  • In this paper, a hybrid photovoltaic fuel-cell generation system employing an electrolyzer for hydrogen generation and battery for storage purpose is designed and simulated. The system is applicable for remote areas or isolated DC loads. Control strategy has been considered to achieve permanent power supply to the load via the photovoltaic/battery or the fuel cell based on the power available from the sun. MATLAB and SIMULINK have been used for the simulation work. A sensitivity analysis is conducted for various load level based on availability of solar radiation.

  • Performance analysis of a solid oxide fuel cell/micro gas turbine hybrid system is conducted at design-point and part-load conditions and its results are discussed in this study. With detailed considerations of the heat and mass transfer phenomena along various flow streams of the SOFC, the analysis based on a quasi-2D model reasonably predicts its performance at the design-point operating conditions. In case of part-load operations, performance of the hybrid system to three different operation modes(fuel only control, speed control, and VIGV control) is compared. It is found that the simultaneous control of both supplied fuel and air to the system with a variable MGT rotational speed mode is the optimum choice for the high performance operation. And then, the dynamic characteristics of a solid oxide fuel cell are briefly introduced.

  • We have developed 1 kW-class PEMFC-battery hybrid system independently powering to the building, through the process of system design, current load characteristics analysis, power system configuration for demonstration site and performance evaluation. In order to use the fuel cell and battery as the hybrid type, a control technology for the charging/discharging decision and charging speed of the battery is required rather than using fuel cell. Also output power distribution between PEMFC and the battery is a core of energy management technology. It is confirmed that it is possible to supply independently 1kW powering the building to ensure optimal energy management through the power control experiment of the hybrid system.

  • A hybrid system that uses a parallel combination of wind turbine and fuel cell is modeled. Wind energy source is characterized by its intermittent and variable nature. The output power generated by the fuel cell is stable and can be properly controlled. Therefore, fuel cell system can be added to the wind turbine system for the purpose of ensuring continuous power flow. Fuel cell helps to compensate power and regulate the frequency in power system. Simulation results show the effect of the hybrid system on power regulation. The excess power generated by the wind turbine was directed to an electrolyzer to generate hydrogen and the power deficit was compensated by the fuel cell.

  • The fuel cell market is expected to grow rapidly. Therefore, it is necessary to scale up fuel cells for buildings, power generation, and ships. A multi-stack system can be an effective way to expand the capacity of a fuel cell. Multi-stack fuel cell systems are better than single-stack systems in terms of efficiency, reliability, durability and maintenance. In this research, we developed a residential fuel cell stack and system model that generates electricity using the fuel cell-photovoltaic hybrid system. The efficiency and hydrogen consumption of the fuel cell system were calculated according to the three proposed power distribution methods (equivalent, Daisy-chain, and optimal method). As a result, the optimal power distribution method increases the efficiency of the fuel cell system and reduces hydrogen consumption. The more frequently the multi-stack fuel cell system is exposed to lower power levels, the greater the effectiveness of the optimal power distribution method.

  • Renewable energy hybrid systems look into the process of choosing the finest arrangement of components and their sizing with suitable operation approach to deliver effective, consistent and cost effective energy source. This paper presents hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) solar photovoltaic, downdraft biomass gasifier, and fuel cell based generation system. HRES electrical power to supply the electrical load demand of academic research building sited in $23^{\circ}12^{\prime}N$ latitude and $77^{\circ}24^{\prime}E$ longitude, India. Fuzzy logic programming discover the most effective capital and replacement value on components of HRES. The cause regarding fuzzy logic rule usage on HOMER pro (Hybrid optimization model for multiple energy resources) software program finds the optimum performance of HRES. HRES is designed as well as simulated to average energy demand 56.52 kWh/day with a peak energy demand 4.4 kW. The results shows the fuel cell and battery bank are the most significant modules of the HRES to meet load demand at late night and early morning hours. The total power generation of HRES is 23,794 kWh/year to the supply of the load demand is 20,631 kWh/year with 0% capacity shortage.

  • In the present study, the simulation on the annual performance evaluation of a renewable energy systems with fuel cell driven compound source hybrid heat pump systems is applied to the heating and cooling of large community building. The large community building has the economical advantage to apply heat pump cooling and heating systems the long period operation. If air and ground source hybrid heat pump systems are combined, COP of the system can be increased largely. Fuel cell driven compound source hybrid heat pump system can reduced the fuel cost as well as thermal storage tank sharply.

  • The development of fuel cell hybrid power system, as a next generation power system to promote clean energy which will mitigate the continued global warming, has demonstratd a significant progress in passenger vehicle applications. Also, in case of railway vehicles in non-electrified railway lines, the adoption of fuel cell hybrid power system is being studied among well-known manufacturers. This paper introduces both the configuration and the control strategy of fuel cell hybrid power system to apply to a light electronic railway vehicle having a repeated driving pattern of acceleration, coasting and deceleration. The simulation results demonstrate the viability of the proposed power system design and its control strategy.

  • Residential fuel cell cogeneration systems have gained much interest due to its high efficiency. In the present study, we have performed numerical simulation of residential fuel cell cogeneration system which includes a fuel cell/battery hybrid system. The cogeneration system consists of 1kW PEFC, two 60Ah batteries, inverter/converter and reformer. Several empirical models have been employed for respective components to improve the accuracy of the simulations. The load varies seasonally. The present simulations can successfully predict the characteristics of the hybrid cogeneration system and thus it can be utilized for establishing an optimal operating strategy of the system.
