Photocatalytic Generated Oxygen Species Properties by Fullerene Modified Two-Dimensional MoS2 and Degradation of Ammonia Under Visible Light

  • In this study, photocatalytic degradation of ammonia in petrochemical wastewater is investigated by solar light photocatalysis. Two-dimensional ultra-thin atomic layer structured MoS2 are synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. We examine all prepared samples by means of physical techniques, such as SEM-EDX, HRTEM, FT-IR, BET, XRD, XPS, DRS and PL. And, we use fullerene modified MoS2 nanosheets to enhance the activity of photochemically generated oxygen (PGO) species. Surface area and pore volumes of the MoS2-fullerene samples significantly increase due to the existence of MoS2. And, PGO oxidation of MB, TBA and TMST, causing its concentration in aqueous solution to decrease, is confirmed by the results of PL. The generation of reactive oxygen species is detected through the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). It is found that the photocurrent density and the PGO effect increase in the case with modified fullerene. The experimental results show that this heterogeneous catalyst has a degradation of 88.43% achieved through visible light irradiation. The product for the degradation of NH3 is identified as N2, but not NO2- or NO3-.

  • Temperature difference between two plates occurs when a current is passed though two semi-conductors that are connected each other at two junctions. The current drives a transfer of heat from one junction to the other. In this study, the thermoelectric module based on th "Peltier effect" was made by combing fullerene and polyaniline. Continuous temperature measurements on both surfaces were performed at room temperature($25.4^{\circ}C$) by an infrared non-contact thermometer. The results showed that cool ing effect of $2.2^{\circ}C$ was attained by 30 seconds, after which the effect was continuously vanished mainly due to electro decomposition.

  • 4-Vinylbenzyl maltohexaoside peracetate, 1, was copolymerized with divinylbenzene using the initiator for nitroxide-mediated living radical polymerization, 2, to afford the polystyrene microgel with acetyl maltohexaose, 3. The deacetylation of 3 was achieved by treatment with sodium methoxide in dry 1,4-dioxane to produce the polystyrene microgel with maltohexaose, 4. A good coating property of the polystyrene microgel was combined with an excellent hydrophilic property derived from maltohexaose. In addition, 4 showed the ability to solubilize fullerene in aqueous solution. Therefore, 4 has a potential application as a special coating using functional but incompatible compounds such as fullerene on the surface of various hydrophilic materials.

Preparation of Boron Doped Fullerene Film by a Thermal Evaporation Technique using Argon Plasma Treatment and Its Electrochemical Application

  • Boron doped fullerene $C_{60}$ ($B:C_{60}$) films were prepared by the thermal evaporation of $C_{60}$ powder using argon plasma treatment. The morphology and structural characteristics of the thin films were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and x-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical application of the boron doped fullerene film as a coating layer for silicon anodes in lithium ion batteries was also investigated. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements were applied to the $B:C_{60}$ coated silicon electrodes at a scan rate of $0.05\;mVs^{-1}$. The CV results show that the $B:C_{60}$ coating layer act as a passivation layer with respect to the insertion and extraction of lithium ions into the silicon film electrode.

  • The cleavage of fullerene oxides with several aromatic amines such as 4-nitroaniline, 3-nitroaniline, 4-isopropylaniline in the present of $FeCl_3$ occurred under ultrasonic irradiation in air at $25{\sim}43^{\circ}C$. The aminated fullerenes were confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS and UV-vis spectra.

  • Electrokinetic motion of fullerene ($C_{60}$) particles in liquid crystal (LC) medium under an in-plane electric field has been studied for the application to the electronic paper display. Fullerenes move in the direction of applied electric field due to interaction between the induced dipole moment on $C_{60}$ and external electric field at lower threshold voltages compared to other devices such as QR-LPD (Quick Response Liquid Powder Display) and TBD (Twisting Ball Display). We also confirmed the bistability of fullerene particles in LC medium and the results showed that the 87% and 81% of original reflectance or transmittance of image was retained after 24 hours and 48 hours respectively. Our studies show the possibility that fullerenes can be used for electronic paper display.

Quantum Mechanical Investigations for the Interactions between Fullerene and Encapsulated Waters (풀러렌-물 클러스터의 상호작용에 대한 양자 역학적 이론 연구)

  • The density functional theory (DFT) calculations on $(H_2O)_n@C_{60}$, (n=1-10) complexes have been performed to elucidate hydrogen interaction between fullerene and water clusters. The optimized geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and binding energies are predicted at various levels of theory. The harmonic vibrational frequencies for the molecules considered in this study show all real numbers implying true minima. We also compare the H-bond interaction between $(H_2O)_n$ and $(H_2O)_n@C_{60}$, (n=1-10) clusters.

Preparation and Thermal Performance of Fullerene-Based Lead Salt

  • $C_{60}$ is widely investigated because of its unique structure. But its applications in solid propellant seem to be relatively neglected. $C_{60}$ has more outstanding features than carbon black which is widely used as a catalyst ingredient of solid propellant. To combine the advantages of fullerene and lead salts, another good composite in propellant catalysts, we synthesized a kind of fullerene phenylalanine lead salt (FPL) and explored its thermal performances by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The results show it undergoes four exothermic processes started from 408 K. Combined TGA and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), the decomposition mechanism of FPL was derived by TG-IR and comparing IR spectra of FPL and its residues after burned to $327^{\circ}C$, $376^{\circ}C$ and $424^{\circ}C$, respectively. Effect of FPL on the decomposition characteristic of hexogen (RDX), a type of explosive in propellant, has been investigated using DTA at different heating rate, which shows the decomposition temperatures of the explosive are all reduced by more than 20 K. The corresponding activation energy ($E_a$) is decreased by $30kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$. So FPL has potential application as a combustion catalyst in solid propellant.
