  • Sunspots are dark areas that grow and decay on the lowest level of the sun that is visible from the Earth. Shot-term predictions of solar activity are essential to help plan missions and to design satellites that will survive for their useful lifetimes. This paper presents a parallel-structure fuzzy system(PSFS) for prediction of sunspot number time series. The PSFS consists of a multiple number of component fuzzy systems connected in parallel. Each component fuzzy system in the PSFS predicts future data independently based on its past time series data with different embedding dimension and time delay. An embedding dimension determines the number of inputs of each component fuzzy system and a time delay decides the interval of inputs of the time series. According to the embedding dimension and the time delay, the component fuzzy system takes various input-output pairs. The PSFS determines the final predicted value as an average of all the outputs of the component fuzzy systems in order to reduce error accumulation effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to generate the local level knowledge structure of a single document, similar to end-of-the-book indexes and table of contents of printed material through the use of term clustering and cluster representative term selection. Furthermore, it aims to analyze the functionalities of the knowledge structure. and to confirm the applicability of these methods in user-friend1y information services. The results of the term clustering experiment showed that the performance of the Ward's method was superior to that of the fuzzy K -means clustering method. In the cluster representative term selection experiment, using the highest passage frequency term as the representative yielded the best performance. Finally, the result of user task-based functionality tests illustrate that the automatically generated knowledge structure in this study functions similarly to the local level knowledge structure presented In printed material.

  • This paper suggests a method designing the TSK fuzzy controller based on the TSK fuzzy model, which guarantees the stability of the closed loop system and makes the response of the closed loop system to be a desired one. This paper deals with the general type of TSK fuzzy model of which consequents are affine equations having a constant term. The TSK fuzzy controller suggested in this paper is designed by using the pole placement which developed for the linear systems and makes the closed loop system have the same behavior as a desired linear system. A reference input can be introduced to the suggested TSK fuzzy controller and an integral action also can be introduced. Simulation results reveal that the suggested methods are practically feasible. This paper deals with both the continuous systems and the discrete systems.

  • This paper describes the stability analysis of TSK (Takagi-Sugeno-Kang) fuzzy systems which can represent a large class of nonlinear systems with good accuracy. A TSK fuzzy model consists of TSK fuzzy rules and the consequent of each fuzzy rule is a linear input-output equation with a constant term. There may exist equilibrium points more than one in the TSK fuzzy model and each equilibrium point rnay also have different nature of stability. The local stability of an equilibrium point is determined by eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix of the linearized TSK fuzzy model around the equilibrium point. Stability of both the continuous-time and the discrete-time systems is analyzed in this paper.

  • Term weighting is a popular technique that effectively weighs the term features to improve accuracy in document classification. While several successful term weighting algorithms have been suggested, none of them appears to perform well consistently across different data domains. In this paper we propose several reasonable methods to combine different term weight vectors to yield a robust document classifier that performs consistently well on diverse datasets. Specifically we suggest two approaches: i) learning a single weight vector that lies in a convex hull of the base vectors while minimizing the class prediction loss, and ii) a mini-max classifier that aims for robustness of the individual weight vectors by minimizing the loss of the worst-performing strategy among the base vectors. We provide efficient solution methods for these optimization problems. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on several benchmark document datasets, significantly outperforming the existing term weighting methods.

  • In this work, we propose a new method of extracting and weighting representative keywords(RKs) from a few documents that might interest a user. In order to extract RKs, we first extract candidate terms and then choose a number of terms called initial representative keywords (IRKS) from them through fuzzy inference. Then, by expanding and reweighting IRKS using term co-occurrence similarity, the final RKs are obtained. Performance of our approach is heavily influenced by effectiveness of selection method of IRKS so that we choose fuzzy inference because it is more effective in handling the uncertainty inherent in selecting representative keywords of documents. The problem addressed in this paper can be viewed as the one of calculating center of document vectors. So, to show the usefulness of our approach, we compare with two famous methods - Rocchio and Widrow-Hoff - on a number of documents collections. The results show that our approach outperforms the other approaches.

  • In this paper, a fuzzy prediction method is proposed for time series data having uncertainty and non-stationary characteristics. Conventional methods, which use past data directly in prediction procedure, cannot properly handle non-stationary data whose long-term mean is floating. To cope with this problem, a data preprocessing technique utilizing the differences of original time series data is suggested. The difference sets are established from data. And the optimal difference set is selected for input of fuzzy predictor. The proposed method based the Takigi-Sugeno-Kang(TSK or TS) fuzzy rule. Computer simulations show improved results for various time series.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified fuzzy clustering algorithm which can overcome the center deviation due to the Euclidean distance commonly used in fuzzy clustering. Among fuzzy clustering methods, Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) is the most well-known clustering algorithm and has been widely applied to various problems successfully. In FCM, however, cluster centers tend leaning to high density clusters because the Euclidean distance measure forces high density cluster to make more contribution to clustering result. Proposed is an enhanced algorithm which modifies the objective function of FCM by adding a center-scattering term to make centers not to be close due to the cluster density. The proposed method converges more to real centers with small number of iterations compared to FCM. All the strengths can be verified with experimental results.

  • This paper discusses real-time peak shaving algorithms for a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS). Although several transmission and distribution functions could be implemented for diverse purposes in BESS applications, this paper focuses on a real-time peak shaving algorithm for an energy time shift, considering wind power generation. In a high wind penetration environment, the effective load levels obtained by subtracting the wind generation from the load time series at each long-term cycle time unit are needed for efficient peak shaving. However, errors can exist in the forecast load and wind generation levels, and the real-time peak shaving operation might require a method for wind generation that includes comparatively large forecasting errors. To effectively deal with the errors of wind generation forecasting, this paper proposes a real-time peak shaving algorithm for threshold value-based peak shaving that considers fuzzy wind power generation.

  • A fuzzy control algorithm is used to weigh alloy metal into electric arc furnace and implemented by using ladder program for programmable logic controller, where weight error and its derivative are used for input variables and vibration amplitude of alloy bin is used for output variable. Proposed fuzzy control algorithm is applied to the plant and results in higher measuring accuracy as well as faster measuring term than conventional on-off control system.
