  • The production of $^{14}C$ occurs in the Moderator(MOD), Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS), Annulus Gas System(AGS) and Fuel in the CANDU reactor. Among the four systems, The MOD system is the largest contributor to $^{14}C$ production(approximately 94.8%). $^{14}C$ is distributed of $^{14}CO_2$, $H_2^{14}CO_3$, $H^{14}{CO_3}^-$ and $^{14}{CO_3}^{2-}$ species as a function of the pH of water. Of these species, $H_2^{14}CO_3$ and $H^{14}{CO_3}^-$ form are predominant because the pH of MOD system is > 5. In this paper, adsorption-desorption characteristics of bicarbonate ion (${HCO_3}^-$) by IRN 150 resin was investigated. ${HCO_3}^-$ ion existed in neutral condition(app. pH 7)was reacted with ion exchange resin (IRN-150) and saturated with it. Then $NaNO_3$ and $Na_3PO_4$ solutions selected as extraction materials were used to make an investigation into feasibility of ${HCO_3}^-$ extraction from resin saturated with ${HCO_3}^-$. Desorption of $CO^{2+}$ and $Cs^+$ ion by $Na^+$ ion was not occurred, and desorption of ${HCO_3}^-$ ion by ${NO_3}^-$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ was occurred slowly. Also, the status of ion exchange which is used in Wolsong NPPs and generation of spent resin yearly were surveyed.

  • In this study, The TRITGO code was introduced, which can predict the amount of tritium production, it's transport, removal, distribution and the level of contamination for the produced hydrogen by the tritium on the VHTR (very high temperature gas cooled reactor). The TRITGO code was improved so that the permeation to the IS Iodine Sulfide) loop for producing the hydrogen can be simulated. The contamination level of the produced hydrogen by the tritium was predicted by the improved code for the VHTR with 600MW thermal power. The contamination level for the produced hydrogen by tritium was predicted as 0.055 Bq/$H_2-g$. This level is three order of lower than the regulation value of 56 Bq/$H_2-g$ from Japan. From this study, the following results were obtained. it is important that the fuel coating (SiC layer) should be kept intact to prevent the tritium from releasing. Also it is necessary that the level of impurity such as 3He and Li in the helium coolant and the reflector consisting of the graphite should be kept as low as possible. It was found that the capacity of the purification system for filtering the impurities directly from the coolant will be the important design parameter.

  • Alkali metal compounds existed in original coal or sorbents are exhausted as vapor or small particle at the outlet of combustor when operating PFBC power plant. These compounds can be removed with dust removal equipment, but total generation efficiency will be decreased because of lower operating temperature of dust removal equipment. Alkali metal contained in vapor phase is initially deposited onto turbine blade results in serious corrosion. The concentration of alkali vapor in the PFBC flue gas is 20∼40 ppm which is dependent on mineral characteristics and composition as well as operating condition of PFBC. However, the allowance limit of alkali metal vapor is assigned as less than 50 ppb for gas turbine when coal or oil is used as fuel. Therefore, alkali metal vapor in PFBC or IGCC process should be removed by solid sorbents to prevent corrosion of turbine blade and improve plant efficiency. In the present investigation, powder of Bauxite, Kaolinite and Limestone is used in the preparation of cylinder-type pellet which is inserted into the pressurized alkali removal reactor for the alkali absorption experiment. Experimental results showed that the alkali removal efficiency in the order of Bauxite, Kaolinite and Limestone. Alkali vapor removal efficiency is related with reaction temperature, porosity of pellet and alkali vapor concentration of flue gas.

  • Methodologies of NEWTRIT model, NRC model and AIRDOS-EPA model, which are off-site dose assessment models for regulatory compliance from routine releases of tritium into the environment, were investigated. Using the domestic data, if available, the predictive results of the models were compared. Among them, recently developed NEWTRIT model considers only doses from organically bounded tritium (OBT) due to environmental releases of tritiated water (HTO) . A total dose from all exposure pathways predicted from AIRDOS-EPA model was 1.03 and 2.46 times higher than that from NEWTRIT model and NRC model, respectively. From above result, readers should not have an understanding that a predictive dose from NRC model may be underestimated compared with a realistic dose. It is because of that both mathematical models and corresponding parameter values for regulatory compliance are based on the conservative assumptions. For a dose by food consumption predicted from NEWTRIT model, the contribution of OBT was nearly equivalent to that of HTO due to relatively high consumption of grains in Korean. Although a total dose predicted from NEWTRIT model is similar to that from AIRDOS-EPA model, NEIIfTRIT model may be have a meaning in the understanding of phenomena for the behavior of HTO released into the environment.

  • It was intended in this study to investigate the effects of various parameters on the chemical reaction or mass transfer yield in a tubular-type nuclear waste treatment equipment. Since such equipments, as a tubular reactor, multistage solvent extractor, and adsorption column, accompany chemical reaction or mass transfer along the fluid-flowing direction, mathematical modeling for each equipment was carried out first. Then their behaviors of the chemical reaction or mass transfer were predicted through computer simulations. The inherent major parameters for each equipment were chosen and their sensitivities. affecting the reaction or mass transfer yield were analyzed. For the tubular reactor, the effects of axial diffusion coefficient and reaction rate constant on the reaction yield were investigated. As for the multistage solvent extractor, the backmixing of continuous phase and the distribution coefficient between fluid and solvent were considered as the major parameters affecting the extraction yield as well as concentration profiles throughout the axial direction of the extractor. For the adsorption column, the equilibrium constant between fluid and adsorbent surface, and the overall mass transfer coefficient between the two phases were taken as the major factors that affect the adsorption rate.

  • The recovery of Zr from Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) cladding hulls was demonstrated to investigate the effect of the oxidation process on the reaction rate of the chlorination reaction. In chlorination reaction experiments performed for 6 h, where reaction products were collected every 2 h, it was observed that a significant decrease in the reaction rate was caused by the oxidation process ($500^{\circ}C$, 10 h under an air atmosphere) within the reaction period of 0 - 2 h. The amount of reaction residue increased from 0.95 to 1.65wt% of initial weights in the fresh and Zry-500-10 (Zry-4 hulls oxidized at $500^{\circ}C$ for 10 h under an air atmosphere) hulls, respectively. The purity of the recovered Zr was identical at 99.61wt% for the fresh Zry-4 and Zry-500-10 hulls. Quantitative analysis of the chlorination reaction rate was performed by varying the reaction time from 0.5 to 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 h. The fitting results showed that the relationship between weight loss and reaction time can be interpreted by a linear line with a slope of 23.35wt%/h for the fresh Zry-4 case, while two linear lines were necessary to fit the results of Zry-500-10. In addition, the slope values were 17.12 and 27.16wt%/h for (0 - 20) and (20 - 100)wt% loss regions, respectively.

  • Recently the importance and interest for the microbes has been increased because several important results for the effects of microbes on the radioactive waste disposal have been published continuously. In this study, research status and major results on the various roles and effects of microbes in the radioactive waste disposal have been investigated. We investigated and summarized the roles and major results of microbes in a multi-barrier system consisting of an engineered barrier and a natural barrier which is considered in radioactive waste disposal systems. For the engineered barrier, we discussed about the effects of microbes on the corrosion of a waste container and investigated the survival possibility and roles of microbes in a compacted bentonite buffer. For the natural barrier, the roles of microbes present in groundwaters and rocks were discussed and summarized with major results from natural analogue studies. Furthermore, we investigated and summarized the roles and various interactions processes of microbes and their effects on the radionuclide migration and retardation including recent research status. Therefore, it is expected that the effects and roles of microbes on the radioactive waste disposal can be rigorously evaluated if further researches are carried out for a long-term behavior of the disposal system in the deep geological environments and for the effects of microbes on the radionuclide migration through geological media.

  • Wolsong Low- and Intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) disposal center has two different types of disposal facilities and interacts with the neighboring Wolsong nuclear power plant. These situations impose a high level of complexity which requires in-depth understanding of phenomena in the safety assessment of the disposal facility. In this context, multidimensional radionuclide transport model and hydraulic performance assessment model should be developed to identify more realistic performance of the complex system and reduce unnecessary conservatism in the conventional performance assessment models developed for the $1^{st}$ stage underground disposal. In addition, the advanced performance assessment model is required to calculate many cases to treat uncertainties or study parameter importance. To fulfill the requirements, this study introduces the development of two-dimensional integrated near-field performance assessment model combining near-field hydraulic performance assessment model and radionuclide transport model for the $2^{nd}$ stage near-surface disposal. The hydraulic and radionuclide transport behaviors were evaluated by PORFLOW and GoldSim. GoldSim radionuclide transport model was verified through benchmark calculations with PORFLOW radionuclide transport model. GoldSim model was shown to be computationally efficient and provided the better understanding of the radionuclide transport behavior than conventional model.

  • The applicability of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([$C_nmim$] [$Tf_2N$]), was investigated for the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) from nitric acid using n-octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutyl carbamoylmethyl phosphine oxide (CMPO) and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) as extractants. The distribution ratios of Am(III) and Eu(III) in CMPO-TBP/[$C_nmim$][$Tf_2N$] were measured as a function of various parameters such as the concentrations of nitric acid, CMPO, and TBP. The results were compared with those obtained in CMPO-TBP/n-dodecane (n-DD). With comparable concentrations of the extractants, the distribution ratios obtained with RTILs were much higher than those obtained with n-DD. It was observed that the extraction efficiency was less for Eu(III) than for Am(III). The extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) decreased with increases in the feed acidity for all three RTILs. The results suggest that the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) by CMPO in RTILs from nitric acid proceeds through the cation-exchange mechanism. The distribution ratios of Am(III) and Eu(III) increased with increases in the concentration of CMPO for all three RTILs. A linear regression analysis of the extraction data resulted in a straight line with a slope of about 3, suggesting the involvement of 3 molecules of CMPO during the extraction process.

  • A Bayesian approach was introduced to improve the belief of prior distributions of input parameters for the probabilistic safety assessment of radioactive waste repository. A GoldSim-based module was developed using the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm and implemented through GSTSPA (GoldSim Total System Performance Assessment), a GoldSim template for generic/site-specific safety assessment of the radioactive repository system. In this study, sequential Bayesian updating of prior distributions was comprehensively explained and used as a basis to conduct a reliable safety assessment of the repository. The prior distribution to three sequential posterior distributions for several selected parameters associated with nuclide transport in the fractured rock medium was updated with assumed likelihood functions. The process was demonstrated through a probabilistic safety assessment of the conceptual repository for illustrative purposes. Through this study, it was shown that insufficient observed data could enhance the belief of prior distributions for input parameter values commonly available, which are usually uncertain. This is particularly applicable for nuclide behavior in and around the repository system, which typically exhibited a long time span and wide modeling domain.
