NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF AN ARC PLASMA IN A DC ELECTRIC FURNACE

  • In order to analyze the heat transfer phenomena in the plasma flames, a mathematical model describing heat and fluid How in an electric arc has been developed and used to predict heat transfer from the arc to the steel bath in a DC Electric Arc Furnace. The arc model takes the separate contributions to the heat transfer from each involved mechanism into account, i.e. radiation, convection and energy transported by electrons. The finite volume method and a SIMPLE algorithm are used for solving the governing MHD equations, i.e., conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy together with the equations describing a standard $k-\varepsilon$ model for turbulence. The model predicts heat transfer for different currents and arc lengths. Finally these calculation results can be used as a useful insight into plasma phenomena of the industrial-scale electric arc furnace. from these results, it can be concluded that higher arc current and longer arc length give high heat transfer.

  • As a part of recent CO2 emission reduction studies in the concrete industry with active use of concrete admixtures with low basic unit of CO2 emission such as blast furnace slag (BFS), basic unit of CO2 emission by SBFS was computed in order to assess CO2 emission by reinforced concrete building with smart blast furnace slag (SBFS). In addition, SBFS concrete was applied to the subject building for assessment of CO2 emission during material production step among construction steps. Life cycle CO2 emission assessment on the subject building was classified into 7cases according to mix ratio of BFS and SBFS.

  • Large single crystals of olivine were grown by using image furnace(floating zone furnace)under controlled partial pressure of oxygen. The transparent crystals have maximum sizes 65mm in length by 7mm in diameter. When partial pressure of oxygen was decreased, the portion of secondary phases in crystals were increased so that it made crystals dark brown. The secondary phases were proved to be solid solution of Mg, Si, and Fe by electron microprobe analysis. Mg was major portion and the rest was minor.

  • The amorphous silicon films deposited by low pressure chemical vapor deposition are crystallized by the various annealing techniques including low-temperature furnace annealing and two-step annealing. Two-step annealing is the combination of furnace annealing at 600 [.deg. C] for 24 h and the sequential furnace annealing at 950 [.deg. C] 1h or the excimer laser annealing. It s found that two-step annealings reduce the in-grain defects significantly without changing the grain boundary structure. The performance of the poly-Si thin film transistors (TFTs) produced by employing the tow-step annealing has been improved significantly compared with those of one-step annealing.   • This paper describes the fuel oil characteristics of mulching waste vinyl by indirect heating emulsion system. For the emulsion experiment of waste vinyl, the system is composed of melting furnace, the 1th pyrolysis furnace, and the 2nd pyrolysis furnace. The mulching waste vinyl is used for the fuel oil characteristics analysis of mulching waste vinyl. The refined oil, gasoline, and diesel oil are extracted and quantified to analysis the fuel oil characteristics. From the results of experiments, it has been shown that the production of fuel oil from mulching waste vinyl is possible using the emulsion system.

  • As a result of the reduction of natural aggregate, most of developed country have been studied the utilization of Blast-furnace Slag(BFS) as aggregate of concrete. bur, in korea there are only basic study about these even though other country are using Blast-furnace Slag production of Ready Mixed Concrete. According, in this study, we carried out fundamental experiments in order to know the material properties of BFS and possibilities of the BFS as fine aggregate of concrete. It is included that analysis concerning material properties of BFS as like specific gravity, absorption. unit weigth, grading including investigation of the surface shape by SEM, also, analysis concerning properties of concrete with BFS as like air-content surface slump. compressive strength .etc.

  • This study has been performed to predict the transient thermal behavior of the plate in indirectly-fired continuous heat treatment furnace. The temperature profiles in the plate are determined solving the transient one-dimensional heat conduction equations. To verify the validity of the present numerical results, the present results obtained from the transient analysis are compared with those of experiments. Extensive parametric investigations are performed to examine the effects of the emissivities of the plate and refractory, plate thickness and velocity, as well as the gas temperature, on the thermal behavior of the plate.

  • Fuel lean reburning method is very attractive way in comparison with conventional reburning method for reducing NOX. Meanwhile, the knowledge of the how flue gas re-circulated, temperature distribution and species concentration is crucial for the design and operation of an effective fuel lean reburning system. For this reason, numerical analysis of fuel lean reburning system is a very important and challenge task. In this work, the effect of fuel lean reburn system on NOX reduction has been experimentally and numerically conducted. Experimental study has been conducted with a 15kW lab scale furnace. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is used as main fuel and reburn fuel. To carry out numerical study, the finite-volume based commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT6.3 was used to simulate the reacting flow in a given laboratory furnace. Steady state, three dimensional analysis performed for turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the furnace.

  • Three dimensional numerical analysis for the turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the walking beam type of a reheat furnace in POSCO has been carried out by the industrial code FLUENT. Computations an based on the conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and species with the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and mixture fraction/PDF(Probability Density Function) approach for the combustion rate. Radiative heat transfer is computed by the discrete ordinates radiation model in combination with the weighted-sum-of-gray-gas model for the absorption coefficient of gas medium. The predicted temperture distribution in the reheat furnace and energy flow fractions are in reasonable agreement with the measurement data.
