This paper presents the development and validation methods of the FUTURE (FUel cycle analysis Tool for nUcleaR Energy) code, which was developed for a dynamic material flow evaluation and economic analysis of the nuclear fuel cycle. This code enables an evaluation of a nuclear material flow and its economy for diverse nuclear fuel cycles based on a predictable scenario. The most notable virtue of this FUTURE code, which was developed using C# and MICROSOFT SQL DBMS, is that a program user can design a nuclear fuel cycle process easily using a standard process on the canvas screen through a drag-and-drop method. From the user's point of view, this code is very easy to use thanks to its high flexibility. In addition, the new code also enables the maintenance of data integrity by constructing a database environment of the results of the nuclear fuel cycle analyses.

The global restriction on pollutant emissions and the soaring of crude oil price are expected to result in the change of future transportation system. Hydrogen is considered to be the leading candidate as an alternative energy source before other new alternative energy sources emerge. Scientists anticipate that hydrogen fuel gas turbine engine and fuel cell will be the power plant of the aircraft in the near future. To realize the aircraft powered by fuel cell system in the future, the technologies such as fuel cell with higher energy density, compressed gas or liquid storage system of hydrogen fuel, and efficient and lightweight electric motor have to be developed first.
This study addresses the reference spent fuel and its characteristics for developing a geological repository concept. As a disposal capacity of the reference repository system to be developed, spent fuel inventories were projected based on the basis of the Nuclear Energy Plan of the Long-term National Power Program. The reference spent fuel encompassing a variability in characteristics of all existing and future spent fuels of interest was defined. Key parameters in the reference fuel screening processes were the nuclear and mechanical design parameters and the burnup histories for existing spent fuels as of 1996 and for future spent fuels with the more extended burnup the initial enrichment and its expected turnup. The selected reference fuel was characterized in terms of initial enrichment, bumup, dimension, gross weight and age. Also the isotopic composition and the radiological properties are quantitatively identified. This information provided in this study could be used as input for repository system development and performance assessment and applied in fuel material balance evaluation for the various types of back-end fuel cycle studies.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) research is recently actively underway. Especially, fuel cell battery hybrid systems are widely used to overcome the limitations of continuous operation. However, fuel cell systems must be operated in combination with a battery due to their low specific output characteristics. Therefore, a hybrid power system model for UAVs is developed. The rule-based strategy is applied to the model to properly distribute power to batteries and fuel cells. As a result, the designed rule-based power distribution control operates UAVs while maintaining battery state of charge(SOC) at an appropriate level.
Power electronics plays an important role in providing an interface between fuel cells and loads. Furthermore, power electronic converters ensure that the power is reliably and efficiently delivered to the load in the required DC or AC form. In this paper, major types of fuel cells are presented. Basic structures, operating principles, and different applications of fuel cells are described. In addition, current status and future trends in the areas of power electronics for fuel cells are described. In addition, current statue and future trends in the areas of power electronics for fuel cell applications are explained. A review of fuel cell power electronic system topologies and basic requirements are given as well.

In this study, a fuel cell system for future defense unmanned vehicles was designed and validated. A Co/Al2O3-Ni foam catalyst for NaBH4 hydrolysis was characterized using several analytical methods. A NaBH4 hydrogen generation system with the Co/Al2O3-Ni foam catalyst continuously generated hydrogen at elevated reaction temperatures. The fuel cell system with the NaBH4 hydrogen generation system was designed and tested. The performance of the fuel cell system was comparable to that of the fuel cell system using pure hydrogen. Therefore, the fuel cell system with the NaBH4 hydrogen generation system is a suitable power source for future defense unmanned vehicles owing to its easy refueling and simple system.
The safety of metal cask and concrete cask storage technology has been verified by CRIEPI through several research programs on demonstrative testing for the interim storage of spent fuel. The results have been reflected in the safety requirements for dry casks issued by NISA/METI (Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) of the Japanese government. On top of that, spent fuel integrity has been studied by the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES). This paper reviews these research programs. Future issues include the long-term integrity of cask components and high burn-up spent fuel.
This paper provides an overview of the trends and future directions in the development of anode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) using hydrocarbons as fuel, with the aim of enabling a decentralized energy supply. Hydrocarbons (such as natural gas and biogas) offer promising alternatives to traditional energy sources, as their use in SOFCs can help meet the growing demands for energy. We cover several types of materials, including perovskite structures, high-entropy alloys, proton-conducting ceramic materials, anode on-cell catalyst reforming layers, and anode functional layers. In addition, we review the performance and long-term stability of cells based on these anode materials and assess their potential for commercial manufacturing processes. Finally, we present a model for enhancing the applicability of fuel cell-based power generation systems to assist in the realization of the H2 economy as the best practice for enabling distributed energy. Overall, this study highlights the potential of SOFCs to make significant progress toward a sustainable and efficient energy future.
Global sustainable energy needs and carbon neutrality goals make hydrogen a key future energy source. South Korea and Japan lead with proactive hydrogen policies, including South Korea's Hydrogen Law and Japan's strategy updates aiming for a hydrogen-centric society by 2050. A notable advance is the solar thermal chemical water-splitting cycle for green hydrogen production, spotlighted by Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) and Niigata University's joint initiative. This method uses solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, offering a carbon-neutral hydrogen production route. The study focuses on international collaboration in solar energy for thermochemical water-splitting and E-fuel production, highlighting breakthroughs in catalyst and reactor design to enhance solar thermal technology's commercial viability for sustainable fuel production. Collaborations, like ARENA in Australia, target global carbon emission reduction and energy system sustainability, contributing to a cleaner, sustainable energy future.
Production, utilization and related regulation of refuse derived fuel in Korea have been discussed in this paper. Also, the expected future of RDF has been discussed. Although the interest about RDF has been increased continuously , there are many things that must be solved for the development of RDF industry. Compared with other developed country, inadequacy of regulation about RDF and the lack of possible utilization facility make the limitation for the development of RDF industry.
