Development of Power Conditioning System Control Algorithm for the Parallel Operation of High-Power Fuel Cell System (대용량 연료전지 시스템의 병렬운전을 위한 전력변환기 제어 알고리즘 개발)

  • This paper proposes the parallel operation control algorithm of a power conditioning system (PCS) for a distributed Fuel Cell power generation system. A proposed control algorithm is made good a drawback of the conventional control algorithm. The controller must also supervise the total PCS operation while communicating with the fuel cell system controller. Simulation results are presented to performance of a proposed control algorithm for the PCS.

  • This paper presents an overview of environmental evaluation for a photovoltaic-fuel cell hybrid power plant through the Ideal Point approach, which is one of multiobjective decision support systems. Its evaluation is carried out in terms of such tow criteria as land requirement for plant construction and lifetime CO2 emissions, and ten compared with conventional fossil fuel power plants. Fuel cell power system has been proven a viable technology to back up severe PV power fluctuations under inclement weather conditions. Fuel cell power generation, containing small land use, is able to alleviate the heavy burden of large surface requirement of PV power plants. In addition, the PV-fuel cell hybrid power system shows a very little potential for lifetime CO2 emissions.

  • A 5.9kW phosphoric acid fuel cell(PAFC) power generation system that consists of a reformer, a stack, heat exchangers, an automatic data acquisition and control system was designed, fabricated and analyzed. This system which was firstly fabricated in Korea has been operated for 140 hours with an electricity generation of 684kWh. The PAFC generate electricity in the range of 38-52V and 50-160A and has a typical I-V characteristics of a fuel cell. Using the reformed fuel, the system performance is decreased in some degree due to CO content, compared to using the simulated fuel. At steady state operation condition, the total efficency of this system was 45.2%.

  • In this study, a fuel cell system for future defense unmanned vehicles was designed and validated. A Co/Al2O3-Ni foam catalyst for NaBH4 hydrolysis was characterized using several analytical methods. A NaBH4 hydrogen generation system with the Co/Al2O3-Ni foam catalyst continuously generated hydrogen at elevated reaction temperatures. The fuel cell system with the NaBH4 hydrogen generation system was designed and tested. The performance of the fuel cell system was comparable to that of the fuel cell system using pure hydrogen. Therefore, the fuel cell system with the NaBH4 hydrogen generation system is a suitable power source for future defense unmanned vehicles owing to its easy refueling and simple system.

  • Fuel cell systems have witnessed remarkable development in recent years as they offer a clean and efficient alternative for power generation. Testing was conducted to determine the safety performance of a residential fuel cell system when subjected to abnormal operation condition, especially for voltage sag and fuel cut. In case of voltage sag to 198V, its arriving time at rated power had shown a slight lag but there wasn't any noticeable change when operating it between rated voltage(220V) and 10% voltage sag(198V). In case of fuel cut, it also showed stable shut-down characteristics. The test results are being used to develop a new safety evaluation for residential fuel cell system.

  • The cellulose-fed microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a biotechnological process that directly converts lignocellulosic materials to electricity without combustion. In this study, the cellulose-fed, MFC-integrated thermophilic bacterium, Bacillus sp. WK21, with endoglucanase and exoglucanase activities of 1.25 ± 0.08 U/ml and 0.95 ± 0.02 U/ml, respectively, was used to generate electricity at high temperatures. Maximal current densities of 485, 420, and 472 mA/m2 were achieved when carboxymethyl cellulose, avicel cellulose, and cellulose powder, respectively, were used as substrates. Their respective maximal power was 94.09, 70.56, and 89.30 mW/m3. This study demonstrates the value of the novel use of a cellulase-producing thermophilic bacterium as a biocatalyst for electricity generation in a cellulose-fed MFC.

  • The development of fuel cell hybrid power system, as a next generation power system for solving the global warming, has been being made actively progress around passenger vehicles. Also, in case of railway vehicles in unelectrified railway line, the adoption of fuel cell hybrid power system is being studied around well-known manufacturers. This paper introduces both the configuration and the control strategy of fuel cell hybrid power system in order to apply to a light electronic railway vehicle having a repeated driving pattern of acceleration, coasting and deceleration and provides simulation results to evaluate their validity.

  • The fuel cell based auxiliary power unit (APU) is promising for power source of armed vehicles due to its silence and high efficiency. Especially, the on board hydrogen generation and fed to fuel cell system was core technology of this power system. In this study, we analyzed the performance of the Auto thermal reactor (ATR) that produce the hydrogen from the fuel, integrated High temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (HT-PEFC) by Aspen plus software. The fuel was designed as a n-dodecane for analysis of military fuel (JP-8).

  • Fuel Cell (FC) has slow response characteristic for load variation. During a load step, the inverter cannot pull more power from the fuel cell than is currently available so supplemental power must be provide by some sort of energy storage elements. In this paper, hi-directional do-dc converter for FC generation system is proposed to improve load response characteristic. The hi-directional converter interfaces the low voltage battery to the inverter dc link of FC generation system. The converter is based on a active full bridge in the primary side and on a half bridge in the secondary of a high frequency isolation transformer. The complete operating principles and simulation results in presented.

  • Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) power plants are one of most attractive electricity generation systems for the use of biogas to generate high-efficiency ultra-clean power. However, MCFCs are considerably more expensive than comparable conventional electricity generation systems. The commercialization of MCFCs has been delayed more than expected. After being effective in the Kyoto protocol and considerably increasing the fossil price, the attention focused on $CO_2$ regression and renewable energy sources has increased dramatically. In particular, the commercialization and application of MCFC systems fed with biogas have been revived because of the characteristics of $CO_2$ collection and fuel variety of MCFCs. Better economic results of MCFC systems fed with biogas are expected because biogas is a relatively inexpensive fuel compared to liquefied natural gas (LNG). However, the pretreatment cost is added when using anaerobic digester gas (ADG), one of the biogases, as a fuel of MCFC systems because it contains high $H_2S$ and other contaminants, which are harmful sources to the MCFC stack in ADG. Thus, an accurate economic analysis and comparison between MCFCs fed with biogas and LNG are very necessary before the installation of an MCFC system fed with biogas in a plant. In this paper, the economic analysis of an MCFC fed with ADG was carried out for various conditions of electricity and fuel price and compared with the case of an MCFC fed with LNG.
