  • A fault is considered as a variation of physical parameters; therefore the design of fault detection and identification(FDI) can be reduced to the parameter identification of a non linear system and to the association of the set of the estimated parameters with the mode of faults. Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System which contains multiple linear models as consequent part is used to model nonlinear systems. Generally, the linear parameters in neuro-fuzzy inference system can be effectively utilized to fault diagnosis. In this paper, we proposes an FDI system for nonlinear systems using neuro-fuzzy inference system. The proposed diagnostic system consists of two neuro-fuzzy inference systems which operate in two different modes (parallel and series-parallel mode). It generates the parameter residuals associated with each modes of faults which can be further processed by additional RBF (Radial Basis Function) network to identify the faults. The proposed FDI scheme has been tested by simulation on two-tank system.

  • The merit of fuzzy rule based systems stems from their capability of encoding qualitative knowledge of experts into quantitative rules. Recent advancement in automatic tuning or self-organization of fuzzy rules from experimental data further enhances their power, allowing the integration of the top-down encoding of knowledge with the bottom-up learning of rules. In this paper, methods of self-organizing fuzzy rules and of performing defuzzification and inference is presented based on a multi-resolution radial basis function network. The network learns an arbitrary input-output mapping from sample distribution as the union of hyper-ellipsoidal clusters of various locations, sizes and shapes. The hyper-ellipsoidal clusters, representing fuzzy rules, are self-organized based of global competition in such a way as to ensute uniform mapping errors. The cooperative interpolation among the multiple clusters associated with a mapping allows the network to perform a bidirectional many-to-many mapping, representing a particular from of defuzzification. Finally, an inference engine is constructed for the network to search for an optimal chain of rules or situation transitions under the constraint of transition feasibilities imposed by the learned mapping. Applications of the proposed network to skill acquisition are shown.

  • Fuzzy logic controllers have been shown better performance than conventional ones especially in highly nonlinear plants. These results are caused by the nonlinear fuzzy rules were not sufficient to cope with significant uncertainty of the plants and environment. Moreover, it is hard to make fuzzy rules consistent and complete. In this paper, we employed a predictive neural network to enhance the nonlinear inference capability. The predictive neural network generates predictive outputs of a controlled plant using the current and past outputs and current inputs. These predictive outputs are used in terms of fuzzy rules in fuzzy inferencing. From experiments, we found that the predictive term of fuzzy rules enhanced the inference capability of the controller. This predictive neural network can also help the controller cope with uncertainty of plants or environment by on-line learning.

  • In this paper, we propose the Fuzzy Inference-based Reinforcement Learning Algorithm. We offer more similar learning scheme to the psychological learning of the higher animal's including human, by using Fuzzy Inference in Reinforcement Learning. The proposed method follows the way linguistic and conceptional expression have an effect on human's behavior by reasoning reinforcement based on fuzzy rule. The intervals of fuzzy membership functions are found optimally by genetic algorithms. And using Recurrent state is considered to make an action in dynamical environment. We show the validity of the proposed learning algorithm by applying to the inverted pendulum control problem.

  • We present a method to modify the recognition of neural networks by the fuzzy inference in a handwritten digit recognition with large deformations, and we verified the method by the experiment. The neural networks take long time in learning and recognize 100% on the learning pattern. But the neural networks don't show a good recognition on the testing pattern. So, we apply the modified method as the fuzzy inference. As a result, the recognition and false recognition of neural networks was improved 90.2% and 9.8% respectively at 89.6% and 10.4% initially. This approach decreased especially the false recognition on digit 3, 5. We used the density of digit to extract the fuzzy membership function in this experiment. But, because the handwritten digit have varified input patterns, we will get a better recognition by extracting varifed characteristics and applying the composite fuzzy inference. We also propose the application of fuzzy inference on matching the input pattern, than applying strictly the fuzzy inference.

  • In this research, we propose the mechanism to develop self-evolving expert systems (SEES) based on data mining (DM), fuzzy neural networks (FNN), and relational database (RDB)-driven forward/backward inference engine. Most researchers had tried to develop a text-oriented knowledge base (KB) and inference engine (IE). However, this approach had some limitations such as 1) automatic rule extraction, 2) manipulation of ambiguousness in knowledge, 3) expandability of knowledge base, and 4) speed of inference. To overcome these limitations, knowledge engineers had tried to develop an automatic knowledge extraction mechanism. As a result, the adaptability of the expert systems was improved. Nonetheless, they didn't suggest a hybrid and generalized solution to develop self-evolving expert systems. To this purpose, we propose an automatic knowledge acquisition and composite inference mechanism based on DM, FNN, and RDB-driven inference engine. Our proposed mechanism has five advantages. First, it can extract and reduce the specific domain knowledge from incomplete database by using data mining technology. Second, our proposed mechanism can manipulate the ambiguousness in knowledge by using fuzzy membership functions. Third, it can construct the relational knowledge base and expand the knowledge base unlimitedly with RDBMS (relational database management systems) module. Fourth, our proposed hybrid data mining mechanism can reflect both association rule-based logical inference and complicate fuzzy relationships. Fifth, RDB-driven forward and backward inference time is shorter than the traditional text-oriented inference time.

  • This study is aimed at the development of a runoff forecasting model by using the Fuzzy inference system and Neural Network model to solve the uncertainties occurring in the process of rainfall-runoff modeling and improve the modeling accuracy of the stream runoff forecasting. The Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) model were used in this study. The NF model, recently received a great deal of attention, improve the existing Neural Networks by the aid of the Fuzzy theory applied to each node. The study area is the downstreams of Naeseung-chun. Therefore, time-dependent data was obtained from the Wolpo water level gauging station. 11 and 2 out of total 13 flood events were selected for the training and testing set of model respectively. The schematic diagram method and the statistical analysis are conducted to evaluate the feasibility of rainfall-runoff modeling. The model accuracy was rapidly decreased as the forecasting time became longer. The NF model can give accurate runoff forecasts up to 4 hours ahead in standard above the Determination coefficient $(R^2)$ 0.7. In the comparison of the runoff forecasting using the NF and TANK models, characteristics of peak runoff in the TANK model was higher than ones in the NF models, but peak values of hydrograph in the NF models were similar.

  • In this study, we introduce the adaptive Polynomial Neuro-Fuzzy Networks(PNFN) architecture generated from the fusion of fuzzy inference system and PNN algorithm. The PNFN dwells on the ideas of fuzzy rule-based computing and neural networks. Fuzzy inference system is applied in the 1st layer of PNFN and PNN algorithm is employed in the 2nd layer or higher. From these the multilayer structure of the PNFN is constructed. In order words, in the Fuzzy Inference System(FIS) used in the nodes of the 1st layer of PNFN, either the simplified or regression polynomial inference method is utilized. And as the premise part of the rules, both triangular and Gaussian like membership function are studied. In the 2nd layer or higher, PNN based on GMDH and regression polynomial is generated in a dynamic way, unlike in the case of the popular multilayer perceptron structure. That is, the PNN is an analytic technique for identifying nonlinear relationships between system's inputs and outputs and is a flexible network structure constructed through the successive generation of layers from nodes represented in partial descriptions of I/O relatio of data. The experiment part of the study involves representative time series such as Box-Jenkins gas furnace data used across various neurofuzzy systems and a comparative analysis is included as well.
