  • The purpose of this study is to provide the priority of the front-loading factors in the design stage of the automotive parts development process in order to efficiently and effectively respond to the demands of the car maker (customer). Front-loading is defined as a strategy in order to improve development performance by shifting the identification and solving of design problems to earlier phases of a product development process. Two approaches of the front-loading are project-to-project knowledge transfer and rapid problem solving. For the study, a survey was conducted on the R&D department in the automobile parts company and analyzed by AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. The result of the survey shows the cost savings is the highest weight in terms of front-loading effect and in terms of front-loading factors, it gives priorities as "the problems of past project" first, "Design Review" second, "CAE (Computer Aided Engineering)" third, "FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)" fourth, "benchmarking" and SR (Sourcing of Requirements). The results of the study will be helpful to provide practical value for improving product design of component development.

  • Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is applied for solving Combined Economic Emission Dispatch (CEED) problem with valve-point loading of thermal generators. This CEED problem with valve-point loading is a nonlinear, constrained multi-objective optimization problem, with power balance and generator capacity constraints. The valve-point loading introduce ripples in the input-output characteristics of generating units and make the CEED problem as a nonsmooth optimization problem. To validate its effectiveness of NSGA-II, two benchmark test systems, IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems are considered. To compare the Pareto-front obtained using NSGA-II, reference Pareto-front is generated using multiple runs of Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) with weighted sum of objectives. Comparison with other optimization techniques showed the superiority of the NSGA-II approach and confirmed its potential for solving the CEED problem. Numerical results show that NSGA-II algorithm can provide Pareto-front in a single run with good diversity and convergence. An approach based on Technique for Ordering Preferences by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is applied on non-dominated solutions obtained to determine Best Compromise Solution (BCS).

  • In offshore engineering, lateral cyclic loading may induce excessive lateral movement and bending strain in pile foundations. Previous studies mainly focused on deformation mechanisms of single piles due to lateral cyclic loading. In this paper, centrifuge model tests were conducted to investigate the response of a $2{\times}2$ pile group due to lateral cyclic loading in clay. After applying each loading-unloading cycle, the pile group cannot move back to its original location. It implies that residual movement and bending strain are induced in the pile group. This is because cyclic loading induces plastic deformation in the soil surrounding the piles. As the cyclic load increases from 62.5 to 375 kN, the ratio of the residual to the maximum pile head movements varies from 0.30 to 0.84. Moreover, the ratio of the residual to the maximum bending strains induced in the piles is in a range of 0.23 to 0.82. The bending strain induced in the front pile is up to 3.2 times as large as that in the rear pile. Thus, much more protection measures should be applied to the front piles to ensure the serviceability and safety of pile foundations.

  • Recently, regulations on automobile exhaust gas emission are being strengthened. Accordingly, automobile exhaust gas emissions are expected to decrease and continue to decrease. On the other hand, many countries do not yet consider the emission of non-exhaust air pollutants from automobiles as important. Automobile non-exhaust substances are classified into three categories: tire dust emissions, brake wear emissions, and road scattering dust. In particular, in the case of tire dust, research results exist that pollutant emissions increase as the weight of a vehicle increases. Since the weight of trucks varies according to the load and the load along the axles is also different, it can be expected that the emission of PM10 from the tire dust will be different depending on the loading method. Therefore, this study was conducted on the amount of PM10 generated in tire dust considering the axle load of the truck according to the loading method. However, it was confirmed that the total amount of PM10 was less than that all loads are loaded in the front or rear when the load was evenly distributed in the front and rear of the cargo compartment. In particular, if the load is distributed evenly in the front and back of the cargo compartment and the load in the front part is divided into 2 to 6 and loaded, as the number of divided loading increases the amount of PM10 generated decreases. And when the load is divided into 6 pieces, the total amount of PM10 generated is 0.3952g, the minimum value. If the load is divided into 6 or more and loaded evenly, the total PM10 generated continuously increases and converges to about 0.3964g.

  • This paper discusses applicability of the enhanced reference stress method to estimate J-integral along the semi-elliptical surface crack front. It is found that angular variations of normalized Jintegral are strongly dependent on the geometry, loading mode and loading magnitude. As application of the reference stress approach to semi-elliptical surface cracks implies proportional increases in the normalized J-integral, the present results pose a question in applicability of the reference stress approach. However, investigation of the error in the estimated J-integral in the present work suggests that the enhanced reference stress approach, recently proposed by authors, provides an effective engineering tool fur estimating crack driving force along the semi-elliptical surface crack front.

  • This paper presents an extensive analysis of unsteady wind loading data on a 18 m long and 2 m high wall in a rural environment, with the wind at a range of angles to the wall normal. The data is firstly analyzed using standard statistical techniques (moments of probability distributions, auto- and cross-correlations, auto- and cross-spectra etc.). The analysis is taken further using a variety of less conventional methods - conditional sampling, proper orthogonal decomposition and wavelet analysis. It is shown that, even though the geometry is simple, the nature of the unsteady flow is surprisingly complex. The fluctuating pressures on the front face of the wall are to a great extent caused by the turbulent fluctuations in the upstream flow, and reflect the oncoming flow structures. The results further suggest that there are distinct structures in the oncoming flow with a variety of scales, and that the second order quasi-steady approach can predict the pressure fluctuations quite well. The fluctuating pressures on the rear face are also influenced by the fluctuations in the oncoming turbulence, but also by unsteady fluctuations due to wake unsteadiness. These fluctuations have a greater temporal and spatial coherence than on the front face and the quasi-steady method over-predicts the extent of these fluctuations. Finally the results are used to check some assumptions made in the current UK wind loading code of practice.

  • This paper discusses the application of evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms namely Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and Modified NSGA-II (MNSGA-II) for solving the Combined Economic Emission Dispatch (CEED) problem with valve-point loading. The valve-point loading introduce ripples in the input-output characteristics of generating units and make the CEED problem as a non-smooth optimization problem. IEEE 57-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems are taken to validate its effectiveness of NSGA-II and MNSGA-II. To compare the Pareto-front obtained using NSGA-II and MNSGA-II, reference Pareto-front is generated using multiple runs of Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) with weighted sum of objectives. Furthermore, three different performance metrics such as convergence, diversity and Inverted Generational Distance (IGD) are calculated for evaluating the closeness of obtained Pareto-fronts. Numerical results reveal that MNSGA-II algorithm performs better than NSGA-II algorithm to solve the CEED problem effectively.

  • One of the most useful method for increasing combustion loading of premixed flame is to strengthen the turbulent intensity of unburned mixture. It produces an important information to a design of efficient combustion equipment that analysing microstructure of strong turbulence premixed flame. The flame structure and characteristics are depend on the turbulence of unburned mixture. Therefore, to strengthen the turbulent intensity of unburned mixture make flame scale small and accomplish efficient combustion. We measured the velocity of local flame front movements, local eddy radius and local reaction zone thickness quantitatively with increasing turbulent intensity of unburned mixture. We researched the microstructure of flame using ion currents that react sensitively in the reaction zone. Consequently, the velocity of local flame front movements is depend on the velocity of unburned mixture and local eddy scale is to be small with increasing turbulent intensity. But there is no change in local reaction zone thickness with turbulence.

  • A pulsed impinging jet is used to simulate the gust front of a thunderstorm downburst. This work concentrates on investigating the peak transient loading conditions on a 30 mm cubic model submerged in the simulated downburst flow. The outflow induced pressures are recorded and compared to those from boundary layer and steady wall jet flow. Given that peak winds associated with downburst events are often located in the transient frontal region, the importance of using a non-stationary modelling technique for assessing peak downburst wind loads is highlighted with comparisons.
