  • In this study, numerical hull form development of a platform supply vessel, a full scale with the overall length of 26.75m, was performed to predict a bare-hull resistance and a large scale of model tests with a 1/10 scaled model were conducted to verify the success of numerical results. Numerical analysis on heave and pitch motion as a function of encounter frequency and ship's speed for the prediction of seakeeping characteristics are also presented. The experiment results of resistance agreed well with numerical analysis. As a result in the motion response characteristics, the heave RAO indicates high values with the range of encounter frequency 1.8~2.0. The Pitch RAO indicates high motion response characteristics at Beaufort scale No. 3 and 4 in rough seas.

  • At present, deep convolution network-based salient object detection (SOD) has achieved impressive performance. However, it is still a challenging problem to make full use of the multi-scale information of the extracted features and which appropriate feature fusion method is adopted to process feature mapping. In this paper, we propose a new adjacency auxiliary network (AANet) based on multi-scale feature fusion for SOD. Firstly, we design the parallel connection feature enhancement module (PFEM) for each layer of feature extraction, which improves the feature density by connecting different dilated convolution branches in parallel, and add channel attention flow to fully extract the context information of features. Then the adjacent layer features with close degree of abstraction but different characteristic properties are fused through the adjacent auxiliary module (AAM) to eliminate the ambiguity and noise of the features. Besides, in order to refine the features effectively to get more accurate object boundaries, we design adjacency decoder (AAM_D) based on adjacency auxiliary module (AAM), which concatenates the features of adjacent layers, extracts their spatial attention, and then combines them with the output of AAM. The outputs of AAM_D features with semantic information and spatial detail obtained from each feature are used as salient prediction maps for multi-level feature joint supervising. Experiment results on six benchmark SOD datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms similar previous methods.

  • This study conducted the experiment of reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) and Formaldehyde concentration by Native plants, Fatsia japonica and Ardisia pusilla. The two plants are advantageous in that they are highly available as they grow wild, and being easy to get. Fatsia japonica is a plant of its wide and large leaf diverged 7 or 8 parts, which is thought to have a high effect of air purification. Ardisia pusilla has a smaller leaf than Fatsia japonica, which is characterized by more leaves and beautiful. Field measurements were performed using Fatsia japonica and Ardisia pusilla which were verified as air-purifying plants in Korea. The effect of reducing the concentration of VOCs and Formaldehyde by plant studied in a full scale mock-up model. The dimensions of the two models were equal. The concentration of Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene, Stylene, Formaldehyde were monitored, since they were known as most toxic materials. The concentration of VOCs was monitored three hours after the plants were placed and three days after the plants were placed. Field measurements were performed in models where the plants were placed and were not. As a result, they had all an effect of reducing pollution. In all cases of experiment of planting and growing volume, the more planting volume, the more excellent the effect. Toluene was more effective in Fatsia japonica and Ardisia pusilla planted, Formaldehyde was more effective in Fatsia japonica planted respectively. In planting and growing and placing experiment, the placement at sunny spot was more effective than that at scattered growing. When Fatsia japonica was placed at sunny spot, the reduction effect of Formaldehyde was the most excellent, and when Ardisia pusilla was placed at sunny spot, the reduction effect of Toluene was the most effective.

  • Shear behaviors of eight dapped ends of four full-scale domestic single-tee slabs were evaluated. The dapped ends with 10cm topping concrete were designed based on live load requirements for the domestic parking lot of m 500kgf/㎡ and for the large market of 1,200 kgf/㎡. All specimens were designed by the ACI 318-99 design. The variations of the experiment were the shape of hanger reinforcements as followings: 1) general PCI design method(currently used in domestic), 2) 90 degree bent-up, 3) 60 degree bent-up. All experiments were conducted with 1.2 m shear span. The results obtained in this study were 1) all specimens fully complied with the shear strength requirements as specified by ACI 318-99 except for one strand bond slip specimen, 2)a specimen with the 60 degree bent up hanger reinforcing detail showed the best shear behaviors under full service and ultimate load, and 3)a specimen with the 90 degree bent up hanger reinforcing detail resulted in the worst shear behaviors.

  • Systematic distortions in perceived 3-D shape were obtained for elliptical and parabolic stereoscopic surfaces viewed at different distances under full and reduced cue conditions. In both conditions of Experiments 1 and 3, elliptical hemi-cylinders a appeared near veridical at the 45 cm viewing distances and flattened up to 74% of veridical at 135 cm. In Experiment 2, under full cue conditions, parabolic hemi-cylinders a appeared stretched to 118% of veridical at 45 cm, near veridical at 90 cm, and flattened to 85% of veridical at 135 cm. Under reduced cue conditions parabolas appeared flatter overall: veridical curvature was obtained at 45 cm viewing distance with flatness increasing to 68% of veridical at 135 cm. Results support a scaling explanation of perceived 3-D shape from disparity and rule out the alternative hypothesis that disparity curvature, an optical invariant, provides information for the direct perception of 3-D s shape.

  • In this study, an experiment was conducted on the Slim Floor system, using a hollow core PC slab, which could reduce the over-all depth of a composite beam. The Slim Floor system is a method used in steel frame multi-story building construction, in which the structural depth of each floor is minimized after incorporating the steel floor beams within the depth of the concrete floor slab. This experimental study focused on the flexural behavior of the partially connected Slim Floor system with asymmetric steel beams encased in hollow core PC slabs. Ten full-scale specimens were constructed and tested in this study, with different steel beam heights, hollow core PC slabs, slab widths, and PC slab bearings. Observations made in line with the experiments indicated that the degree of shear connection without additional shear connection was 0.48-0.98 times more than that of the full shear connection, due to inherent mechanical and chemical bond stress.

  • In Korea, performance-based fire safety designs are being discussed to deal with the various risks of fire in complex and diverse types of structure. However, performance-based fire safety designs are not actively employed because it is difficult to estimate the fire characteristics related to the various factors in buildings. In this study, real scale fire tests were conducted based on fire severity levels and fire loads provided in He New Zealand Building Code, in order to use the results as guidelines and fundamental data for performance-based designs. In the real scale fire tests conducted in a 10MW full-scale calorimeter, wood cribs were placed in a $2.4(L){\times}3.6(W){\times}2.4(H)m$ mock-up of a compartment which had one $0.8(L){\times}2.0(H)$ opening for different fire loads and heating was continued until all of the wood cribs were burned down. The heat release rate started to increase rapidly 90 seconds after the wood cribs caught fire. In the test with a fire load level 1, the maximum heat release rate of 4743.4 kW was reached at 244 second. In the test with fire load level 2, a maximum heat release rate of 5050.9 kW was reached at 497 second. In the test with fire load level 3, a maximum heat release rate of 4446.9 kW was reached at 677 second.

  • In this paper, the contents of the design and development process of the 6U micro-satellite Snipe (SNIPE, national name Toyosat; small scale magnetospheric and Ionospheric plasma experiment ), which was developed to observe the near-global space environment through polarization flight for the first time in Korea, were described. Snipe performs transversal flight to observe the Earth's surrounding space environment in three dimensions, and aims to simultaneously observe the space plasma density and temperature in the ionosphere, as well as temporal changes in the solar magnetic field and electromagnetic waves. In this way, it was developed by dividing it into a test certification model (EQM) and a flight model (FM) to perform the actual mission for at least six months, away from developing a cube satellite for short-term space technology verification or manpower training. Currently, Snipe, which has completed the development of a total of four FM and completed all space environment tests, is scheduled to launch 2023. In this paper, we introduce the design contents and development process of the Snipe satellite body ahead of launch, and hope that it will be a useful reference for the development of 6U-class micro-satellite for full-scale mission in Korea.

  • RC shear walls are frequently used as lateral force-resisting system in building construction because they have sufficient stiffness and strength against damage and collapse. If RC shear walls are properly designed and proportioned, these walls can also behave as ductile flexural members like cantilevered beams. To achieve this goal, the designer should provide adequate strength and deformation capacity of shear walls corresponding to the anticipated deformation level. In this study, the level of demands for deformation of shear walls was investigated using a displacement-based design approach. Also, deformation capacities of shear walls are evaluated through laboratory tests of shear walls with specific transverse confinement widely used in Korea. Four full-scale wall specimens with different wall boundary details and cross-sections were constructed for the experiment. The displacement-based design approach could be used to determine the deformation demands and capacities depending on the aspect ratio, ratio of wall area to floor plan area, flexural reinforcement ratio, and axial load ratio. Also, the specific boundary detailing for shear wall can be applied to enhance the deformation capacity of the shear wall.

  • Full scale HDR containment experiment series pointed out that the previous containment analysis models have a number of shortcomings. One of them is on the calculational model of short term (0~2sec) pressure difference. The pressure differences between subcompartments are dependent on the flow rate, fluid density, head loss coefficient, and flow area ratio. It, however, is not known that any of them is largely attributed to the disagreement of pressure difference between the measured and the calculated values. In this study, the head loss coefficients are expressed with another form to improve the analytic model. The pressure and the pressure difference are evaluated by using COMPARE code with new correlation, and the results show better agreements with experimental values for V.42 test, but overestimate the measured values for V, 43 and underestimate for V.44.
