The focus of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for investigating the dynamic performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The model in this work is based on physical laws having clear significance in replicating the fuel cell system and can easily be used to set up different operational strategies. Simulation results display the transient behavior of the voltage within each single cell, and also within a number of such single cells combined into a fuel cell stack system. A linear as well as a nonlinear analysis of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell system(PEMFC) has been discussed in order to present a complete and comprehensive view of this kind of modeling. Also, a comparison of the two kinds of analysis has been performed. Finally, the various characteristics of the fuel cell system are plotted in order to help us understand its dynamic behavior. Results indicate that there is a considerable amount of error in the modeling process if we use a linear model of the fuel cell. Thus, the nonlinearities present in the fuel cell system should be taken into account in order to obtain a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of the fuel cell system.

The electromagnetic characteristics of FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) are much different from the existing combustion engine cars as well as hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and pure electric vehicles due to the high voltage/current generated by a fuel cell stack which uses a compressed hydrogen gas reacted with oxygen. To operate fuel cell stack efficiently, BOP (Balance of Plant) which is consisted of many motors in water pump, air blower, and hydrogen recycling pump as well as inverters for these motors is essential. Furthermore, there are also electric systems for entertainment, information, and vehicle control such as navigation, broadcasting, vehicle dynamic control systems, and so on. Since these systems are connected by high voltage or general cables, EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) analysis for high voltage and general cable of FCEV is the most important element to prevent the possible electric functional safety errors. In this paper, electromagnetic fields by high voltage and general cables for FCEVs is studied. From numerical analysis results, total time harmonic electromagnetic field strength from high voltage and general cables have difference of 13~16 dB due to ground effect by impedance matching. The EMI results of FECV at 10 m distance shows difference of 41 dB at 30 MHz and 54 dB at 230 MHz compared with only general cable routing.

This study proposes a hybrid marine power system combining dual-fuel generators, a fuel cell, and Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB). Rigorous verification and validation of the dynamic modelling and integration of the system are conducted. A case study for the application of the hybrid propulsion system to a passenger ship is conducted to examine its time-variant behaviour. A comprehensive model of the reversible and irreversible capacity degradation of the VRFB stack unit is proposed and validated. The capacity retention of the VRFB stack is simulated by being integrated within the hybrid propulsion system. Reversible degradation of the VRFB stack is precisely predicted and rehabilitated based on the predefined operational schedule, while the irreversible portion is retained until the affected components are replaced. Consequently, the advantages of the VRFB system as an on-board ESS are demonstrated through the application of a hybrid propulsion system for liner shipping with fixed routes.
The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is an electrochemical device to convert chemical energy of a fuel into electricity at temperatures from about 600 to $1000^{\circ}C$. The SOFC offers certain advantages over lower temperature fuel cells, notably its ability to use CO as a fuel rather than being poisoned by it, and high grade exhaust heat for combined heat and power, or combined cycle gas turbine applications. This paper reviews the operating principle, materials for different cell and stack components, cell designs, and applications of SOFCs. Among all designs of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), the most progress has been achieved with the tubular design. However, the electrical resistance of tubular SOFCs is high, and specific power output $(W/cm^2)$ and volumetric power density $(W/cm^3)$ low. Planar SOFCs, in contrast, are capable of achieving very high power densities.

The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the heat transfer rate for evaluating the thermal performances of the stack thermal system using the commercial software. In order to perform this, the cooling performances of the stack system for fuel cell electric vehicle were tested under both driving road conditions including the general driving road and uphill driving road and operating conditions with and without of the air conditioning system. The heat transfer rate of the stack radiator for the stack system was increased with the increase of the inlet air flow velocity. The heat transfer rate of the stack radiator increased by 105.3% at the coolant flow rate of 20 l/min and 221.3% at the coolant flow rate of 120 l/min with the increase of the air flow velocity from 2 m/s to 10 m/s. $9.45^{\circ}C$ of inlet coolant temperature of the stack radiator at the severe driving condition of the slope of 8% and velocity of 50 km/h showed higher 85.3% than $5.1^{\circ}C$ of inlet coolant temperature at the general driving condition of the slope of 0% and velocity of 120 km/h. In addition, as the fuel cell electric vehicle with the air conditioning system operation was driving under severe uphill driving condition, the radiator coolant temperature for a stable stack operation could be exceeded over $70^{\circ}C$.

The sensing of a stack coolant deficiency is very important in that cooling performance of a fuel cell, overheating prevention of a stack or coolant heater. This paper explains the performance comparison between the coolant contact/noncontact level sensors and coolant deficiency sensing logic using the pressure sensor in a stagnant or circulating flow. Throughout the comparison, the pressure sensor is more suitable than the other sensors in terms of the precision, fast response, sensing frequency. After the experiment, the pressure sensor is equipped to an FCEV(Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) to verify sensing definitely. There was no miss-sensing using pressure sensor while FCEV runs in the conditions of the paved road and cross country road.

Optimal design and proper operation are important to get aimed output power of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. An air cooling fuel cell stack is widely used in sub kW PEMFC systems. The purpose of this study is to analyze operating conditions affecting the performance of the air cooling PEMFC which is designed for portable application. In portable applications, air cooling stack is difficult to maintain well balanced operating conditions. The importart parameters are the relative humidity, the temperature of the stack, the utilization of reactant gas and so on. in this study, a 500W air cooling PEMFC was fabricated and tested to evaluate the design performance and to determine optimal operating conditions. Moreover, basic modeling also is carried out. These results can be used 3s design criteria and optimal operating conditions for portable PEMFCs

This study performed the numerical analysis of the internal flow phenomena of 1 kWe-class solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks with internal manifold type and planar cells using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, Star-CCM+. In particular, the locations where the turbulent phenomena occur inside the SOFC stack were investigated. In addition, the laminar flow model and the standard k-ε turbulent model were used to calculate the SOFC stack, separately. And, the calculation results of both laminar and turbulent models were compared. The calculation results showed that turbulent phenomena occurred mainly in the cathode flow. Especially, the turbulent phenomena were found in the cathode inlet/outlet region, and local turbulence occurred in the end plate near the inlet pipe.
