The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of fuzzy math strategy to calculate variability and uncertainty in quantitative risk assessment. We compared the propagation of uncertainty using fuzzy math simulation with Monte Carlo simulation. The risk far Listeria monocytogenes contamination was estimated for carcass and processed pork by fuzzy math and Monte Carlo simulations, respectively. The data used in these simulations were taken from a recent report on pork production. In carcass, the mean values for the risk from fuzzy math and Monte Carlo simulations were -4.393 log $CFU/cm^2$ and -4.589 log $CFU/cm^2$, respectively; in processed pork, they were -4.185 log $CFU/cm^2$ and -4.466 log $CFU/cm^2$ respectively. The distribution of values obtained using the fuzzy math simulation included all of the results obtained using the Monte Carlo simulation. Consequently, fuzzy math simulation was found to be a good alternative to Monte Carlo simulation in quantitative risk assessment of pork production.

This tutorial paper has been written for biologists, physicians or beginners in fuzzy sets theory and applications. This field is introduced in the framework of medical diagnosis problems. The paper describes and illustrates with practical examples, a general methodology of special interest in the processing of borderline cases, that allows a graded assignment of diagnoses to patients. A pattern of medical knowledge consists of a tableau with linguistic entries or of fuzzy propositions. Relationships between symptoms and diagnoses are interpreted as labels of fuzzy sets. It is shown how possibility measures (soft matching) can be used and combined to derive diagnoses after measurements on collected data. The concepts and methods are illustrated in a biomedical application on inflammatory protein variations. In the case of poor diagnostic classifications, it is introduced appropriate ponderations, acting on the characterizations of proteins, in order to decrease their relative influence. As a consequence, when pattern matching is achieved, the final ranking of inflammatory syndromes assigned to a given patient might change to better fit the actual classification. Defuzzification of results (i.e. diagnostic groups assigned to patients) is performed as a non fuzzy sets partition issued from a "separating power", and not as the center of gravity method commonly employed in fuzzy control. It is then introduced a model of fuzzy connectionist expert system, in which an artificial neural network is designed to build the knowledge base of an expert system, from training examples (this model can also be used for specifications of rules in fuzzy logic control). Two types of weights are associated with the connections: primary linguistic weights, interpreted as labels of fuzzy sets, and secondary numerical weights. Cell activation is computed through MIN-MAX fuzzy equations of the weights. Learning consists in finding the (numerical) weights and the network topology. This feed forward network is described and illustrated in the same biomedical domain as in the first part.

As a modeling method where the merits of fuzzy inference system and evolutionary computation are put together, evolutionary fuzzy modeling performs global approximate optimization. The paper proposes fuzzy clustering as fuzzy rule generation process which is one of the most important steps in evolutionary fuzzy modeling. With application of fuzzy clustering into the experiment or simulation results, fuzzy rules which properly describe non-linear and complex design problem can be obtained. The efficiency of evolutionary fuzzy modeling can be improved utilizing the membership degrees of data to clusters from the results of fuzzy clustering. To ensure the validity of the proposed method, the real design problem of an automotive inner trim is applied and the global approximation is achieved. Evolutionary fuzzy modeling is performed for several cases which differ in the number of clusters and the criterion of rule selection and their results are compared to prove that the proposed method can provide proper fuzzy rules for a given system and reduce computation time while maintaining the errors of modeling as a satisfactory level.
The purpose of this paper is to study the correlation application that electrical fire causes occurs for overcurrent and leakage current signals in the indoor wiring. In the order to purpose, the causes data of overcurrent, or leakage current of electrical fire are drawn out referring to past studies, consulting with experts and experimental data. The correlation application was then applied with fuzzy logic of intelligent technique. To check the reliability and performance of the correlation application, modified center of area(CoA) was adopted to calculate the possibility that electrical fire occurs, whose value was then compared to the results. The chance of electrical fire calculated is higher when two causes of fire are put into the CoA of the correlation application of this paper than that of when each cause is separately put into the CoA. The correlation application developed in this study enables better analysis on possible electrical fire due to overcurrent, or leakage current and provides managers with the possibility of electrical fire so that they can better manage at a time of overcurrent, or leakage current.
Background: Spontaneous combustion of coal is one of the factors which causes direct or indirect gas and dust explosion, mine fire, the release of toxic gases, loss of reserve, and loss of miners' life. To avoid these incidents, the prediction of spontaneous combustion is essential. The safety of miner's in the mining field can be assured if the prediction of a coal fire is carried out at an early stage. Method: Adularya Underground Coal Mine which is fully mechanized with longwall mining method was selected as a case study area. The data collected for 2017, by sensors from ten gas monitoring stations were used for the simulation and prediction of a coal fire. In this study, the fuzzy logic model is used because of the uncertainties, nonlinearity, and imprecise variables in the data. For coal fire prediction, CO, O2, N2, and temperature were used as input variables whereas fire intensity was considered as the output variable. The simulation of the model is carried out using the Mamdani inference system and run by the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox in MATLAB. Results: The results showed that the fuzzy logic system is more reliable in predicting fire intensity with respect to uncertainties and nonlinearities of the data. It also indicates that the 1409 and 610/2B gas station points have a greater chance of causing spontaneous combustion and therefore require a precautional measure. Conclusion: The fuzzy logic model shows higher probability in predicting fire intensity with the simultaneous application of many variables compared with Graham's index.
We propose a new similarity measure based on relative membership function (RMF). In this paper, the RMF is suggested to represent the relativity between fuzzy subsets easily. Since the shape of the RMF is determined according to the values of its parameters, we can easily represent the relativity between fuzzy subsets by adjusting only the values of its parameters. Hence, we can easily reflect the relativity among individuals or cultural differences when we represent the subjectivity by using the fuzzy subsets. In this case, these parameters may be regarded as feature points for determining the structure of fuzzy subset. In the sequel, the degree of similarity between fuzzy subsets can be quickly computed by using the parameters of the RMF. We use Euclidean distance to compute the degree of similarity between fuzzy subsets represented by the RMF. In the meantime, we present a new linguistic approximation method as an application area of the proposed similarity measure and show its numerical example.

A lot of methods are proposed to provide services for object informations in distributed domain to satisfy the recent increase of user-centered services. This paper proposed a method called fuzzy drop manager for the service of reliable distribution application domain objects. The proposed system accesses the domain using replica parameter ci,j and access matrix Z, and evaluates the reference relatedness inside the domain using the relatedness, given by the mapping of intra-domain fuzzy relevance, between fuzzy sets. Objects in the domain generated an $\alpha$-level set according to the reference relatedness obtained by applying $\alpha$-level to extend queries. Simulation results showed that the proposed method has better performance than the other methods.

This talk presents the overview of the author's research and development activities on fuzzy inference hardware. We involved it with two distinct approaches. The first approach is to use application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technology. The fuzzy inference method is directly implemented in silicon. The second approach, which is in its preliminary stage, is to use more conventional microprocessor architecture. Here, we use a quantitative technique used by designer of reduced instruction set computer (RISC) to modify an architecture of a microprocessor. In the ASIC approach, we implemented the most widely used fuzzy inference mechanism directly on silicon. The mechanism is beaded on a max-min compositional rule of inference, and Mandami's method of fuzzy implication. The two VLSI fuzzy inference chips are designed, fabricated, and fully tested. Both used a full-custom CMOS technology. The second and more claborate chip was designed at the University of North Carolina(U C) in cooperation with MCNC. Both VLSI chips had muliple datapaths for rule digital fuzzy inference chips had multiple datapaths for rule evaluation, and they executed multiple fuzzy if-then rules in parallel. The AT & T chip is the first digital fuzzy inference chip in the world. It ran with a 20 MHz clock cycle and achieved an approximately 80.000 Fuzzy Logical inferences Per Second (FLIPS). It stored and executed 16 fuzzy if-then rules. Since it was designed as a proof of concept prototype chip, it had minimal amount of peripheral logic for system integration. UNC/MCNC chip consists of 688,131 transistors of which 476,160 are used for RAM memory. It ran with a 10 MHz clock cycle. The chip has a 3-staged pipeline and initiates a computation of new inference every 64 cycle. This chip achieved an approximately 160,000 FLIPS. The new architecture have the following important improvements from the AT & T chip: Programmable rule set memory (RAM). On-chip fuzzification operation by a table lookup method. On-chip defuzzification operation by a centroid method. Reconfigurable architecture for processing two rule formats. RAM/datapath redundancy for higher yield It can store and execute 51 if-then rule of the following format: IF A and B and C and D Then Do E, and Then Do F. With this format, the chip takes four inputs and produces two outputs. By software reconfiguration, it can store and execute 102 if-then rules of the following simpler format using the same datapath: IF A and B Then Do E. With this format the chip takes two inputs and produces one outputs. We have built two VME-bus board systems based on this chip for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The board is now installed in a robot at ORNL. Researchers uses this board for experiment in autonomous robot navigation. The Fuzzy Logic system board places the Fuzzy chip into a VMEbus environment. High level C language functions hide the operational details of the board from the applications programme . The programmer treats rule memories and fuzzification function memories as local structures passed as parameters to the C functions. ASIC fuzzy inference hardware is extremely fast, but they are limited in generality. Many aspects of the design are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a fuzzy information processor as an application specific processor using a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach was developed by RISC designers. In effect, we are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a specialized RISC processor for fuzzy information processing. As the first step, we measured the possible speed-up of a fuzzy inference program based on if-then rules by an introduction of specialized instructions, i.e., min and max instructions. The minimum and maximum operations are heavily used in fuzzy logic applications as fuzzy intersection and union. We performed measurements using a MIPS R3000 as a base micropro essor. The initial result is encouraging. We can achieve as high as a 2.5 increase in inference speed if the R3000 had min and max instructions. Also, they are useful for speeding up other fuzzy operations such as bounded product and bounded sum. The embedded processor's main task is to control some device or process. It usually runs a single or a embedded processer to create an embedded processor for fuzzy control is very effective. Table I shows the measured speed of the inference by a MIPS R3000 microprocessor, a fictitious MIPS R3000 microprocessor with min and max instructions, and a UNC/MCNC ASIC fuzzy inference chip. The software that used on microprocessors is a simulator of the ASIC chip. The first row is the computation time in seconds of 6000 inferences using 51 rules where each fuzzy set is represented by an array of 64 elements. The second row is the time required to perform a single inference. The last row is the fuzzy logical inferences per second (FLIPS) measured for ach device. There is a large gap in run time between the ASIC and software approaches even if we resort to a specialized fuzzy microprocessor. As for design time and cost, these two approaches represent two extremes. An ASIC approach is extremely expensive. It is, therefore, an important research topic to design a specialized computing architecture for fuzzy applications that falls between these two extremes both in run time and design time/cost. In this paper, an application of fuzzy-neuron reasoning to the control of an activated sludge plant is presented. The activated sludge process is widely used in modern wastewater treatment plants. The operation control of the activated sludge process, however, is difficult due to the following reasons : 1)The complexity of the wastewater components, 2)the change of the wastewater influent, and 3)the adjustment errors in the control process. Because of these reasons, it is difficult to obtain mathematical model that really reflect the relationship between the variables and parameters in the process of wastewater treatment correctively and effectively. In this paper, the activated sludge process(A.S.P.) is modeled by a new fuzzy-neuron network representing nonlinear characteristics. These fuzzy-neurons have fuzzy rules with complementary membership function. Based on the constructed model, graphic simulator on X-window system as a graphic integrated environment is implemented. The efficacy of the proposed control scheme was evaluated and demonstrated by means of the field test.
