  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of microbial flora of using coal fly ash as humidity conditioner during the household garbage composting. The summarized results of microbial flora were as follows:There was no difference of t he seasonal fluctuation of mesophilic and themophilic microorganisms. The population of thermophilic actinomycetes was rapidly increased in winter, but not much changed in spring and summer.Thermophilic and mesophilic fungal flora were increased at the same time, but the population of thermophilic fungal flora was smaller than that of mesophilic. The population of bacteria, actinomycestes and fungi showed not much difference.

  • Increasing soil salinity is one of the global challenges that the agriculture sector in Egypt has been facing; 33% of the cultivated land in Egypt, which includes merely 3% of the entire land area, is already salinized. The present review sheds light on the role of fungal biopriming, a technique in which hydrated seeds are inoculated with beneficial fungal flora, in mitigating the deleterious influence of NaCl tension. Endophytic fungi were recognized to be able to interact with several plant species, markedly contributing to the mitigation of NaCl stress in these plants, such that some plants get impoverished to their absent associated microbes under stressful conditions.

  • Pulmonary fungal infection has been investigated in patients with healed or active pulmonary tuberculosis or other lung diseases by demonstrating serum precipitating antibodies to the various fungal antigens and by isolating the related fungi from sputums or other clinical specimens. Out of 1,192 suspected patients, 405(34.0%) showed precipitin bands on immunodiffusion tests and the related fungi have been demonstrated in sputums or other specimens of 79.5% of them(327) whose specimens had been cultured. Three patients did not have precipitating antibodies to any fungal antigen, but the same fungus was repeatedly isolated from sputums of two patients for over one year of period and from open lung biopsy specimen in the other patient. Most commonly involved species in pulmonary infection were A. fumigatus(70.3%) and C. albicans (at least 23.8%), followed by A. flavus, P. boydii, A. nidulans, etc. Out of fungi isolated from individuals(459), who were apparently not infected with fungi, molds were 66.0% and the rest, yeasts. Most commonly encountered molds were aspergilli(31.7%), followed by penicilli(16.3%), Cladosporium spp.(2.8%), Fusarium spp.(2.2%), etc. C. albicans(16.6%) was of course most common yeast in human sputums and the other species were seen in few.

  • The determination of fungal flora in various kinds of local grains have been carded out in order to obtain an appropriate information of the population of toxigenic fungi in Korean local grains. Results of fungal examination on nine kinds of grain such as soy bean(18 samples), red bean(12 samples), rice(8 samples), kidney bean(8 samples), millet(7 samples), barley(5 samples), malze(5 samples), wheat(4 samples) and sesame(3 samples) were described in this report. 1. Of the 70 various grains, 283 colonies of fungi were isolated. Among the 283 colonies, 262 were possible to identity into 15 genera. 2. Predominant genera of fungi in most local grains were Penicillium sp.(24.39%), Aspergillus sp.(20.49%) and Alternaria sp.(13.43%).

  • The fungal flora decomposing rice straw were investigated all over the soil of Sharkia Province, east of Nile Delta, Egypt, using the nylon net bag technique. Sixty-four straw-decomposing species belonging to 30 genera were isolated by the dilution plate method in ground rice straw-Czapek's agar medium at pH 6. The plates were incubated separately at $5^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C\;and\;45^{\circ}C$, respectively. Twenty nine species belonging to 14 genera were isolated at $5^{\circ}C$. The most frequent genus was Penicillium (seven species), and the next frequent genera were Acremonium (three species), Fusarium (three species), Alternaria, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Mucor, Stachybotrys (two species) and Rhizopus stolonifer. At $25^{\circ}C$, 47 species belonging to 24 genera were isolated. The most frequent genus was Aspergillus (nine species), and the next frequent genera were ranked by Penicillium (five species), Chaetomium (three species), Fusarium (three species). Each of Alternaria, Cladosporium, Mucor, Myrothecium and Trichoderma was represented by two species. At $45^{\circ}C$, 15 species belonging to seven genera were isolated. These were seven species of Aspergillus, two species of Chaetomium and two species of Emericella, while Humicola, Malbranchea, Rhizomucor and Talaromyces were represented by one species respectively. The total counts of fungi the genera, and species per gram of dry straw were significantly affected by incubation temperature and soil analysis (P < 0.05).

  • The Korean sawmills have recently recognized the importance of prevention of fungal discoloration due to increased losses in revenue. Before establishing integrated control strategies of fungal discoloration, more complete knowledge about causal organisms is needed. As a first step, we initiated a through survey of fungi colonizing commercially important softwood(Pinus dens flora, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus radiata) logs and lumber in Korea. In this paper we report results obtained from Japanese red pine(Pinus densiflora) log study. In summer 2000, fungi were isolated from Japanese red pine logs in storage, and identified based on their cultural and morphological characteristics. A total of 595 fungi were isolated, representing 21 genera and 30 species. Mold fungi, mostly Trichoderma species, were the most frequently isolating fungi, representing more than half of all isolates. Dematiaceous fungi represented approximately one fifth of the isolates, and Rhinocladiella atorvirens was the most abundant in all samples. Opiostoma species represented 7% of all isolates from cores planted on malt extract agar(MEA) and the incidence of these species doubled with the addition of streptomycin and cycloheximide to MEA. The results indicate that Japanese red pine sapwood is susceptible to colonization by a variety of fungal species. As a result, control strategies that concentrate on one fungus may have limited success because of interference from competing flora.
