  • The low temperature distribution of the refrigerated and frozen food has been increased gradually. Refrigeration industry is using R134a refrigerant, which GWP is 1300. R1234yf is an alternative refrigerant of R134a because GWP of R1234yf refrigerant is just 4. Evaporator used in refrigeration truck refrigeration system is operated on low temperature condition. Accordingly, evaporator is formed frost and the formation of frost is rapidly decreased performance of evaporator. In this study, the performance of evaporator using R134a and R1234yf refrigerant was analyzed with operating conditions under frost condition. As a result, the performance of R134a evaporator according to air inlet temperature, relative humidity and evaporating temperature was more sensitive than R1234yf evaporator. Besides, the frost growth of R134a evaporator is steeper than that of R1234yf one.

  • The cryosuction (negative pore pressure) in freezing soils causes groundwater migration from the frozen fringe to freezing front for ice lens formation. Frost heave and heaving pressure by ice lens cause damage to ground infrastructure. In order to prevent damage by the frost heave, various frost susceptibility criteria have been proposed. The SP (Segregation Potential) is the most widely used classification criterion for frost susceptibility in cold regions. The expansion of the ice lens by the migration of the groundwater is a key role in frost heave mechanism, and thus it is necessary to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity. In this paper, soil mixtures of coarse-fines (sand-silt) were prepared in various weight fractions and used for frost heave and column permeability test. For each case, the SP and the hydraulic conductivity were derived and correlations were analyzed. As a results, the transition threshold of the SP and the hydraulic conductivity were shown at 20% and 50% of the silt weight fraction, respectively. Although there are difference between these transition thresholds, these two coefficients show a specific correlation. In the future, additional study should be conducted for detailed analysis of the threshold transition values between SP and hydraulic conductivity.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the frosting behaviors of thermally conductive plastic(PBT based resin) resin by comparing with those of aluminum and some plastic(PTFE based resin) test specimens. It is found that the frosting behavior of plastic specimens with 1 mm thickness show similar trend with aluminum except PTFE. The properties of frost formed on the specimens are affected by both thermal conductivityand surface characteristics (hydrophilic/hydrophobic) of the materials. It can be said that the heat and mass transfer rate of plastic materials are almost equivalent with those of aluminum.

  • When the ground temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$, wet soils expand due to the ice formation in their porous space. This results in frost heave which causes structural stability problems. Frost heave is attributed by several factors such as physical soil properties and heat transfer including pore water phase change. Due to the complex physical phenomena, reliable and verified multi-dimensional numerical models for frost heave problems are still in a research stage. This study presents an efficient and simple method of overcoming numerical problems associated with sudden jump of heat capacity due to the phase change from water to ice in the pore space. This paper proposes heat transfer equation and finite element method when the saturated soils or porous rocks are subjected to freezing. Numerical analyses using the proposed method agree well with the known closed form solution and the laboratory test results.

  • The present study was investigates the effect of the parameters on the frost formation and heat transfer performance such as fin shape, air temperature and air velocity. Heat transfer rate and pressure drop by frost were experimentally investigated. Effect of the wet blub temperature and air velocity on the heat transfer performance has been also investigated. The heat transfer performance of the louver fin and tube type heat exchanger was higher by maximum of 0.85% than the corrugate fin type at the air temperature of $2.0/1.5^{\circ}C$. As the wet blub temperature of air were increased, the heat transfer rate, pressure drop and mass of frost of three test models were increased. Especially, the maximum heat transfer rate and maximum pressure drop were shown for the Type B louver fin heat exchanger. As an experimental result, the enhancement factor(EF) of louver fin and tube type heat exchanger was only $0.2{\sim}0.4$ due to the high pressure drop.

  • Bare-topped thufur is called as frost scars, implying the rupturing stage of vegetated mounds, Field observations and measurements provide empirical information on the process and factors of thufur disintegration in Mt. Halla, Initial bare patches on mound apexes are scaled up by continuous removal of soil and vegetation, resulting in the formation of crater-like thufur, Frost action plays a primary role in thufur disintegration, In particular, pipkrake loosens soil particles within the bare patches and subsequently accelerates the degradation of vegetated mounds during periods with frequent diurnal freeze-thaw cycle and high soil moisture, Deflation also has an impact on thufur breakup in that the bare patches usually lack upper dark brown soil and are covered with granules, Withered shrubs such as Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii are frequently observed in frost scars and disrupted mounds, indicating that thufur disintegration has been probably influenced by global warming.

  • In this research, it is to find a method that frost does not form on the outdoor unit to develop a heat pump capable of heating in cold regions. For this reason, we produced an incubator capable of creating an environment of -25℃, and constructed an experimental apparatus so that experiments in the room were possible. However, it is necessary to grasp the characteristics of the air reaching the front of the heat pump outdoor unit installed in the experimental apparatus, and flow analysis was performed using ANSYS CFX, which is general-purpose software. As a result, the flow velocity of the air reaching the front of the outdoor unit in the outdoor unit chamber in the entire region of the simulation conditions (5.0 to 7.5 m/s) has many differences in the upper and lower portions, resulting in a natural state. It turned out that the condition can not be satisfied. Therefore, it is determined that it is necessary to additionally install a frequency divider at the front of the outdoor unit to make the flow velocity constant.

  • During the whole month of December in 2005, Korea experienced both heavy snowfall and freezing temperature in southeast regions, which had caused frost related damages to many pavements laid on top of box culverts. In-situ observation revealed that the formation of ice lenses in subgrade and subsequent unbound layers led to upward heaving and transverse cracks in concrete and asphalt pavements. This has affected the long-term performance of pavements, as well as has threatened drivers' safety for a while. Recently, Korea Expressway Corporation has proposed a design guide to better protect newly constructed unbound pavement layers over culverts from frost heave. A trench drainage system has been selected to effectively draw off water and to alleviate pore-water pressure in soils during the coldest season. This paper presents experimental and analytical backgrounds behind this new design guide. Soil specimens retrieved from the sites are tested to quantify clay content and to estimate the permeability of subgrade. A 2-D ground seepage analysis has been conducted to better understand the changes in pore water pressures as a function of grain size. Finally, an optimum size of trench drainage is determined based on numerical analysis and workability in the field.

  • This study is on a experiment which shows to defrost automatically on the optimum time regardless of defrosting method. The result shows that the more defrost layers increase in fin tubes of evaporation, the less the section of the circulating air reduce. Thickness of the frost formation increases, so a pressure difference of ventilation increase, as a result automatic defrosting system sets the time COP drops suddenly up optimum time. Automatical defrosting system can find out the initial related current of evaporator fan motor and the value of load current in the optimum time. And it sets defrosting time, evaporating temperature, and temperature in refrigerator up system requiring value. Consequence of this experiment is that energy consumption with defrost load gets effect of reduction of eleven percent per 25.4 hours compared with common defrosting.

  • Fundamental experiments with single row heat exchanger were conducted for the purpose of validating new defrosting method using jet impingement. The coolant temperature were varied from 83 to 250 K. We used the jet periodically, once in 50 second and the duration of the jet is 0.1 second. The effect of the coolant temperature in the effectiveness of the jet defrosting was investigated.
