  • By 2050, the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution currently being discussed will become highly mature and face a turning point in human civilization. Among them, the most innovative technologies will be artificial intelligence, robots, virtual reality and hyper-connected networks. These technologies will transform not only human life but also the appearance of the battlefield. Therefore, in 2050, the Army should concentrate all its capabilities on developing new concept weapons systems based on superintelligence and hyperconnectivity that converge and integrate these technologies.

  • The use of unmanned combat systems is of interest for future battlefield. Advanced techniques are being actively studied to build fully autonomous unmanned systems. However, there are technical, ethical and legal limitations for the fully autonomous unmanned combat systems. In addition, a remote controlled system is necessary so far in order to prepare for situations where fully autonomous unmanned systems fail to function properly. Thus, a procedure of developing operational requirements in system level is proposed and interface requirements of unmanned combat vehicles for remote control are described in this study.

  • The cytoplasm in mammalian cells is a battlefield between the host and invading microbes. Both the living organisms have evolved unique strategies for their survival. The host utilizes a specialized autophagy system, xenophagy, for the clearance of invading pathogens, whereas bacteria secrete proteins to defend and escape from the host xenophagy. Several molecules have been identified and their structural investigation has enabled the comprehension of these mechanisms at the molecular level. In this review, we focus on one example of host autophagy and the other of bacterial defense: the autophagy receptor, NDP52, in conjunction with the sugar receptor, galectin-8, plays a critical role in targeting the autophagy machinery against Salmonella; and the cysteine protease, RavZ secreted by Legionella pneumophila cleaves the LC3-PE on the phagophore membrane. The structure-function relationships of these two examples and the directions of future research will be discussed.

  • In the future, most military activities will be replaced by robots. Because of many dangerous factors in battlefield, reconnaissance should be performed by robot. Reconnaissance robot should be small for not being detected, be light and simple structure for personal portability and overcome unexpected rough terrain for mission completion. In case of small and light robot, it can't get enough friction force for movement. Therefore small reconnaissance robot need jumping function for movement. In this paper we proposed a biologically inspired jumping mechanism. And we adjusted moment and jumping angle by using four bar linkage, especially varying coupler length.

  • KAFASAT is a CubeSat which has a high level mission of testing the possibility of establishing the LEO satellite constellation providing the role of communication nodes and quasi-realtime image recognition of battlefield in accordance with the aspect of future-war-environment. The high level mission is developed using the Pugh selection method, which is one of system engineering tools. In order to accomplish the high level mission objectives and deduce engineering level requirements, system engineering tools such as Analytic Hierarchy Process and Quality Function Deployment are used. The subsystem synthesis in the context of system engineering process is done using a developed integrated design environment. The paper also includes the conceptual design results of the KAFASAT, which can be used as a baseline for upcoming preliminary design.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology that can estimate optimal requirement of attack helicopter Korea army will be operating in future. For estimating optimal requirement, attack helicopter's operation concept, performance, battlefield environment and enemy threat are considered. We use a wargame model, AAsim(Army Aviation simulation), as a analytic simulation model which is used to analyze DOTMLPF and operation in army aviation field. In this paper, we conduct battle experiment for anti armored corps operation which reflects attack helicopter's combat effectiveness very well. As a result of simulation, the destructive rate for enemy armored corps per each attack helicopter can be calculated. In this paper, we propose optimal requirement of attack helicopter using that destructive rate for enemy armored corps.

  • Korean army currently considers the development of the new generation MLRS(Multiple Launcher Rocket System) as a new alternative, which responses on the renovation of the artillery and future battlefield environment. This study suggests that it presents cost-effectiveness of MLRS based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process and Parametric Estimating(PRICE H). According to this study, the cost-effectiveness of new generation MLRS presented that alternative A is 2.30 times and alternative B is 1.70 times, which are better than currently operating M270A1. Therefore, The best acquisition is alternative A that launcher is carried on currently operating 10ton standard truck but final acquisition alternative should be politically decided to consider viability of operator, performance and the latest of equipment.

  • Surveillance and reconnaissance sensor network system is an application system based on ubiquitous sensor network technology. This technique is to avoid accidental close combat, to minimize the consumption of limited military resources and personnel, and to provide battlefield situational awareness information for the unit's future combat missions. In this paper, we have proposed a echelons scale identification scheme based on information obtained from surveillance and reconnaissance sensor network system.
