  • The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the heating performances of the portable air combustion heater using diesel fuel for auxiliary cabin heating of the battery electric vehicle. In order to evaluate the heating performances of the air combustion heater, the heating capacity was calculated by the temperature at inlet and outlet parts of the considered heater and the inner temperature distribution characteristics of the vehicle were measured during 1600 seconds with an interval of 1 second. The theoretical efficiency of the tested heater was calculated by temperature data of the air of supplying and exhausting to the cabin. As the air passed the heat-sink, the air temperature at the end of heat-sink reached to $101.3^{\circ}C$ and the difference of temperature on heat-sink was 67.8%. The average heating capacity of the air combustion heater showed 2.0 kW. After 1800 seconds, the inner temperature of the vehicle cabin was continuously increased. The temperatures of the top side and the bottom side of the car cabin under consideration were increased upto $42.5^{\circ}C$ and $24.3^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the theoretical efficiency of the tested heater was on average 63.7%.

  • Mooring fittings mean various devices and fittings to safely fasten vessels to quays, jetties and sea-floating buoys, etc. They include mooing winches, capstans, chocks, fairleads, guide rollers, bollards, and bitts. Not only the seats and reinforced parts for the installation of fittings but also ropes and chains for mooring and chain stoppers can be also considered. Because of damages to mooring fittings during mooring directly related to large-scale accidents such as the drifting of vessels, mooring fittings with strength appropriate for the physical features of the vessels must be installed. The reinforcement of the vessels on which the mooring fittings are installed must be designed to withstand the loads transferred from the fittings as well. Also mooring fittings with efficient strength should be required because damaged ships lead to sea pollution such as oil or fuel oil spillage. This study has been performed by the Finite Element Method for two aspects of closed chocks which are divided into structure-supporting shapes and working load. In the case of structure-supporting shapes, they have been performed in the field of sheet and bulwark. As for working load, it has been analyzed according to working load direction such as chock's side and below. At first, strength analysis for unique closed chocks has been carried out by using the Finite Element Method, they are applied for the situation when vessels pass by the panama canal. And then the experiment has been done to verify the analyzed date obtained by FEM. The experimental results were found to be similar to the numerical results with up to 16% difference. On the basis of the results obtained, standardization has been carried out by the Finite Element Method for various sizes of closed chocks.

  • High temperature electrolysis is a promising technology to produce massively hydrogen using renewable and nuclear energy. Solid oxide fuel cell materials are candidates as the components of steam electrolysers. However, the polarization characteristics of the typical electrode materials during the electrolysis have not been intensively investigated. In this study, NiO electrode was deposited on YSZ electrolyte by spin coat process and firing at $1300^{\circ}C$. Pt electrode was applied on the other side of the electrolyte to compare the polarization characteristics with those by NiO during electrolysis. The $H_2$ evolution rate was also monitored by measuring the electromotive force of Lambda probe and calculated by thermodynamic consideration. At low current density, Pt showed lower cathodic polarization and thus higher current efficiency than Ni, but the oxidation of Ni into NiO caused the increase of anodic resistance with increasing current density. High overpotential induced high power consumption to produce hydrogen by electrolysis.

  • The importance of energy is growing according to the energy shortage and environmental concerns. Accordingly, in order to solve the problems about the use of fossil fuel, a renewable energy sources are needed. Global renewable energy power industry's position in the renewable energy market becomes important and new technology development is also essential. MG set composed by the induction motor and permanent magnet synchronous generator for simulating a renewable energy source is based on a suitable experiment equipment. The torque generated by applying a voltage to the induction motor in MG set is used as an input of the permanent magnet synchronous generator. In Psim simulation, the characteristics of the induction motor model was formulated and the output torque characteristics of the motor was controlled using the induction motor side inverter, In this paper, the comparison analysis between Psim simulation and the output characteristics of the MG set is performed in order to identify a renewable energy power system more accurately.

  • Since SRC (Short-term Rotation Coppice) such as poplar and willow can be harvested in three years, they are known to be a potential forest biomass as fuel for a power plant. The production system including transplanting and harvesting is, however, necessary to be mechanized because such a biomass should be handled in a massive volumetric size. A pull-type stem-cutting transplanter was developed in the research as the first step to realize the production of SRC. A needle-like transplanting device pushes a stem-cutting into the prepared soil bed by a pneumatic cylinder, and another device firms soil around a stem-cutting transplanted. Since this is an intermittent operation, it was necessary to develop a zero horizontal velocity mechanism which enabled only the transplanting needle part to continue a zero horizontal movement relative to the ground during the transplanting operation even when the tractor kept moving forward. The 2-row transplanter can transplant stem-cuttings at the rate of 6.5 seconds per row without missing a single attempt. The planting depth and distance were well maintained and controlled. Their CVs were between 2.1~3.4% and 0.87~1.7% for the depth and the distance, respectively. Although, the transplanted stem-cuttings tended to lean outward from the back-view and forward from the side view, they were planted within the range of $3^{\circ}$ from the upright position.

  • In this study, the 1/20 reduced-scale experiments using Froude scaling were conducted to investigate the effect of longitudinal ventilation on the variation of burning rate in tunnel fires. The methanol square pool fires with heat release rate ranging from 3.57 kW to 10.95 kW were used. The burning rate of fuel was obtained by measured mass using load cell and temperature distribution were measured by K-type theomocouples in order to investigate smoke movement. The wind tunnel was connected with one side of the tested tunnel, and logitudinal ventilation velocity in the tested tunnel was controlled by power of the wind tunnel. In methanol fire case, the increase in ventilation velocity decreased the turning rate due to the direct cooling of fire plume. For the same dimensionless velocity(V), homing rate decreased as the size of pool fire increased.

  • The assembly of the main system of the KSTAR tokamak has been recently completed, and the preparation for the 1st plasma and test operations is progressed. The fueling system established for these purposes uses only one port placed at the opposite side of the pumping duct, and has a difficulty of attaining a uniform and fast supply of fuel particles to the plasma. At the base operation stage after finishing the test operation, the fueling system must be improved to provide a uniform fueling and a feed-back control in accordance with a high-density tokamak plasma maintained for a long period. As a part for understanding the points to be improved in the fueling system, a Monte Carlo simulation on the gas fueling into the tokamak plasma has been executed. After modeling the vacuum vessel and the plasma of quasi-D shapes as tori of rectangular cross-sections, the influences of the position and the number of the fueling inputs on the particle density distribution for a given pumping probability and mean free path were investigated.

  • Important role of chemical interaction in flame extinction was numerically investigated in downstream interaction among lean(rich) and lean(rich) premixed as well as partially premixed $H_2$-air and CO-air flames. The strain rate varied from 30 to $5917s^{-1}$ until interacting flame could not be sustained anymore. Flame stability diagrams mapping lower and upper limit fuel concentrations for flame extinction as a function of strain rate are presented. Highly stretched interacting flames were survived only within two islands in the flame stability map where partially premixed mixture consisted of rich $H_2$-air flame, extremely lean CO-air flame, and a diffusion flame. Further increase in strain rate finally converges to two points. Appreciable amount of hydrogen in the side of lean $H_2$-air flame also oxidized the CO penetrated from CO-air flame, and this reduced flame speed of the $H_2$-air flame, leading to flame extinction. At extremely high strain rates, interacting flames were survived only by a partially premixed flame such that it consisted of a very rich $H_2$-air flame, an extremely lean CO-air flame, and a diffusion flame. In such a situation, both the weaker $H_2$-air and CO-air flames were parasite on the stronger diffusion flame such that it could lead to flame extinction in the situation of weakening the stronger diffusion flame. Particular concerns are focused on important role of chemical interaction in flame extinction was also discussed in detail.

  • An experimental study was performed for the analysis of frequency-equivalence ratio correlation in the methane-air premixed flame influenced by ultrasonic standing wave. Evolutionary features of the propagating flame were caught by high-speed camera, and the variation of flame-behavior including local velocities was investigated in detail using a post-processing analysis of the high-speed images. It was found that propagation-velocity augmentation of the methane-air premixed flame by the intervention of ultrasonic standing wave was made in leaner mixture, but the velocity diminished when the strength of chemical reaction was saturated around the slightly fuel-rich side of stoichiometry.

  • This study aims to develop and advance the evaluation technology for assessing PHWR safety. For this purpose, the complete loss of AC power or station blackout (SBO) was selected as a target accident scenario and the analysis model to evaluate the plant responses was envisioned into the MARS-KS input model. The model includes the main features of the primary heat transport system with a simplified model for the horizontal fuel channels, the secondary heat transport system including the shell side of steam generators, feedwater and main steam line, and moderator system. A steady state condition was achieved successfully by running the present model to check out the stable convergence of the key parameters. Subsequently, through the SBO transient analyses two cases with and without the coolant leakage via the PHTS pumps were simulated and the behaviors of the major parameters were compared. The sensitivity analysis on the amount of the coolant leakage by varying its flow area was also performed to investigate the effect on the system responses. It is expected that the results of the present study will contribute to upgrading the evaluation technology of the detailed thermal hydraulic analysis on the SBO transient of the operating PHWRs.
