  • This study was performed to investigate the behavior of vapor phase of fuel mixtures with different piston cavity diameters in a optically accessible engine. The images of vapor phases were measured in the motoring engine using exciplex fluorescence method. The conventional engine was modified as GDI engine with swirl flow. Fuel was injected into atmospheric nitrogen to prevent quenching phenomenon by oxygen. Injection pressure is 5.1MPa. Two dimensional spray fluorescence image of vapor phases was acquired to analyze spray behavior and fuel distribution inside of cylinder. Three injection timings were set at BTDC $180^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$and $60^{\circ}$. With a fuel injection timing of BTDC $60^{\circ}$, fuel-rich mixture was concentrated in near the cavity center. With a fuel injection timing of BTDC $60^{\circ}$, fuel-rich mixture level in the center region was highest in the S-type during the late compression stroke. With a fuel injection timing of BTDC $180^{\circ}$, fuel was not affected in a piston cavity and generally distributed as homogeneous mixture.

  • In the air-fuel control of automotive engine to improve its efficiency, fuel economy and less emissions, conventional control methods using $O_{2}$ sensor or the lean air-fuel ratio sensor provide only open control in rich conditions. Control with a wide range air-fuel sensor makes it possible to employ closed loop control for all engine conditions including rich combustion. With a wide range A/F sensor and A/F transfer functions, a PID control system is constructed which employs an learning scheme. A/F controller is designed which enables to improve the ability of its compensation for sensors and actuators, and its control operation is evaluated by computer simulation.

  • The combustion temperature in gas generator should be kept below around 1,000K to avoid any possible thermal damages to turbine blade by adopting either fuel rich or oxidizer rich combustion. Thus, non-equilibrium chemical reaction dominates in the gas generator. Meanwhile, Kerosene is a compounded fuel mixed with various types of hydrocarbon elements and difficult to model the chemical kinetics. This study focus to model the non-equilibrium chemical reaction of kerosene/LOX with detailed kinetics developed by Dagaut using PSR(Perfectly stirred reactor) assumption. Also, droplet evaporation time is taken into account by calculating for the residence time of droplet and by decoupling reaction temperature from the reactor temperature. In Dagaut’s surrogate model for kerosene, chemical kinetics of kerosene consists of 1592 reaction steps with 207 chemical species. The comparison of calculation results with experimental data could provide very reliable and accurate numbers in the prediction of combustion gas temperature, species fraction and other gas properties.

  • This paper discusses experimental data for the assessment of flow discharging characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors operating at fuel-rich conditions. Combustion tests employing liquid oxygen and kerosene (Jet A-1) were conducted and a discharge coefficient was utilized for defining flow characteristics. A mass flow rate, a pressure, and a temperature were measured to estimate discharge coefficients. Fuel injectors revealed a fixed value of a discharge coefficient regardless of matched LOx injector design, chamber pressure, and mixture ratio. However, oxidizer injectors showed varying discharging coefficients depending on chamber pressure and mixture ratio. Flame structure variations seem to affect flow discharging characteristics of the oxidizer side.

  • It was evaluated that the microstructural and mechanical properties of Ta-bearing 9Cr-0.5Mo-2W ferritic/martensitic experimental steels. All the experimental steels showed the tempered martensitic microstructures, and $M_{23}C_6$ carbides, whose sizes were ranged from 200 to 300 nm, were easily observed at both boundaries of the prior austenite grain and the martensite lath. In addition, a relatively large Nb-rich MX carbonitrides were intermittently detected at the prior austenite grain boundaries, whereas a lot of Vrich MX carbonitrides, whose mean diameter was less than 50 nm, were observed randomly at both boundaries. Ta was mainly incorporated into the V-rich MX carbonitrides rather than the Nb-rich ones and their content was spanned from 5 to 20 at.%. Ta contents within the MX precipitates also increased as the content of Ta increased. Because the Ta addition into the steels would be attributed to the precipitation strengthening, solid solution strengthening and lath width reduction, it was shown that the mechanical properties, including hardness, tensile strength and creep rate of the 9%Cr-0.5Mo-2W steels were improved by the increase of Ta content. Especially, 9Cr-0.5Mo-2W-0.3V-0.05Nb-0.14Ta steel was revealed to be relatively excellent in the application for the SFR fuel cladding.

  • The characteristics of combustion and radiation heat transfer of an oxygen-enhanced diffusion flame was experimentally analyzed. An infrared radiation heat flux gauge was used to measure the thermal radiation of various types of flames with fuel, air and pure oxygen. And the Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) technique was applied to characterize the soot concentrations which mainly contribute to the continuum radiation from flame. The results show that an oxygen-enhanced inverse diffusion flame is very effective in increasing the thermal radiation compared to normal oxygen diffusion flame. This seems to be caused by overlapped heat release rate of double flame sheets formed in inverse flame and generation of higher intermediate soot in fuel rich zone of oxygen-fuel interface, which is desirable to increase continuum radiation. And the oxygen/methane reaction at slight fuel rich condition (ø=2) in oxygen-enhanced inverse flame was found to be more effective to generate the soot with moderate oxygen availability.

  • This study is aimed to study combustion characteristics of low $NO_X$ burner using petroleum cokes as fuel. The petroleum coke, which is produced through the oil refining process, is an attractive fuel in terms of its high heating value and relatively low price. But petroleum coke is a challenging fuel because of its low volatile content, high sulfur and nitrogen content, which give rise to undesirable emission characteristics and low ignitability. The petroleum cokes burner is operated at fuel rich condition, and overfire air are supplied to achieve fuel lean condition. The low $NO_X$ burner is designed to control fuel and air mixing to achieve air staged combustion, in addition secondary and tertiary air are supplied through swirler. Air distribution ratio of triple staged air are optimized experimentally. The result showed that $NO_X$ concentration is lowest when overfire air is used, and the burner function at a fuel rich condition.

  • It is essential to predict thermodynamic properties of combustion gas with respect to a propellant mixture ratio for the development of a gas generator for a liquid rocket engine. The present study shows the temperature measurement of exit combustion gas as a function of a mixture ratio through the series of combustion tests of a fuel-rich gas generator with liquid oxygen and Jet A-1. The measurements of dynamic and static pressures, and combustion gas temperatures allowed the estimation of thermodynamic properties like a specific heat ratio, a gas constant, and a constant pressure specific heat of the combustion gas. The comparison of the experimental results with predictions made by interpolation parameters obtained from the modification of the chemical equilibrium code indicates that the interpolation method calibrated using the temperature measurements can be utilized as an effective tool for the initial design of a fuel-rich gas generator.

  • For the development of a gas generator of a liquid rocket engine, the prediction of thermodynamic properties of combustion gas with respect to a propellant mixture ratio becomes critical. The present study focuses on the temperature measurement of exit combustion gas as a function of a mixture ratio through combustion tests of a fuel-rich gas generator propelled by Lox/Jet A-1. The measurement of combustion dynamic and static pressures allowed indirect estimation of thermodynamic properties like specific heat ratio, gas constant, and constant pressure specific heat. Comparing the results with empirical prediction through an interpolation reveals that the interpolation method calibrated using temperature results can be utilized as an effective tool for the design of a fuel-rich gas generator.
