A dynamic simulation study on SCR process in GTL process was carried out in order to find optimum operation conditions for pilot plant operation. Optimum operating conditions for SCR synthesis gas process were determined by changing operation variables such as feed temperature and pressure. It was also assumed that physical properties of reaction medium were governed by RKS (Redlich-Kwong-Soave) equation. The effect of temperature and pressure on synthesis gas process $H_2$/CO ratio were mainly examined. Dynamic simulation results were fed back to feed operation condition for optimizing productivity, especially for appropriate condition to FT (Fischer-Tropsch) synthesis unit.
The object of the paper is to design two PI controllers. One provides the stable target temperature to the steam reforming reactor in 1kW PEMFC system. The other controls burner to operate within a permissible range of temperature. Feedforward control is applied to obtain temperature stability against disturbances such as changes of operating condition resulted from load change. Step response tests show that these controller work well with an error tolerance of $5^{\circ}C$.
Effect of external heating rate on the conversion efficiency for the steam reforming of methanol is investigated numerically considering both heat and mass transfer of the species in a packed bed microreactor. In a results from the numerical simulation, the conversion efficiency of methanol has been obtained for the external heating rate. The axial variation of mole fraction of methanol has been additionally presented for several cases of external heating rates. The results show that for the constant inlet temperature condition the conversion efficiency of methanol increases with external heating rate over the range of operating conditions.
This paper shortly describe the R&D results for developing of 250 kW externally reforming MCFC (Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell) CHP proto type. Conceptual Design and basic design were alredy completed and stack which was adapted new separator and components also prepared for operation and evaluation. In parallel with stack and system development, BOP such as PCS, blower, catalytic combustor and Reformer also designed and fabricated for evaluation. The system will be fabricated by the end of 2008 and operate and evaluate in 2009.
This paper describes an on-going national R&D program for the development of a gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generation system and related R&D activities. The final goal of this program is to develop a 200kW-c1ass gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generation system and achieve high efficiency over $60\%$ (AC/LHV). In the first phase of the development, a sub-scaled 60kW-class hybrid system based on the 50kW-class microturbine and the 5kW SOFC will be developed for the purpose of concept proof of the hybrid system. Core components such as the microturbine and the SOFC system are being developed and parallel preparation for system integration is being carried out. Before the core components are assembled in the final system. operating characteristics of a hybrid system are investigated from a simulated system where a turbocharger (microturbine simulator) and a modified fuel cell burner test facility (fuel cell simulator) are employed. The 60kW demonstration unit will be built up and operated to provide the valuable information for the preparation of the final full scale 200kW hybrid system.
Sr0.92Y0.08TiO3-δ (SYT) was investigated as an alternative anode in humidified CH4 fuel for SOFCs at low temperatures (650 ℃-750 ℃) and compared with the conventional Ni/yttria-stabilized zirconia (Ni/YSZ) anode. The goal of the study was to directly use a hydrocarbon fuel in a SOFC without a reforming process. The cell performance of the SYT anode was relatively low compared with that of the Ni/YSZ anode because of the poor electrochemical catalytic activity of SYT. In the presence of CH4 fuel, however, the cell performance with the SYT anode decreased by 20%, in contrast to the 58% decrease in the case of the Ni/YSZ anode. The severe degradation of cell performance observed with the Ni/YSZ anode was caused by carbon deposition that resulted from methane thermal cracking. Carbon was much less detected in the SYT anode due to the catalytic oxidation. Otherwise, a significant amount of bulk carbon was detected in the Ni/YSZ anode.
Biogas is a renewable fuel from anaerobic digestion of organic matters such as sewage sludge, manure and food waste. Raw biogas consists mainly of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water. Biogas may also contain other impurities such as siloxanes, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons. Efficient power technologies such as fuel cell demand ultra-low concentration of containments in the biogas feed, imposing stringent requirements on fuel purification technology. Biogas is upgraded from pressure swing adsorption after biogas purification process which consists of water, $H_2S$ and siloxane removal. A polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell power plant is designed to operate on reformate produced from upgraded biogas by steam reformer.
In the near future, with the urgent requirement of environmental protection, hydrogen based energy system is essential. However, at the present time, most of the hydrogen is produced by reforming, which still produces carbon dioxide. This study proposes a high-power electrolytic hydrogen production system based on solid oxide electrolysis cell with no harmful emissions to the environment. Besides that, the parametric study and optimization are also carried to examine the effect of individual parameter and their combination on system efficiency. The result shows that the increase in steam conversion rate and hydrogen molar fraction in incoming stream reduces system efficiency because of the fuel heater power increase. Besides, the higher Faraday efficiency does not always result a higher system efficiency.
Model for the dynamic simulation of dynamic behaviors of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is provided. This model is based upon (1) coupled mass and heat transfer characteristics and (2) important chemical reactions such as electrochemical and reforming reaction in high temperature fuel cells such as SOFC. It is found that the thermal inertia of solid materials in SOFC plays an important role to the dynamic behavior of cell temperature. Dynamic characteristics of cell voltage, power and chemical compositions with different levels of load changes are investigated.
A MEMS methanol reformer was fabricated and its performance was evaluated in the present study. Catalytic steam reforming of methanol was selected because the process had been widely applied in macro scale reformers. Conventional Cu/ZnO catalyst that was prepared by co-precipitation method to give the highest coating quality was used. The reactor structure was made by bonding three layers of glass wafers. The internal structure of the wafer was fabricated by the wet-etching process that resulted in a high aspect ratio. The internal surface of the reactor was coated by catalyst and individual wafers were fusion-bonded to form the reactor structure. The internal volume of the microfabricated reactor was $0.3cm^3$ and the reactor produced exhaust gas with hydrogen concentration at 73%. The production rate of hydrogen was 4.16 ml/hr that could generate power of 350 mW in a typical PEM fuel cell.
