  • Although the number of registered cars in South Korea is above 21million and one family has about 1.07 cars, there is no national standard for automobile reference fuel in South Korea. Reference fuel is the fuel used for certificating vehicle performance, emissions and fuel economy. Now, domestic market fuels are used as reference fuel. However, the quality of domestic market fuel is constantly changing by seasonal and fuel manufacturers. It may effect vehicle performance, emissions and fuel efficiency test result. On this study, market fuel quality was monitored and reference fuel standard(draft) was set by reflecting market fuel monitoring result. Reference fuel standard(draft) was applied to GDI and MPI engine. As a result, the difference of fuel economy between fuels meeting the reference fuel standards(draft) was reduced to 1.1% while the difference of fuel economy between market fuels was 3.8%.

  • Exhausting fossil fuel and increasing concern of air pollution have brought on the change of the focus of developing new vehicles from performance to fuel economy and emission. The gasoline engines adopting the naturally aspirated way use the throttle-body for engine load control. Therefore, its pumping loss increases more than that of the diesel engine, and also mostly operating in a partial load condition has bad influence on fuel economy and emission. In these days, the continuous variable valve timing system and variable induction system are adopted in order to improve fuel consumption and emission. In this study, we optimize the runner length and operate region of variable induction system to simulataneously improve the performance, fuel economy, and emission of gasoline engine with employing GT-Power as a CAE tool for engine analysis and PIAnO as PIDO tool for process integration and design optimization.

  • EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) is an attractive means of improving the fuel economy of spark ignition engines, as it offers the benefits of charge dilution (lower pumping and cooling losses) while allowing stoichiometric fuelling to be retained for applications using the three-way catalysts. However, the occurrence of excessive cyclic variation with high EGR normally prevents substantial fuel economy improvements from being achieved in practice. Therefore, the optimum EGR rate in Gasoline-Hybrid engine should be carefully determined in order to achieve low fuel consumption and low exhaust emission. In this study, 2 liters gasoline engine with E-EGR system was used to investigate the effects of EGR on fuel economy, combustion stability, engine performance and exhaust emissions. EGR tolerance with load variation was found to be more sensitive than with rpm variation. With optimal EGR rates, the fuel consumption was improved by 5.5% while a combustion stability was guaranteed.

  • In the present study, the influence of operating conditions on fuel economy for hybrid electric vehicle was analyzed. In order to accomplish this, vehicle speed, engine speed, battery current and voltage, SOC (state of charge),motor speed and torque, generator speed and torque, engine coolant temperature etc. were measured in real time. The tests were carried out under different driving cycles which are urban and highway cycles, KOREA CITY cycle and on-road driving, and also under various operating conditions such as different initial SOC, with or without regenerative braking etc.. Generally, conventional gasoline engines show a poor fuel economy at stop and go driving, because braking energy is wasted and the engine is operated in low thermal efficiency regions. However, in case of hybrid vehicles, higher fuel economy can be obtained because of utilizing the maximum thermal efficiency regions of engine, idling stop of engine, and regenerative braking etc..

  • Because of their longer operating times and larger size relative to conventional fans, the cooling fans mounted in buses consume larger amounts of energy. Most of the cooling fans mounted in a bus are connected to the engine by a viscous clutch. A viscous cooling fan's speed is determined by its fluid temperature, which is affected by the air flow through the radiator. The fan does not react immediately to the coolant temperature and in doing so causes unnecessary energy consumption. Therefore, the fuel economy of buses using viscous fans can be improved by changing to an electric cooling fan design, which can be actively controlled. In addition, electric power consumption is increased by using electric cooling fans. Thus, when electric fans are applied in conjunction with the alternator management system (AMS), the fuel economy is further enhanced. In this study, simulations were performed to predict coolant temperature and cooling fan speeds. Simulations were performed for both viscous and electric cooling fans, and power consumption was calculated. Additionally, fuel economy was calculated applying both the alternator management system and the electric cooling fan.

  • Generally, the fuel economy of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is effected by the size of each component. In this study the fuel economy for HEV of our own making is evaluated using backward simulator, where dynamic programming is applied. In a competition, the vehicle is running through the road course that includes many speed bumps and steep grade. Therefore, the new driving cycle including road grade is developed for the simulation. The backward simulator is also developed through modeling each component. A performance map of engine and motor for component sizing is made from the existing engine map and motor map adapted to the HEV of our own making. For optimal component sizing, the feasible region is defined by restricting the power range of power sources. Optimal component size for best fuel economy is obtained within the feasible region through the backward simulation.

  • It was measured engine power, specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions to analyze fuel economy between LNG dual fuel vehicle and base diesel one. The tested LNG dual fuel engine is converted from diesel engine having 12 liter heavy duty class. The power of LNG dual fuel engine is 5% lower than diesel one and the engine efficiency is also lower than diesel case. However the exhaust emission of diesel engine such as PM, NOx, CO and $CO_2$ showed higher than that of LNG duel fuel case except NMHC component. And economical analysis were carried out two cases for an aspect of fuel economy and environmental benefit. As a result, LNG dual fuel vehicle gives some economic benefit to whom both business party and public side respectively though considering the subsidy and price discount for diesel.

  • The demand for eco-friendly and higher fuel economy vehicles has helped develop eco-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrid vehicles. In a hybrid vehicle, the change in the battery charge after driving should be added to the fuel consumption as the equivalent fuel usage based on its own characteristics. Thus, the fuel efficiency of a hybrid vehicle cannot be improved simply by increasing the battery capacity. In this study, I attempt to improve the total fuel economy of a hybrid vehicle, including the equivalent fuel consumption, by modeling a fuel cell hybrid vehicle using Matlab Simulink, analyzing the usage zone of the fuel cell with the existing control strategy, and optimizing the power distribution of the battery and fuel cell in the main usage zone of the fuel cell.

  • The vehicle fuel economy is very important issue in the view of global warming. This paper proposes the three fuel economy improvement algorithms which predict the velocity using altitude data of the positions in front of vehicle and estimates their performances. The proposed 3 algorithms are WMGA(Weighted Mean Gradient Angle), RAADE I, II(Reacceleration After Deacceleration I, II). This research extracts the distance and altitude data from received GPS data and calculates gradient angle and road load for each section. The velocity profile according to proposed algorithms is made for Youngdong highway of 213km. And the test vehicle runs along this highway and fuel economy is measured. RAADE II of proposed algorithms showed better performance by 3.571% in comparison to the conventional CVELCONT3.
