  • This paper presents a control approach for designing a self tuning fuzzy controller for a synchronous generator excitation and SVC system. A combination of thyristor-controlled reactors and fixed capacitors (TCR-FC) type SVC is recognized as having the most flexible control and high speed response, which has been widely utilized in power systems, is considered and designed to improve the response of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. The proposed parameter self tuning algorithm of fuzzy controller is based on the steepest decent method using two direction vectors which make error between inference values of fuzzy controller and output values of the specially selected PSS reduce steepestly. Using input-output data pair obtained from PSS, the parameters in antecedent part and in consequent part of fuzzy inference rules are learned and tuned automatically using the proposed steepest decent method. The related simulation results show that the proposed fuzzy controller is more powerful than the conventional ones.

  • We designed a neuro-fuzzy controller to improve some problems that are happened when the DC servo motor is controlled by a PID controller or a fuzzy logic controller. Our model proposed in this paper has the stable and accurate responses, and shortened settling time. To prove the capability of the neuro-fuzzy controller designed in this paper, the proposed controller is applied to the speed control of DC servo motor. The results showed that the proposed controller did not produce the overshoot, which happens when PID controller is used, and also it did not produce the steady state error when FLC is used. And also, it reduced the settling time about 10%. In addition, we could by aware that our model was only about 60% of the value of current peak of PID controller.

  • Tunnel lighting is composed of entrance zone, interior zone and exit zone by KS C 3703. We have to consider adaptation at entrance zone and exit zone lighting to prevent deteriorate visibility like black hole and white hole phenomenon. So External luminance, vehicle velocity and traffic volume should be considered in threshold zone lighting and vehicle speed and traffic volume should be considered in interior zone lighting. But existing tunnel lighting system is not good at visibility and economic because that is only controled by external luminance. So in this paper, We improve visibility and economic of tunnel lighting system using fuzzy reasoning according to external luminance, vehicle velocity, traffic volume.

  • Recently, it was very difficult for hydraulic governor to regulate the speed of high power engine with long stroke at low speed and low load, because of the jiggling phenomena by rough fluctuation of rotating torque and the hunting phenomena by long dead time occurred in fuel combustion process in the engine cylinder. In this paper, the influence of engine dead time is investigated by Nickels chart, and hybrid controller selected advantages of PID and fuzzy logic controller is provided to improve the performance of speed control of a low speed and long stroke diesel engine.

  • Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) adjustable speed drives offer significant advantages over induction motor drives in a wide variety of industrial applications such as high power density, high efficiency, improved dynamic performance and reliability. This paper proposes on-line efficiency optimization of IPMSM drive using fuzzy logic control(FLC) and the loss minimization method. In order to optimize the efficiency the loss minimization algorithm is developed based on motor model and operating condition. The d-axis armature current is utilized to minimize the losses of the IPMSM in a closed loop vector control environment. The controllable electrical loss which consists of the copper loss and the iron loss can be minimized by the optimal control of the armature current. The minimization of loss is possible to realize efficiency optimization control for the proposed IPMSM. The optimal current can be decided according to the operating speed and the load conditions. The proposed control algorithm is applied to IPMSM drive system and the operating characteristics controlled by the loss minimization method and FLC control are examined in detail.

  • This talk presents the overview of the author's research and development activities on fuzzy inference hardware. We involved it with two distinct approaches. The first approach is to use application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technology. The fuzzy inference method is directly implemented in silicon. The second approach, which is in its preliminary stage, is to use more conventional microprocessor architecture. Here, we use a quantitative technique used by designer of reduced instruction set computer (RISC) to modify an architecture of a microprocessor. In the ASIC approach, we implemented the most widely used fuzzy inference mechanism directly on silicon. The mechanism is beaded on a max-min compositional rule of inference, and Mandami's method of fuzzy implication. The two VLSI fuzzy inference chips are designed, fabricated, and fully tested. Both used a full-custom CMOS technology. The second and more claborate chip was designed at the University of North Carolina(U C) in cooperation with MCNC. Both VLSI chips had muliple datapaths for rule digital fuzzy inference chips had multiple datapaths for rule evaluation, and they executed multiple fuzzy if-then rules in parallel. The AT & T chip is the first digital fuzzy inference chip in the world. It ran with a 20 MHz clock cycle and achieved an approximately 80.000 Fuzzy Logical inferences Per Second (FLIPS). It stored and executed 16 fuzzy if-then rules. Since it was designed as a proof of concept prototype chip, it had minimal amount of peripheral logic for system integration. UNC/MCNC chip consists of 688,131 transistors of which 476,160 are used for RAM memory. It ran with a 10 MHz clock cycle. The chip has a 3-staged pipeline and initiates a computation of new inference every 64 cycle. This chip achieved an approximately 160,000 FLIPS. The new architecture have the following important improvements from the AT & T chip: Programmable rule set memory (RAM). On-chip fuzzification operation by a table lookup method. On-chip defuzzification operation by a centroid method. Reconfigurable architecture for processing two rule formats. RAM/datapath redundancy for higher yield It can store and execute 51 if-then rule of the following format: IF A and B and C and D Then Do E, and Then Do F. With this format, the chip takes four inputs and produces two outputs. By software reconfiguration, it can store and execute 102 if-then rules of the following simpler format using the same datapath: IF A and B Then Do E. With this format the chip takes two inputs and produces one outputs. We have built two VME-bus board systems based on this chip for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The board is now installed in a robot at ORNL. Researchers uses this board for experiment in autonomous robot navigation. The Fuzzy Logic system board places the Fuzzy chip into a VMEbus environment. High level C language functions hide the operational details of the board from the applications programme . The programmer treats rule memories and fuzzification function memories as local structures passed as parameters to the C functions. ASIC fuzzy inference hardware is extremely fast, but they are limited in generality. Many aspects of the design are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a fuzzy information processor as an application specific processor using a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach was developed by RISC designers. In effect, we are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a specialized RISC processor for fuzzy information processing. As the first step, we measured the possible speed-up of a fuzzy inference program based on if-then rules by an introduction of specialized instructions, i.e., min and max instructions. The minimum and maximum operations are heavily used in fuzzy logic applications as fuzzy intersection and union. We performed measurements using a MIPS R3000 as a base micropro essor. The initial result is encouraging. We can achieve as high as a 2.5 increase in inference speed if the R3000 had min and max instructions. Also, they are useful for speeding up other fuzzy operations such as bounded product and bounded sum. The embedded processor's main task is to control some device or process. It usually runs a single or a embedded processer to create an embedded processor for fuzzy control is very effective. Table I shows the measured speed of the inference by a MIPS R3000 microprocessor, a fictitious MIPS R3000 microprocessor with min and max instructions, and a UNC/MCNC ASIC fuzzy inference chip. The software that used on microprocessors is a simulator of the ASIC chip. The first row is the computation time in seconds of 6000 inferences using 51 rules where each fuzzy set is represented by an array of 64 elements. The second row is the time required to perform a single inference. The last row is the fuzzy logical inferences per second (FLIPS) measured for ach device. There is a large gap in run time between the ASIC and software approaches even if we resort to a specialized fuzzy microprocessor. As for design time and cost, these two approaches represent two extremes. An ASIC approach is extremely expensive. It is, therefore, an important research topic to design a specialized computing architecture for fuzzy applications that falls between these two extremes both in run time and design time/cost. • The information of the motor speed and flux are more necessary than the other informations which have to get for the induction motor drive. which is the exact informations of the speed and flux are known without the speed and flux sensors, many problems for induction motor drive will be solved. In this paper, it is studied on the method able to get the informations of the speed and the flux for the induction motor. The informations for the rotator speed and flux of the induction motor are estimated exactly and rapidly by the observer system proposed in this paper and the induction motor is controlled by those informations of the speed and flux exactly and rapidly by the fuzzy controller set in the observer system.

  • According to the operating characteristics of pump applications, they should exhibit high efficiency and energy saving capabilities throughout the whole operating process. A novel efficiency optimization control strategy is presented here to meet the high efficiency demand of a variable speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). The core of this strategy is the excellent integration of mended maximum torque to the current control algorithm, based on the losses model during the dynamic and the grade search method with changed step by fuzzy logic during the steady. The performance experiments for the control system of a variable speed high efficiency PMSM have been completed. The test results verified that the system can reliably operate with a different control strategy during dynamic and steady operation, and the system exhibits better performance when using the efficiency-optimization control.

  • A neural network based control algorithm with fuzzy compensation is proposed for the automated adjustment in the production of electronic end-products. The process of adjustment is to tune the variable devices in order to examine the specified performances of the products ready prior to packing. Camcorder is considered as a target product. The required test and adjustment system is developed. The adjustment system consists of a NNC(neural network controller), a sub-NNC, and an auxiliary algorithm utilizing the fuzzy logic. The neural network is trained by means of errors between the outputs of the real system and the network, as well as on the errors between the changing rate of the outputs. Control algorithm is derived to speed up the learning dynamics and to avoid the local minima at higher energy level, and is able to converge to the global minimum at lower energy level. Many unexpected problems in the application of the real system are resolved by the auxiliary algorithms. As the adjustments of multiple items are related to each other, but the significant effect of performance by any specific item is not observed. The experimental result shows that the proposed method performs very effectively and are advantageous in simple architecture, extracting easily the training data without expertise, adapting to the unstable system that the input-output properties of each products are slightly different, with a wide application to other similar adjustment processes.
