the rule base for fuzzy two-term control and them. The resultant rule base is Macvicar-Whelan type. The frequency response information is used in tuning of membership functions. Also a tuning strategy for the scaling factors is Proposed based on the relationship between PID gain and them. Simulation results show better performance and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, a new architecture and comprehensive design methodology of genetically optimized Rule-based Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks(gRFPNN) are introduced and a series of numeric experiments are carried out. The architecture of the resulting gRFPNN results from asynergistic usage of the hybrid system generated by combining rule-based Fuzzy Neural Networks(FNN) with polynomial neural networks (PNN). FNN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the overall rule-based structure of the gRFPNN. The consequence part of the gRFPNN is designed using PNNs. At the premise part of the gRFPNN, FNN exploits fuzzy set based approach designed by using space partitioning in terms of individual variables and comes in two fuzzy inference forms: simplified and linear. As the consequence part of the gRFPNN, the development of the genetically optimized PNN dwells on two general optimization mechanism: the structural optimization is realized via GAs whereas in case of the parametric optimization we proceed with a standard least square method-based learning. To evaluate the performance of the gRFPNN, the models are experimented with the use of several representative numerical examples. A comparative analysis shows that the proposed gRFPNN are models with higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than other intelligent models presented previously.

  • The optimal control of heat pump performance for heating mode operation was investigated. Fuzzy logic was applied to control the heating performance of heat pump system and superheat at compressor discharge was taken as a control variable. Regression model was adapted to determine the optimal points where COP is maximized. Optimization of fuzzy rule table was investigated to improve operation performance of heat pump system. Experiments were carried out using original fuzzy table and the modified fuzzy rule table for heating mode operation of heat pump system. The results show that control performance of heat pump system with the modified fuzzy rule table was better than that with the original rule table.
