In this paper, linear ultrasonic actuators are designed using two dimensional motions of a PMW-PT piezoelectric plate. By equalizing the natural frequencies of longitudinal and transverse vibration modes in the cantilever structure, the ultrasonic motion of the combined vibration modes are generated. We have designed two different PMN-PT actuators: one uses a tip attached on the edge of the actuator and it drives the object in the perpendicular direction of the tip. In other model, the actuator plate moves itself through stationary guides. Prototypes of the two models are manufactured and experiments results are compared to the theoretical and numerical results. The effects of structural characteristics and the friction force existing between the actuator tip and the moving object are considered. Experiments show the possibility of small size ultrasonic linear motors which can be applicable to small form factor information storage and phone camera actuators.
Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor). Furthermore, the budgets of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on the turbulent structures.
In this paper the leakage prediction and rotordynamic analysis of an annular seal with a smooth rotor and circumferentially grooved stator are performed based on a three-controlvolume theory. The present analysis is validated by comparing with the experimental data of Iwatsubo and Sheng and theoretical results suggested by Marquette and Childs. For the leakage prediction the present analysis shows a good agreement with Marquette and Childs' result and a qualitation agreement with Iwatsubo and Shengs' experimental data. Direct and cross-coupled stiffness coefficients show closer agreement with the experimental values than those of Marquette and Childs. However, direct damping coefficient shows greater discrepancy from the experimental value than Marquette and Childs'.
Most machine element, such as gears and bearings, are operated in the mixed lubrication region. Contact between two asperities has an effect on machine life by increasing local pressure. To estimate fatigue life exactly, asperity contact should be considered as a factor of fatigue life because this happening produce friction, abrasion and make flash temperature. In this paper, asperity contact is considered as a result of film breakdown when lubricant pressure is not enough to separate two asperities. Contact pressure is calculated to asperity overlap region and added to lubricant pressure. For this model, numerical procedure is introduced and the result on surface roughness and velocity for wheel bearing is presented. Results of EHL analysis for wheel bearing show that asperity contact is occurred at the edge ofEHL conjunction where has a insufficient lubricant pressure to separate two surface.

Observations related to the along-wind dispersion of puffs were collected from 12 field sites and from a wind tunnel experiment and used to test simple similarity relations. Because most of the date made use of concentration time series observation from fixed monitors, the basic observation was t, the standard deviation of the concentration time series. This data also allowed the travel time, t, from the source to the receptor to be estimated, from which the puff advective speed ue, could be determined. The along-wind dispersion coefficient, x, was then assumed to equal tue. The data, which extended over four orders of magnitude, supported the similarity relations t=0.1 t and x=1.8 $u^*$t, where t is the travel time and $u^*$ is the friction velocity. About 50% of the observations were within a factor of two of the predictions based on the similarity relations.
This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of staggered dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The RBNN method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter (d/D), channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio (H/D), and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio (D/S) are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) is used to determine the training points as a mean of the design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.
This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of stepped circular pin-fins to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The KRG method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport turbulent model. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss related terms with a weighting factor. Ten training points are obtained by Latin Hypercube Sampling for two design variables. Optimum shape has been successfully obtained with the increased objective function.
The commutation errors by the filtering process in the large eddy simulation are considered. It is compared the conventional filter with the inhomogeneous filter that is devised to reduce the commutation errors. The weighting factor of the inhomogeneous filter suggested by Vasilyev is adopted. Also, using the optimizing function that estimates test filter width to eliminate the dissipations in the region excluding the vicinity of the wall, the flow patterns are analyzed. It is evaluated in simulations of the turbulent channel flow at Reynolds number of 1020, based on friction velocity and channel half height. Results show that the commutation errors can be significantly reduced by using the inhomogeneous filter and the optimized test filter width.

The stability of an embankment Impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment. To evaluate the accurate safety factor of an embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change (drawdown) of reservoir level Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient Ⅰ. If a piezometer is inserted into a body of embankment, the level to which free water rises is a measure of the energy at that point. From model test result, it is possible to calculate safety factors of earth embankment. To assure the validity of this research, tests were conducted with numerical experimental models. And the experiment models were constructed with slopes of 1:1.0, 1:1.5, 1:2.0, 1:2.5. Analysis of experimental results, seepage force was analyzed according to downstream time, internal friction angle and cohesion, respectively.
