  • To compare the effectiveness of the hemisling, bobath sling, extension-type sling, and the newly designed Modified Triangular Bobath Sling with Distal Support on a hemiplegic shoulder subluxation. Fourteen hemiplegic patients with shoulder subluxation were evaluated by a simple X-ray with and without the slings and the vertical and horizontal distances on the plain AP views were measurement. The newly designed arm sling was compared in terms of the effects of correction with distal support attached with shoulder saddle sling. The arm sling designed for this study was developed for the purpose of maintaining patients hands in a functional position and performing ROM exercise of the shoulder easily, and prevention or correction to shoulder subluxation. The mean values of the vertical and horizontal distance were compared to determine if there was significant difference of function between the new sling and the conventional slings. The new sling provided the patients with good vertical correction of the subluxation(p<0.05) but did not increase the horizontal distance significantly. These results support the effectiveness of a new sling to decrease subluxation in hemiplegia. Further study on the long term effects or complication of the new sling is recommended.

  • This case report describes the effectiveness of cervical corrective exercises in a patient with cervical radiculopathy (CR) who experienced radicular pain, upper limb paresis, and limited functional activity. A 39-year-old male with cervical radiculopathy performed the cervical corrective exercises for reducing pain. Pain intensity, cervical posture, and active range of motion of cervical intersegmental spine motion were measured baseline, after 4 weeks, and after 8 weeks with self-reported questionnaire and radiographs. After 8 weeks of intervention, the patient demonstrated alleviated radicular symptoms, improved neck posture and active range of flexion and extension of the cervical intersegmental spine. Especially in the angle between the cervical vertebra 6 and 7, the angle was changed from $-4.69^{\circ}$ to $3.30^{\circ}$ during resting position after intervention. The present case indicates that the cervical corrective exercises might be a possible treatment to effectively reduce radicular symptoms, improve neck posture, and active cervical intersegmental motion for patient with CR.

  • The propellant has a short shelf-life because of nitrogen oxides that were released from nitrocellulose decomposition. As-received and surface-modified ACFs were applied to remove the nitrogen oxides with intend to extend the shelf-life of propellant. The specific surface area of modified ACFs was slightly decreased but nitrogen function groups such as pyridine, pyridone and pyrrol were created on the surface of ACFs. As a result, the NO removal capacity of the surface-modified ACF by propellant waste increased about twice than that of the as-received ACF. The shelf-life of propellant was extended about 1.25 times by accompanying surface-modified ACF.

  • We have examined the effect on neck-muscle activation of altering whole body posture. A Rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) was trained to produce sinusoidal (0.25 Hz) head tracking movements in the sagittal plane when seated with trunk and head vertical or while standing in the quadrupedal position. Video-fluoroscopic images of cervical vertebral motion, and electromyographic (EMG) responses were recorded simultaneously. Results demonstrated that vertebral motion varied with body posture, occurring synchronously between all joints in the upright position and primarily at skull-$C_1$ when in the quadrupedal position. Muscle EMG activation was significantly greater (P<0.001) in the quadrupedal position than when upright for all muscles except semispinalis cervicis. Peak activation of all the muscles occurred prior to peak head extension in the quadrupedal position, suggesting synchronous activity between muscles. Data suggest that, when upright, muscles were activated in functional groupings defined by their anatomical arrangement. In the quadrupedal position, gravity acting on the horizontally oriented head produced greater activation and a collective response of the muscles.

  • Red ginseng has been considered a functional food, and many studies on red ginseng and the prevention of cancer, hypertension, arteriosclerosis and constipation have been conducted. In this study, white bread dough with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5% red ginseng marc powder was measured by a farinograph, extensograph, amylograph, as well as for pH to evaluate the development time, stability, extensibility, resistance to extension, gelatinization temperature, and maximum viscosity temperature. The ash content of the wheat flour increased with an increasing content of red ginseng marc powder. The gelatinization maximum and the temperature for the gelatinization maximum of the flour-water suspension in the amylograph were not affected by the addition of red ginseng marc powder. The moisture absorption of the wheat flour in the farinograph increased as the content of red ginseng marc powder increased. Also, as the content of red ginseng marc powder increased, dough development time decreased. The extensibility of the dough in the extensograph showed a negative relationship with the amount of red ginseng marc powder added.

  • Dietary approaches using structured lipids, including medium-chain fatty acids and diacylglycerols, have been adopted for the prevention of obesity-induced chronic inflammation. In an extension to previous studies, medium-chain fatty acid-diacylglycerol enriched dietary oil (MCDG) was prepared by interesterification of canola oil and medium-chain fatty acid-triacylglycerols. The consequent MCDG product was applied to RAW264.7 macrophages followed by the assessment of multiple inflammatory responses. Compared with conventionally used canola and olive oil controls, MCDG suppressed macrophage phagocytosis, as assessed by the uptake of microsphere beads. Furthermore, the production of IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$, transcription of COX-2 and iNOS, and expression of CD80 on cell surfaces were downregulated by MCDG in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Subsequently, differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes were evaluated for proinflammatory cytokine production and lipid accumulation. IL-6 production was marginally affected and lipid accumulation was inhibited by MCDG. Taken together, these results suggest that MCDG has potential as an alternative oil for cooking in order to prevent obesity-induced inflammation.

  • Parameterization of a 3D triangular mesh is a fundamental problem in various applications of geometric modeling and computer graphics. There are two major paradigms in mesh parameterization: energy functional minimization and the convex combination approach. In general, the convex combination approach is wifely used because of simple concept and one-to-one mapping. However, the approach has some problems such as high distortion near the boundary and time complexity. Moreover, the stability of the linear system may not be preserved according to the geometric information of the mesh. In this paper, we present an extension of the convex combination approach based on the mean value coordinates, which resolves the drawbacks of the convex combination approach. This may be a more practical solution because it is able to generate a stable linear system in a short time.

  • Soybean curd residue (SCR), known as a major waste product of soybean processing, is the water-insoluble fraction which is removed by filtration during soymilk production. For these reasons, SCR was usually considered as food waste. SCR might have a good potential as a functional food material, value-added processing and utilization. SCR contains high-quality protein and consists of a good source of nutrients, including protein, oil, dietary fiber, minerals, along with un-specified monosaccharides and oligosaccharides. Also, SCR might be a potential source of low cost protein for human consumption. However, SCR could be a source of bacterial contamination when during food processing. This study was aimed to investigate antibacterial capacity of natural product through detecting relationship between SCR and microbial. We isolated five bacterial strains from SCR and elucidated antibacterial activity of nature medicines to extend storage capacity of food made with SCR. Thus, the extract which showed antibacterial effects in Corynebacterium calloonae and Raoultella amithinolytica is a combination of seven kinds of extracts: Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Cudrania tricuspidata, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, blueberry, Acorus gramineus, Ginkgo biloba L., Camellia sinensis. This study suggested that antibacterial activities of natural medicines could be used for extension of storage capacity in SCR-contained food.

  • Robotic motion is designed by the rotation and the translation of multiple joint coordinates in a three-dimensional space. Joint coordinates are generally modeled by homogeneous transform matrix. However, the complexity of three dimensional motions prefers the visualization methods based on simulation environments in which models and generated motions work properly. Many simulation environments have the limitations of usability and functional extension from platform dependency and interpretation of predefined commands. This paper proposes the web-based three dimensional simulation environment toward high user accessibility. Also, it covers the small size web server that is linked with Python script. The non linearities of robot control apply to verify the computing efficiency, the process management, and the extendability of user scripts.
