  • In this paper presents approaches to the design of a hybrid fuzzy logic proportional plus conventional integral- derivative(fuzzy P+ID) controller in an incremental form. This controller is constructed by using an incremental fuzzy logic controller in place of the proportional term in a conventional PID controller. The PID type controller has been widely used in industrial application due to its simply control structure, easy of design, and inexpensive cost. However, control performance of the PID type controller suffers greatly from high uncertainty and nonlinearity of the system, large disturbances and so on. This paper presents a hybrid fuzzy logic proportional plus conventional integral derivative controller In comparison with a conventional PID controller, only one additional parameter has to be adjusted to tune the Fuzzy P+ID controller. In this case, the stability of a system remains unchanged after the PID controller is replaced by the Fuzzy P+ID controller without modifying the original controller parameters. Finally, the proposed hybrid Fuzzy P+ID controller is applied to BLDC motor drive. Simulation results demonstrated that the control performance of the proposed controller is better than that of the conventional controller.

  • A decrease in the birthrate and aging are progressing in Japan and several countries. In that society, it is important that physically weak persons such as elderly persons are able to take care of themselves. We have been developing exoskeletal robots for human (especially for physically weak persons) motion support. In this study, the controller controls the angular position and impedance of the exoskeltal robot system using multiple fuzzy-neuro controllers based on biological signals that reflect the human subject's intention. Skin surface electromyogram (EMG) signals and the generated wrist force by the human subject during the elbow motion have been used as input information of the controller. Since the activation level of working muscles tends to vary in accordance with the flexion angle of elbow, multiple fuzzy-neuro controllers are applied in the proposed method. The multiple fuzzy-neuro controllers are moderately switched in accordance with the elbow flexion angle. Because of the adaptation ability of the fuzzy-neuro controllers, the exoskeletal robot is flexible enough to deal with biological signal such as EMG. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • Experimental software data capturing the essence of software projects (expressed e.g., in terms of their complexity and development time) have been a subject of intensive modeling. In this study, we introduce a new category of Hybrid Fuzzy Neural Networks (gHFNN) and discuss their comprehensive design methodology. The gHFNN architecture results from highly synergistic linkages between Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNN) and Polynomial Neural Networks (PNN). We develop a rule-based model consisting of a number of "if-then" statements whose antecedents are formed in the input space and linked with the consequents (conclusion pats) formed in the output space. In this framework, FNNs contribute to the formation of the premise part of the overall network structure of the gHFNN. The consequences of the rules are designed with the aid of genetically endowed PNNs. The experiments reported in this study deal with well-known software data such as the NASA dataset. In comparison with the previously discussed approaches, the proposed self-organizing networks are more accurate and yield significant generalization abilities.

  • The conventional quantitative techniques of system analysis are intrinsically unsuited for dealing with humanistic systems. Therefore, the rule based modeling of fuzzy linguistic type has been developed for the analysis of humanistic systems and complex systems and it is very significant for analysis and design of fuzzy logic controller. The activated sludge process is a commonly used method for treating sewage and waste waters. A mathematical tool to build a fuzzy model of the activated sludge process where fuzzy implications and linear reasoning are used is presented in here. A root-mean square error is used as the criterion of the fuzzy model's adequacy to the A.S.P. and the least square method is used for the identification of optimum consequence parameters. A method of modeling of the activated sludge process using its input-output data and simulation results for its application are shown.

  • In the process of simplifying the complex fate of the plant into a binary state, the information loss is inevitable. To minimize the information loss, the quantification of plant safety status has been formulated through the combination of the probability density function arising from the sensor measurement and the membership function representing the expectation of the state of the system. Therefore, in this context, the safety index is introduced in an attempt to quantify the plant status from the perspective of safety. The combination of probability density function and membership function is achieved through the integration of the fuzzy intersection of the two functions, and it often is not a simple task to integrate the fuzzy intersection due to the complexity that is the result of the fuzzy intersection. Therefore, a methodology based on the Algebra of Logic is used to express the fuzzy intersection and the fuzzy union of the arbitrary functions analytically. These exact analytical expressions are then numerically integrated by the application of Monte Carlo method. The benchmark tests for rectangular area and both fuzzy intersection and union of two normal distribution functions have been performed. Lastly, the safety index was determined for the Core Reactivity Control of Yonggwang 3&4 using the presented methodology.

  • In this paper, we propose a new architecture of Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks(FPNN) by means of genetically optimized Fuzzy Polynomial Neuron(FPN) and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization, especially Genetic Algorithms(GAs). The design of the network exploits the extended Group Method of Data Handling(GMDH) with some essential parameters of the network being provided by the designer and kept fixed throughout the overall development process. This restriction may hamper a possibility of producing an optimal architecture of the model. The proposed FPNN gives rise to a structurally optimized network and comes with a substantial level of flexibility in comparison to the one we encounter in conventional FPNNs. It is shown that the proposed genetic algorithms-based Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks is more useful and effective than the existing models for nonlinear process. We experimented with Medical Imaging System(MIS) dataset to evaluate the performance of the proposed model.

  • It is difficult to predict non-stationary or chaotic time series which includes the drift and/or the non-linearity as well as uncertainty. To solve it, we propose an effective prediction method which adopts data preprocessing and multiple model TS fuzzy predictors combined with model selection mechanism. In data preprocessing procedure, the candidates of the optimal difference interval are determined based on the correlation analysis, and corresponding difference data sets are generated in order to use them as predictor input instead of the original ones because the difference data can stabilize the statistical characteristics of those time series and better reveals their implicit properties. Then, TS fuzzy predictors are constructed for multiple model bank, where k-means clustering algorithm is used for fuzzy partition of input space, and the least squares method is applied to parameter identification of fuzzy rules. Among the predictors in the model bank, the one which best minimizes the performance index is selected, and it is used for prediction thereafter. Finally, the error compensation procedure based on correlation analysis is added to improve the prediction accuracy. Some computer simulations are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Case-based reasoning is emerging as a leading methodology for the application of artificial intelligence. CBR is a reasoning methodology that exploits similar experienced solutions, in the form of past cases, to solve new problems. Hybrid model achieves some convergence of the wide proliferation of credit evaluation modeling. As a result, Hybrid model showed that proposed methodology classify more accurately than any of techniques individually do. It is confirmed that proposed methodology predicts significantly better than individual techniques and the other combining methodologies. The objective of the proposed approach is to determines a set of weighting values that can best formalize the match between the input case and the previously stored cases and integrates fuzzy sit concepts into the case indexing and retrieval process. The GA is used to search for the best set of weighting values that are able to promote the association consistency among the cases. The fitness value in this study is defined as the number of old cases whose solutions match the input cases solution. In order to obtain the fitness value, many procedures have to be executed beforehand. Also this study tries to transform financial values into category ones using fuzzy logic approach fur performance of credit evaluation. Fuzzy set theory allows numerical features to be converted into fuzzy terms to simplify the matching process, and allows greater flexibility in the retrieval of candidate cases. Our proposed model is to apply an intelligent system for bankruptcy prediction.

  • Although it is widely used to find an optimum setting of manufacturing process parameters in a variety of engineering fields, the Taguchi method has a difficulty in dealing with multi-response situations in which several response variables should be considered at the same time. For example, electrode wear, surface roughness, and material removal rate are important process response variables in an electrical discharge machining (EDM) process. A simultaneous optimization should be accomplished. Many researches from various disciplines have been conducted for such multi-response optimizations. One of them is a fuzzy logic approach presented by Lin et al. [1]. They showed that two response characteristics are converted into a single performance index based upon fuzzy logic. However, it is pointed out that information regarding relative importance of response variables is not considered in that method. In order to overcome this problem, a desirability function can be adopted, which frequently appears in the statistical literature. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for the multi-response optimization by incorporating fuzzy logic into desirability function. The present method is illustrated by an EDM data of Lin and Lin [2].
