Mechanical behavior of a fuel stack was studied by the orthotropic material model. The fuel stack is mainly composed of bipolar plate (BP), gasket, end plate, membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA), and gas diffusion layer (GDL). Each component is fastened with a suitable pressure. It is very important to maintain a suitable contact pressure of BP, because it affects the efficiency of the fuel cell. This study compared mechanical behavior of various fastening types of the fuel cell stack. Bar, band, and modified band fastening type are used. The band fastening type showed that it reduces total volume of the cell, but it does not improve the contact pressure distribution of each BP. The modified band fastening type was designed by considering the deformations of band fastening type, and it showed a good enhancement of contact pressure distribution.

Recently, estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission has continuously emerged as an important global issue. This study compares various statistical methods for estimation of fuel consumption, which is necessary for calculation of GHG emission in road transportation sector. Existing methods have focused on using merely transportation fuel supply or distance traveled for calculation of fuel consumption. Estimates of GHG emission based on fuel supply, however, cannot reflect various vehicle types or model year. This study suggests and compares, from statistical point of view, several methods, which can be applied to estimate fuel consumption of each vehicle, by combining distance traveled and fuel efficiency (mileage), and total fuel consumption of all vehicles. It also suggests practical measures that can reflect vehicle types and model year to suggested methods for future research.

This study shows the summary of the economic performance of excess electricity conversion to hydrogen as well as methane and returned conversion to electricity using a fuel cell. The methane production process has been examined in a previous study. Here, this study focuses on the conversion of methane to electricity. As a part of this study, capital expenditure (CAPEX) is estimated under various sized plants (0.3, 3, 9, and 30 MW). The study shows a method for economic optimization of electricity generation using a fuel cell. The CAPEX and operating expenditure (OPEX) as well as the feed cost are used to calculate the discounted cash flow. Then the levelized cost of returned electricity (LCORE) is estimated from the discounted cash flow. This study found the LCORE value was ¢10.2/kWh electricity when a 9 MW electricity generating fuel cell was used. A methane production plant size of 1,500 Nm3/hr, a methane production cost of $11.47/mcf, a storage cost of $1/mcf, and a fuel cell efficiency of 54% were used as a baseline. A sensitivity analysis was performed by varying the storage cost, fuel cell efficiency, and excess electricity cost by ±20%, and fuel cell efficiency was found as the most dominating parameter in terms of the LCORE sensitivity. Therefore, for the best cost-performance, fuel cell manufacturing and efficiency need to be carefully evaluated. This study provides a general guideline for cost performance comparison with LCORE.

In this paper, the method of controlling velocity between joining vehicles at the point of bottleneck using information and communications technology of WAVE method based V2V and V2I are proposed for the driving with high fuel efficiency. Using the derived fuel-efficiency comparative analysis model, it was shown that the proposed method's fuel efficiency is better than traffic light method demanding periodically vehicle's stop. Also, this method provides the derivation algorithm for deceleration and acceleration for controlling velocity between vehicles approaching bottleneck area.

Recently, as the supply of residential polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) increases, the durability and lifetime of the PEMFC system are becoming important. The related studies have been mainly focused on the durability and lifetime of materials while the research on the durability and maintenance of the system level is insufficient. In this paper, a model-based fault detection method is developed considering an air supply system that is dominant to the system performance and efficiency. A commercial 1 kW residential fuel cell system is built, and experiments are conducted under various operation loads and states (normal, 6 faults). From the experimental data, nominal models and residuals are generated. With the residual pattern obtained from real-time data, the detection and classification of various faults can be possible. The technical importance of this paper is to minimize extra sensor installation by using the empirical model rather than a complex mathematical model, and to decrease the number of models by using the applicable model at three loads. Finally, the model-based fault detection method for the air supply system of a PEMFC is established and is expected to be applicable to other subsystems.

The purpose of this research is to identify factors affecting consumer's brand preference toward environment-friendly products like electric vehicles in Bangkok, Thailand. The researcher conducted the study based on a quantitative approach and adapted a nonprobability sampling as a convenience sampling method. The data were collected from 400 respondents living in Bangkok, who are 18 years old and above, with significant knowledge of electric vehicles. This study adapted the Structural Equation Model (SEM) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to examine the model accuracy, reliability and verification influence of various variables. The results revealed that social influence has significant effect on environment concern as well as a positive effect on attitude. The initial significance of environment concern leads to a positive effect on fuel efficiency, followed by brand preference. Lastly, attitude has a significant effect on brand preference as attitude of consumers toward environment-friendly products affects the encouragement of brand preference, which largely depends on individual opinion. From an environmental concern, the researchers identified fuel efficiency and attitude having a positive and significant effect on brand preference toward environment-friendly products for electric vehicles. The authors also found that environmental concern and social influences on green purchasing behavior were significantly interrelated.

Maritime transportation is going to transfer to alternative fuels as a result of the worldwide demands toward decarbonization and tougher maritime emissions regulations. Methanol is considered as a potential marine fuel, which has the ability to reduce SOx and CO2 emissions, reduce climate change effects, and achieve the objective of green shipping. This work proposes and combines the innovative combination system of direct methanol solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), gas turbines (GT), and organic Rankine cycles (ORC) for maritime vessels. The system's primary power source is the SOFC, while the GT and PEMFC use the waste heat from the SOFC to generate useful power and improve the system's ability to use waste heat. Each component's thermodynamics model and the combined system's model are established and examined. The multigeneration system's energy and exergy efficiency are 76.2% and 30.3%, respectively. When compared to a SOFC stand-alone system, the energy efficiency of the GT and PEMFC system is increased by 19.2%. The use of PEMFC linked SOFC has significant efficiency when a ship is being started or maneuvered and a quick response from the power and propulsion plant is required.

Fishing efficiency of a trawl vessel can be enhanced by increasing the swept area per unit time, which can be attained either by increasing the mouth size of the net, or by increasing the towing speed. To improve fishing and fuel efficiency of trawl vessels targeting fishes of greater mobility, in which the towing speed is more critical in determining fishing efficiency, we conducted a series of model tests to evaluate the performance of the newly-designed nozzle propeller before installing it in a trawl vessel to verify its towing speed and fuel efficiency in the sea. By conducting further model tests in the experimental basin, we redesigned the propeller of stern trawler to improve the resistance and propulsion performance. Through actual fishing operations, we evaluated the improvement in fuel and fishing efficiency by installing the new nozzle propeller. The trawling speed increased by 0.6kts at the same engine power (RPM), while the engine margin increased by more than 20%. The increased towing speed by installing the redesigned propeller is expected to enhance fishing performance through increasing the number of hauling- and casting operations per unit times, while shortening the towing duration. Analysis of the Catch-Per-Unit-Effort (CPUE) data indicated that the mean CPUE of trawl fishery increased from 3.04kg/m in year 2007 to 6.15kg/m in year 2008, confirming enhanced fishing efficiency by adopting the redesigned propeller.

Cracking ammonia inside solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack is a compact and simple way. To prevent sharp temperature fluctuation and increase cell efficiency, the decomposition reaction should be spread on whole cell area. This leading to a question that, how does anode thickness affect the conversion rate of ammonia and the cell voltage? Since the 0D model of SOFC is useful for system level simulation, how accurate is it to use equilibrium solver for internal ammonia cracking reaction? The 1D model of ammonia fed SOFC was used to simulate the diffusion and reaction of ammonia inside the anode electrode, then the partial pressure of hydrogen and steam at triple phase boundary was used for cell voltage calculation. The result shows that, the ammonia conversion rate increases and reaches saturated value as anode thickness increase, and the saturated thickness is bigger for lower operating temperature. The similar cell voltage between 1D and 0D models can be reached with NH3 conversion rate above 90%. The 0D model and 1D model of SOFC showed similar conversion rate at temperature over 750℃.

Hybrid propulsion systems provide many advantages in terms of stable operation and safety. However, classical hybrid rocket motors have lower fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency compared to solid propellant rocket motor. Accordingly, the recent research efforts are focused on the improvement of engine efficiency and regressionrate in the hybrid rocket engine. The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes and the flame structure in the hybrid rocket engine. The turbulent combustion is represented by the flamelet model and Low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$turbulent model is employed to reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect. Numerical results suggest that the present approach is capable of realistically simulating the combustion characteristics of the hybrid rocket engines.
