  • In this paper, a new SEPIC-Flyback converter with a single transformer has been proposed, which is suitable for a fuel cell based power generation system. The proposed converter is superposition of sepic and flyback converter mode. It has outstanding high boosting output voltage, component utilization and high efficiency characteristics under the inherently severe low output voltage of the fuel cell generator. The proposed converter for a full cell generator is described and verified by simulation and experimental result that make used of the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) Generator.

  • In this paper, author proposes to a fuel cell generation system used to fire prevention installation at emergency. The proposed system is used with a power source of fire prevention installation in preparation for breaking of commercial power supply at emergency. A part of most power loss of the fuel cell generation system is power converter. And the major losses of power converter are switching losses of power semiconductor switches used to power conversion. This parer is designed with a high efficiency power converter of non isolated type in order to increase efficiency of fuel cell power system. The controlling switches used in power conversion system are operated with soft switching, which is applied to partial resonant method to reduce switching loss. The result is that the fuel cell power system gets to high efficiency. Some computer simulated results and experimental results are confirmed to the validity of the analytical results.

  • In the near future, with the urgent requirement of environmental protection, hydrogen based energy system is essential. However, at the present time, most of the hydrogen is produced by reforming, which still produces carbon dioxide. This study proposes a high-power electrolytic hydrogen production system based on solid oxide electrolysis cell with no harmful emissions to the environment. Besides that, the parametric study and optimization are also carried to examine the effect of individual parameter and their combination on system efficiency. The result shows that the increase in steam conversion rate and hydrogen molar fraction in incoming stream reduces system efficiency because of the fuel heater power increase. Besides, the higher Faraday efficiency does not always result a higher system efficiency.

  • In this paper, the parallel operation for a FC generation system is introduced and designed in order to increase the capacity for the distributed generation of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. The equipment is the type that is used by parallel operated PEMFC generation systems which have two PEMFC systems, two dc/dc boost converters with shared dc link, and a grid-connected dc/ac inverter for embedded generation. The system requirement for the purpose of parallel operated generation using PEMFC system is also described. Aspects related to the mechanical (MBOP) and electrical (EBOP) component, size, and system complexity of the distributed generation system, it is explained in order to design an optimal distributed generation system using PEMFC. The optimal controller design for the parallel operation of the converter is suggested and informative simulations and experimental results are provided.

  • In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, hydrogen energy is in the spotlight. There is a difficulty in commercialization due to the lack of hydrogen infrastructure. Therefore, a lot of hydrogen should be imported and a method using ammonia is the most useful. In this study, using the mixed gas of hydrogen and nitrogen generated when ammonia is decomposed, the hydrogen separation performance is to be tested. Hydrogen was separated using an electrochemical hydrogen compressor based on a fuel cell and the experiment was conducted by changing the ratio of hydrogen and nitrogen. In addition, the performance was also compared by the difference both the pressure and the membrane.

  • Ammonia is drawing attention as carbon free fuel due to its ease of storage and transportation compared to hydrogen. This study suggests ammonia fueled solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system with electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC)-based recirculation. Performance of electrochemical hydrogen pump is based on the experimental data under varying hydrogen and nitrogen concentration. As a result, the suggested system shows 62.04% net electrical efficiency. The efficiency is 10.33% point higher compared to simple standalone SOFC system (51.71%), but 0.02% point lower compared to blower-based recirculation system (62.06%). Further improvement in the EHC-based SOFC recirculation system can be achieved with EHC performance improvement.

  • To obtain higher power efficiency of Residential Power Generation system(RPG), it is needed to operate system on optimized stoichiometric ratios of fuel and air. Stoichiometric ratios of fuel/air are closely related to efficiency of stack, reformer and power consumption of Balance Of Plant(BOP). In this paper, optimizing stoichiometric ratios of fuel/air are conducted through systematic experiments and modeling. Based on fundamental principles and experimental data, constraints are chosen. By implementing these optimum values of stoichiometric ratios, power efficiency of the system could be maximized.

  • PEM Fuel cell system was designed and constructed to use as a power source of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) in the present study. Sodium borohydride was selected as a hydrogen source and was decomposed by catalytic hydrolysis reaction. Fuel cell system consists of a fuel cell stack, a hydrogen generation system(HGS), and power management system(PMS). HGS was composed of a catalytic reactor, micropump, fuel cartridge, and separator. Hybrid power system between lithium-polymer battery and fuel cell was developed. The fuel cell system was integrated and packaged into a blended wing-body UAV. Energy density of the total system was 1,000 $W{\cdot}hr/kg$ and high endurance more than 5 hours was accomplished in the ground tests.

  • Fuel cells are direct current (DC) power generators. They generate electricity through an electrochemical process that converts the energy stored in a fuel directly into electricity. Fuel cells have many benefits, which produce no particulate matter, nitrogen or sulfur oxides. And they have few moving parts and produce little or no noise. When fueled by hydrogen, they yield only heat and water as byproducts. Their wide application can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and foreign sources of petroleum. This paper is studied on a high efficiency power conditioning system (PCS) applied to the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) generation system. This paper is designed to a novel PCS circuit topology of high efficiency. Some experimental results of the proposed PCS is confirmed to the validity of the analytical results.
