Equations of motion for a 7 DOF full car model is developed in detail and used for the design of LQR based active suspension system. The frequency response to road disturbance input and the motion of a car passing unequal bumps were used to analyzed the dynamic characteristics of the 7 DOF full car with passive or active suspensions. The resulting linear equations of motion may be usefull in designing other types of active suspension.

Using a quarter car model, an analytic method for performance estimation of a vehicle suspension system with respect to frequency response, RMS response and performance index is presented. From frequency response function, compromization of response performance to the whole frequency range is verified and from RMS response and performance index, sensitivity of ride md handling characteristics are examined. Using a full car model, sweet area(stable ride area) are determined and performance sensitivity is estimated according to the change of feedback gains. In order to esimate the output sensitivity, response we is displayed using a 3-dimensional contour plot. Design data n suggested for optimal design parameter esimation, which maximize the performance of the given suspension system.

The controllers for a full car 7-DOF model with 4 active or semi-active suspension units are designed and evaluated in this research. The control algorithms for suspension systems, such as full state feedback active, full state feedback semi-active, sky-hook active, sky-hook semi-actvie, and on-off suspension systems, are analyzed and evaluated with respect to ride comfort. The vehicle dynamic performances are expressed by response curves to a bump input, performance indices for asphalt road input, and frequency characteristic curves. Heaving, rolling, and pitching inputs are applied to the vehicle dynamic system to evaluate frequency characteristics. The simulation results show that the ride quality of the sky-hook controller approaches that the full state feedback controller more closely in semi-active suspension system than in active suspension system. For the implementation of a vehicle with sky-hook suspension control systems in this paper, 7 velocity sensors are required to measure the states.

Modelling and crashworthiness analysis of simplified vehicle structures with beam element and nonlinear spring element to which axial and bending collapse mecha- nisms are applied are carried out. And on the basis of these analyses, two types of full car modelling and crahworthiness analyses with nonlinear spring and beam element are accomplished. The one is the full car model of which 30% of the structures are modelled with nonlinear spring and beam element, and the other 75% of whole structures. And the results are compared with those of full car analysis with shell element.

A new column type electric power steering system (EPS-TT) is proposed in this study. The remarkable features of EPS-TT are its opto-isolated torque sensor and assist torque control methodology. EPS-TT uses a uni-directional motor and two clutches. Full order and simplified models for EPS-TT are developed to evaluate the EPS-TT. A full car model is also used to investigate the vehicle responses. A PID control logic is designed to control the torque of the assist motor. Various sinusoidal inputs are applied to the system and the resulting performances are analyzed. The results prove that the performances achieved by the EPS-TT are improved compared to those of a conventional EPS-TT across the frequency domain. In addition, it is inexpensive and easy to control the motor. The results of the full order steering system model are similar to those simplified model, but the vehicle responses are slightly different.
The objective of this study was to construct the spring-mass models for the car-to-car frontal impact crash. The SISAME software was utilized to extract the spring-mass models using the data from US-NCAP frontal crash tests. The spring-mass models of a compact car and a midsize car could effectively approximate the crash characteristics for the full frontal barrier impact and the car-to-car frontal impact scenarios. Compared to the barrier crash tests, the dummy injuries of midsize car decreased, while the dummy injuries of compact car increased, under the frontal car-to-car crash circumstances.

In this study, 3 dimensional non-linear race car vehicle model including Chassis, steering and suspension systems were modeled by using Multi-Body Dynamics Simulation Program, DADS 9.5(Dynamic Analysis and Design System),which was used in kinematic and dynamic analysis. A full race car vehicle dynamics model using DADS program was presented and analysis was carried out to estimate the handling characteristics that may be very useful to design a race car in early design stage. The simulation of vehicle handling behavior for step steering input was simulated and compared with different design parameters: torsional stiffness of the front and rear anti roll bars, the motion ratio of the front and rear suspension system, the location of the tie rod joint, in multibody dynamic model. Therefore this simulation model before race car construction in early design step will be helpful for race car designer to save time and limited budget.

According to the developments of automobile industry, the technology to enhance noise, vibration and harshness(NVH) performance has been studying in a point of view of ride comfort and quietness. Especially the use of computer aided engineering(CAE) simulation tools such as finite element(FE) analysis allows engineers to efficiently evaluate NVH performance. This paper presents the method to bulid FE models for full vehicle including engine, transmission. suspension and steering system, also to evaluate vibration performance of full vehicle. The full vehicle model, which is discussed, is correlated with the result of the frequency response measurement in the case of the car shake performance for high speed driving.
This paper suggests the set-up plan of the assessment scope in road noise considering road characteristics with the prediction model of road noise. The RLS90 prediction model with some assumptions is used to establish the assessment scope of road noise. The main contents of the applied assumptions are smooth drive of cars, flat region, location of all noise sources in one lane, drive in design speed, and set-up of assessment scope according to traffic volume and car speed. The information of traffic volume to predict road noise is obtained by the distribution of small cars and full-sized cars in road. In this study, the total traffic volume in road is computed by adding the number of small cars to the conversion number of small cars, which means the number of small cars making the same noise as one full-sized car. The prediction result of road noise with the influence factor of traffic volume, car speed, distance between road and receiver is presented. The resultant assessment scope of road noise is obtained by combining road noise prediction data with the set-up standard of road noise assessment scope.

The monopole theory has long been used to model air-pumped effect from the elastic cavities in car tire. This approach models the change of an air as a piston moving backward and forward on a spring and equates local air movements exactly with the volume changes of the system. Thus, the monopole theory has a restricted domain of applicability due to the usual assumption of a small amplitude acoustic wave equation and acoustic monopole theory. This paper describes an approach to predict the air-pumping noise of a car ave with CFD/Kirchhoff integral method. The type groove is simply modeled as piston-cavity-sliding door geometry and with the aid of CFD technique flow properties in the groove of rolling car tyre are acquired. And these unsteady flow data are used as a air-pumping source in the next Cm calculation of full tyre-road geometry. Acoustic far field is predicted from Kirchhoff integral method by using unsteady flow data in space and time, which is provided by the CFD calculation of full tyre-road domain. This approach can cover the non-linearity of acoustic monopole theory with the aid of using Non-linear governing equation in CFD calculation. The method proposed in this paper is applied to the prediction of air-pumping noise of modeled car tyre and the predicted results are qualitatively compared with the experimental data.
