  • To evaluate parameters influencing on the dust removal of the High Temperature Filter(HTF) system, a computer simulation of fluid dynamics inside the system had been performed. The results showed that the optimum pulse jet periods were 50ms and 90ms for the 1000mm and 1500mm long filter elements respectively. Dust removal effect was very excellent under the pulse jet pressure of 3 bar. But the distance between the pulse jet nozzle and the venturi of a filter element had no meaningful effect on the performance with the variation from 5mm to 10mm. Compared to the dispersion mode of pulse jet, the collective mode of pulse jet flow was preferable in maintaining the pressure inside the system stable.

  • To reduce fuel consumption, research on the weight reduction of vehicles is being actively carried out. Researchers have typically tried to replace metal materials with composites materials, but these materials did not satisfy the required strength and rigidity of a vehicle. Composites are usually not used because of their high cost. There are incomplete studies on lightweight trucks that transport cargo. Therefore, in this paper, we enhance the lightness and mechanical strength through design optimization of the deck frame for a lightweight truck. For that purpose, the side member and cross member, which are mounted on the lower part of the truck to assure the safety of the vehicle and support the luggage load, were targeted. The result of numerical analysis on the safety of the frame was obtained by changing the shape of each cross-section. To verify the numerical analysis, we compared it with the theoretical value of a cantilever beam. As a result, the suitability of the cross-sectional shapes of each frame was confirmed through numerical analysis.

  • A reference electrode is important for controlling electrochemical reactions. Evaluating properties such as the reduction potential of the elements is necessary to optimize the electrochemical processes in pyroprocessing, especially in a multicomponent environment. In molten chloride systems, which are widely used in pyroprocessing, a reference electrode is made by enclosing the silver wire and molten salt solution containing silver chloride into the membranes. However, owing to the high temperature of the molten salt, the choice of the membrane for the reference electrode is limited. In this study, three types of electroceramic, mullite, Pyrex, and quartz, were compared as reference electrode membranes. They are widely used in molten salt electrochemical processes. The potential measurements between the two reference electrode systems showed that the mullite membrane has potential deviations of approximately 50 mV or less at temperatures higher than 650℃, Pyrex at temperatures lower than 500℃, and quartz at temperatures higher than 800℃. Cyclic voltammograms with different membranes showed a significant potential shift when different membranes were utilized. This research demonstrated the uncertainties of potential measurement by a single membrane and the potential shift that occurs because of the use of different membranes.

  • This paper deals with attitude determination and parameter estimation problems for a lunar module. For this we first derive equations of motion for the lunar module by considering allocation locations (configurations) of reaction thruster and a reaction wheel assembly. The lunar module is assumed as a rigid body. In order to include the effect of fuel sloshing on the dynamics of the lunar module, we model it as a spherical pendulum for a simple analysis. For estimating angular rates and moment of inertia of the module, we employ an extended Kalman filter and the least mean square algorithms, respectively. Finally we construct a dynamical model for the lunar module by combining all these elements.

  • Carbon fiber/epoxy composites are typical brittle materials and have low impact properties. Recently, it is important to investigate impact characteristics of carbon fiber composites because of increasing use as automobile parts and high pressure hydrogen vessels of fuel cell electric vehicles for light weight. In this study, the low velocity impact properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites fabricated by a filament winding method are studied. The low velocity impact properties were measured by performing tests according to ASTM D7136. The low velocity impact simulations were carried out using commercial structural analysis software, Abaqus. The absorbed energy and the delamination shapes were compared between the experimental and simulation results. The numerical analysis method showed that the absorbed energy decreased with the reduced number of cohesive elements in the composite models.

  • Lanthanides such as La, Gd and Ce have recognized as elements of high level radioactive wastes immobilized by forming solid solution with $CaTiO_3$. For easy forming solid solution between $CaTiO_3$and lanthanides, the combustion synthesis process was applied and the powder characteristics and sinterability were investigated. The proper selection of the type and the composition of fuels are important to get the crystalline solid solution of $CaTiO_3$and lanthanides. When glycine or the mixtures of urea and citric acid with stoichiometric composition was used as a fuel, the solid solution of $CaTiO_3$with $La_2O_3$or $Gd_2O_3$or $CeO_2$was produced very well by the combustion process. The combustion synthesized powder seemed to have a good sinterability with the linear shrinkage of more than 25% up to $1500^{\circ}C$, while that of the solid state reacted powder was less than 10% at the same condition.

  • This paper deals with an experimental verification of a temperature-dependent power loss model of a DC/DC converter in severe temperature conditions. The power loss of a DC/DC converter is obtained by summing the losses by the components constituting the converter including switching elements, diodes, inductors, and capacitors. MIL-STD-810F stipulates that any electronic devices must be operable in the temperature ranging from $-50^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. We summarized the temperature-dependent loss models for the converter components. A SEPIC-type converter is designed and built as a target. Using a constant-temperature chamber, a test rig is set up to measure the power loss of the converter. The experimental results confirm the validity of the loss model within 4.5% error. The model can be useful to predict the efficiency of the converter at the operating temperature, and to provide guidelines in order to improve the efficiency.

  • Combustion generated fine particles, defined as those with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 m, have come under increased regulatory scrutiny because of suspected links to adverse human health effects. Transition metals are of particular interest due to the results of a number of studies that have shown cardiopulmonary damage associated with exposure to these elements and their presence in coal, residual fuel oils, sewage sludge, and other combusted fuels and wastes. This lecture will review results from multi-di sciplinary studies being conducted at EPA and elsewhere examining the physical, chemical, and toxicological characteristics of combustion generated particles. The research describes how collaborative work between combustion engineers and health scientists can provide insight on how combustion processes affect particle properties and subsequent health effects as measured by a combination of in-vitro and in-vivo studies using a variety of animal models. The focus of this lecture is on the interdisciplinary approach required to address the problem. Difficulties are discussed. Engineering aspects involved in this approach are described in detail. Physical and chemical characterizations are performed using a variety of analytical approaches including new techniques of x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) deconvolution of these spectra to gather metal speciation information.

  • In this study, the genetic algorithm has been used for the real-time defect diagnosis on the operation of the aircraft gas-turbine engine. The component elements of the gas-turbine engine for consideration of the performance deterioration consist of the compressor, the gas generation turbine and the power turbine. Compared to the on-design point, the teaming data has been increased 200 times in case off-design conditions for the altitude, the flight mach number and the fuel consumption. Therefore, enormous learning time has been required for the satisfied convergence. The optimal division has been proposed for learning time decrease as well as the high accuracy. As results, the RMS errors of the defect diagnosis using the genetic algorithm have been confirmed under 5 %.

  • An electric water pump for engine cooling system has an advantage which particularly in the cold start, the use of the electric water pump saves fuel and leads to a corresponding reduction in emissions. The canned type electric water pump without mechanical sealing elements was selected to meet the requirements for operational reliability and life. However, the electric water pump for internal combustion engine generates much more heat loss than for hybrid electric vehicle since it is operated by the electric power of high current and low voltage. In this study, the fluid flow and thermal characteristics of the canned type electric water pump as an inverter integrated water pump has been investigated under the effects of heat generation. The analysis conditions such as outdoor air temperature of $125^{\circ}C$, water pump speed of 6000 rpm, coolant temperature of $106^{\circ}C$ and coolant flow rate of 120 L/min was used as a standard condition. Therefore, flow fields and temperature distribution inside the water pump were obtained. Also, we checked the feasibility of the canned type for the electric water pump in comparison with the mechanical seal type.
