Revision work on the Codex Classification of Foods and Animal Feeds was undertaken in 2007 and presently, revisions for most food groups have been completed. For vegetables, the work was conducted during 2014-2017, and the final draft revision was adopted by the $40^{th}$ Codex Alimentarius Commission (2017). Here, the revised classification of vegetable commodities is introduced in order to be utilized in various food-related fields, in particular, food safety regulation. The revised classification is briefly summarized as follows: Codex classified vegetables into 10 groups (Group 009-018): bulb vegetables (Group 009), Brassica vegetables (except Brassica leafy vegetables) (Group 010), fruiting vegetables, Cucurbits (Group 011), fruiting vegetables, other than Cucurbits (Group 012), leafy vegetables (including Brassica leafy vegetables) (Group 013), legume vegetables (Group 014), pulses (Group 015), root and tuber vegetables (Group 016), stalk and stem vegetables (Group 017) and edible fungi (Group 018). The groups are further divided into a total of 33 subgroups. In the Classification, 430 different commodity codes are assigned to vegetable commodities. Meanwhile, Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) does not include potatoes, beans and mushrooms within a vegetable group. In addition, the MFDS divides one vegetable group into six subgroups including flowerhead Brassicas, leafy vegetables, stalk and stem vegetables, root and tuber vegetables, fruiting vegetables, Cucurbits, and fruiting vegetables other than Cucurbits. Therefore, care is needed in using the Codex Classification.

In order to monitor the residual pesticides in environment friendly agricultural commodities, fruits and fruiting vegetables. Twenty-five agricultural commodities were collected twice in May and August 2011 from nine environment friendly agricultural commodities-selling supermarkets and retail stores located in eight major cities in Korea. The number of each agricultural commodity collected, 555 samples in total, was 152 organic agricultural products, 202 pesticide-free agricultural products and 201 low-pesticide agricultural products. Pesticide residues in samples were analyzed by multiresidue method for 245 pesticides using a GC-ECD/NPD and an HPLC-DAD/FLD and the peaks suspected as pesticides were identified with a GC/MSD. As a result of pesticide residue analysis, three pesticides, bifenthrin, EPN and chlorpyrifos, were detected from four samples including apple, representing a detection rate of 0.72%. The residue levels of the four pesticide-detected samples were less than their maximum residue limits (MRLs) but one pesticide EPN detected from pear exceeded its legible criterion of one twentieth MRL. Estimated daily intakes of the pesticides detected from fruits and fruiting vegetables were less than 0.76% of their maximum permissible intake.

Chemical properties of soils and mineral contents in plants grown at seventy one regions located in southern part of Korea were surveyed to obtain the basic information for sustainable management of plastic film house soils. The averaged soil chemical properties showed optimum levels in pH, organic matter, available boron, manganese, zinc contents, whereas available phosphate and exchangeable rations were highly accumulated. Available phosphate showed highly positive correlation with continuous cropping period. The contents of phosphate, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the top soils were ranged from 912(Pusan)~1.796mg (Masan) ; $1.52(Pusan){\sim}2.93cmol^+$(Sunchon) ; $7.44(Masan){\sim}18.58cmol^+$(Changweon) ; $2.82(Changnyong){\sim}6.24cmol^+/kg$(Changweon), respectively. There were high levels of phosphorus and potassium in the leaves of plastic film house plants of pepper, cucumber, pimento, chrysanthemum, and carnation. And calcium and magnesium were more than two fold high in fruiting vegetables than flowering plants showing antagonistic utilization against potassium.

This study was conducted to evaluate the safety of 208 types of residue pesticides on 150 dried agricultural products in Ulsan. The pesticide residues were detected using GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, GC/ECD, GC/NPD, and LC/PDA. The detection rate was 19.3% (29 of 150 samples), and 28 types of pesticides were detected. Two of the 29 pesticide residues exceeded the maximum residue limit (MRL). Difenoconazole was detected in Ulleungdo aster, and chlorothalonil and chlorpyrifos were detected in chili pepper leaves. In the vegetable group, the frequency of pesticide residues was found to be the highest in dried leafy vegetables, followed by dried fruiting vegetables other than cucurbit vegetables, and then dried stalk and stem vegetables. The pesticide types detected in the commercial dried agricultural products were fungicide (60%), insecticide (23.8%), and acaricide (16.3%). In the validation study, the values of limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), coefficient of determination (R2), and recovery rate were in the range of 0.0001-0.0409 mg/kg, 0.0003-0.1241 mg/kg, 0.994-0.999, and 81.58-116.79%, respectively. The ratio of estimated daily intake (EDI)/acceptable daily intake (ADI) was 0.00002-0.31395%.
Although biological metabolism in soil is very important for evaluating the soil properties, most of researches have concerned mainly about physical and chemical sides. In this study, biological characteristics were examined to demonstrate the biota in the plastic film house soils. Contents of organic matter and phosphate in soil were increased with cultivation period. ECs of soil cultivated spinach and melon were $3.59dS\;m^{-1}$ and $3.46dS\;m^{-1}$ respectively: these values were higher than that of rose and flower, which were $1.23dS\;m^{-1}$ and $1.32dS\;m^{-1}$ respectively. The population of fluorescent Pseudomonas strains of the soil cultivated flowers: $113.8{\times}10^4{\sim}129.7{\times}10^4cfu\;g^{-1}$ was higher than that of leafy vegetables: $40.7{\times}10^4{\sim}97.9{\times}10^4cfu\;g^{-1}$ and fruiting vegetables: $25.0{\times}10^4{\sim}91.7{\times}10^4cfu\;g^{-1}$. However the number of Fusarium strains of the soil cultivated with flowers: $3.8{\times}10^2{\sim}4.0{\times}10^2cfu\;g^{-1}$ was lower than that of leafy vegetables: $4.3{\times}10^2{\sim}16.3{\times}10^2cfu\;g^{-1}$ and fruiting vegetables: $7.6{\times}10^2{\sim}30.0{\times}10^2cfu\;g^{-1}$. In relation to the cultivation period, the habitation density of aerobic bacteria, mesophilic Bacillus, thermophilic Bacillus, and fluorescent Pseudomonas strains was the highest in the soil cultivated over 11 years, but diversity index showed negative correlation with cultivation period. Microbial biomass C in these soils had positive correlation with each number of microorganisms including aerobic bacteria, actinomycetes, and strains of mesophilic Bacillus as well as the total number of these microorganisms.

The purpose of this study was to investigate 253 kinds of pesticide residues in 58 commercial dried agricultural products in Seoul. The determinations of the pesticide residues were performed using multiresidue methods and were carried out by a gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorus detector (GC-NPD), an electron capture detector ($GC-{\mu}ECD$), a mass spectrometry detector (GC-MSD) and high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV), and a fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). The pesticide residue detection rate in the commercial dried agricultural products was 24.1% (14 of 58 samples). Twelve pesticide residues without maximum residue limits (MRLs) were detected. In the vegetable groups, the frequency of pesticide residues was found to be in the increasing order of dried fruiting vegetables > dried leafy vegetables > dried stalk and stem vegetables. The pesticides used on dried red pepper in the dried fruiting vegetables were varied (7 kinds) and numerous (4 of 8 samples). The pesticide types detected in the commercial dried agricultural products were in the order of pyrethroid > organochloride > organophosphorus and insecticide > fungicide > herbicide ${\cdot}$ nematicide. The primary pyrethroid pesticide detected was cypermethrin. According to the producing areas of products, large numbers of pesticide residues were found in the order of Korea, China, North Korea, USA, and Vietnam.
This study was performed to investigate the contaminated status of endocrine disruptor-suspected pesticides in agricultural products distributed in northern Seoul in 20l0. We analyzed 33 kinds of pesticides by multiresidue analysis method in 3,081 samples. Twelve pesticidcs were detected 600 times and violated 22 times from the agricultural products. The highest frequency of detection was procymidone and that of violation was endosulfan. The highest rates of detection divided violation times as diazinon. In agricultural products, 466 samples had pesticide residues and 22 samples violated the maximum residue limits (MRLs). Agricultural products were also classified by type and red pepper powder belonged to the others was the highest detection rate at 70.7%, fruiting vegetables 35.3%, tea leaves 23.6%, stalk and stem vegetables 21.2%, fruits 14.6% and leafy vegetables 11.2%. The rates of violation sample were stalk and stem vegetables 1.1%, leafy vegetables 1.0% and roots and tubers 0.4%. Leek was to be managed primarily because it had the high detection and violation ratio and was detected together several pesticides.

Characteristics of electrical conductivity(EC) of seventy one-greenhouse soil located in southern part of Korea were surveyed to obtain the basic information for sustainable management of plastic film house soils. The averaged soil EC were 5.84 and 2.49dS/m for top-and sub-soil, respectively, showing distribution of 11.3% for top-soils and 50.7% for sub-soils within the optimum level of 2.0 dS/m. On the whole, the soils with flowering plants revealed higher EC than those with fruiting vegetables showing 2.75~6.34dS/m for the former and 2.29(sub-soils)~5.13dS/m(top-soils) for the latter. In a view of soil sampling time, the soils at Feb., 1996 marked 4.3~37.7% and 10.3(top-soils)~11.3%(sub-soils) higher EC compared with the soils at Sept. and Dec., 1995, respectively. The linear regression correlation coefficients of soil minerals to EC were in oder of $Mg^{2+}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $SO_4{^{2-}}$ > $K^+$ for top-soils and were $Cl^-$ > $SO_4{^{2-}}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $K^+$ for sub-soils. In especial, the concentration of soil EC accompanied the increasing population ratio of soil fungi to bacteria and/or actinomycetes.

During the growth of fruit vegetables such as pepper, cucumber and tomato, there are light deficiency under the plant canopy. This study was conducted to clarify the effect of light diffusion film on the stem growth, canopy, flowering and fruiting of green pepper in greenhouse. The transmittance of total solar radiation into greenhouse under woven and double films were 90% and 75% of polyethylene film. And the transmittance of photosynthetically active radiation into greenhouse under woven and double films were 96% and 81% of polyethylene film. However, the light diffusions under woven, double and polyethylene films were 46%, 31% and 9%, respectively. The plant height under polyethylene film covered greenhouse was 96.9% cm, taller than those under woven and double films by 6.5, 13.9 cm. And the third node length under woven film covered greenhouse was 8.6 cm, shorter than those under double and polyethylene films by 2.5, 5.7 cm. Also the first branch angle under woven film covered greenhouse was 61.0$^{\circ}$, larger than those under double and polyethylene films by 2.3, 10.3$^{\circ}$. But there was no clear difference in the node numbers among the covering materials. The rate of curved and sterile fruit under woven film covered greenhouse was smaller than those under double and polyethylene films by 4.6, 5.5% and 1.2, 3.6%. But the contents of vitamin C showed no difference among the covering materials and plant densities.
